RE: Vista SP1

Patrick,

If SP1 doesn't show up in Windows Update, it means that there may be still

driver issues between your PC and the pack.

If you can't wait go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=874A414B-32B2-41CC-BD8B-D71EDA5EC07C&displaylang=en

to download the whole 5-language pack SP1, or use the following direct

download link:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/3/b/83b8c814-b000-44a4-b667-8c1f58727b8b/Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0.exe

Re: Vista SP1

If you are not being offered SP1, see this

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343/en-us

There is a reason not to offer SP1 and if you bypass the checks and install

anyway, there seems to be a much greater chance of a failed install and in

some instances it doesn't seem to be backing out properly, leaving various

serious problems.

Re: Vista SP1

Patrick,

You may try to do the homework by yourself and speed up SP1 installation

date on your PC.

Go here:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Here-Are-the-Drivers-that-Don-039-t-Play-Well-with-Vista-SP1-RTM-81152.shtml

to check which are the offending drivers (names and versions) that prevent

SP1 from showing up in Windows Update.

You will surely find at least one that is installed in your PC.

Update that driver to a newer version (go to your motherboard mfgr web site,

or whatever may apply) and wait for SP1 to show up after a while ("a while" =

a couple of hours).

I did that on a PC with ALC850 audio chipset.

Went to Realtek website and downloaded latest driverst.

After the installation, SP1 showed up gracefully in Windows Update after a

while.

Take Carlos's advice about going to the website. I deleted an offending

Creative driver 1242, and WU installed 1241, also a problem since all <1242

are a problem.

Re: Vista SP1

John,

On another Vista PC, the "offending" driver was coming from an SBLive 24bit.

As I knew that it was the only issue I would have and that the worst that

could happen would be to reinstall the driver, I downloaded the whole SP1

package and forced its install.

Everything went fine.

The only thing I had to do later on was to restore the speaker configuration

(from 7.1 to 5.1) and re-enable the bass redirection and bass boost (no

reboot required).

I have also seen recommendations of completely removing the drivers, so that

the device cannot be "seen" by the OS, thus provoking SP1 to show up in WU.

Later on the device can be installed safely.

It seems that the real issue with those drivers is that Vista doesn't

re-enable them properly when SP1 install ends.

Re: Vista SP1

John,

There is a trick for having better drivers than the official SB ones.

Check the Vista forums at the http://www.soundblaster.com site.

There's a brazilian guy under the nickname of Daniel_k that has successfully

modded drivers for the whole line of cards, both for x86 and x64 OS's.

My lowly SBLive 24bit is working in Vista x64, emulating by soft a high-end

X-Fi Card.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/sp1.mspx

Apparently its not going to be released on Windows Update until mid-April.

(Thanks Steve from Microsoft for this info :)

You can download the 5-language, 450Mb installer from Microsoft's downloads

website though if you want it now.

As for why it appeared originally, its been widely reported in the press

Microsoft accidentally activated it for the x64 version about 2 weeks before

the release on March 18. This was subsequently rectified.

It was there Sunday when I updated my sister-in-law's
