Windows Service Pack 4 ~ Problems with the Registry

I want to inform Windows 2000 users about problems which Service Pack 4 can

cause. I can state from personal experience that installing Service Pack 4

can screw up some of your previously-installed Software. After installing

SP4, my FaxTalk Modem Software didn't work properly, and using the Windows

procedure to "Remove" and re-install it, didn't solve the problem. The

Windows Remove procedure didn't remove the FaxTalk's contents in the

Registry. Thankfully, the FaxTalk Website provided information to manually

remove it from the Registry, and after doing that it re-installed correctly.

So, if you should have some new problem with a Software Application after

installing SP4, you need to manually remove (including from the Registry) and

re-install the Software. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

SP4 was released June of 2003 so we should have been through any issues long

ago. I suspect there were other lurking issues.

The specific problem I suffered with FaxTalk after installling SP4 (two

years ago) was that it was no longer able to activate the FaxTalk Viewer for

looking at Fax files. Only after removing the FaxTalk components in the

Registry and re-installing it was the problem solved. Personally, I don't

think it's wise for Software programmes to use the Windows Registry. They

should just use their own data File which would prevent such problems. I

still use a 15 year old version of MS Works for Windows which uses its own

data File in the 'winnt' Directory.
