Are there any Vista 64 compatible print servers? I need a print server that

will give my printer (Kodak 5500) full function (copy scan fax) wirelessly.

Any one using one in Vista Ultimate?Details please.

Unless designed for that, an AIO doesn't scan well on a network. The Kodak does not have a network connection, from what I can see.

I have a D-Link DPR1260 (http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DPR%2D1260) that supports scanning for some models connected by USB. That's independent of the operating system from which you do the scanning, I think, and is limited in what it can do.

I also have a HP PSC 7280 with built-in wired/wireless networking. The client for it is a pig but works in Vista Ultimate x64. The hardware is pretty good. Since you already have a printer, that wouldn't be your best choice. As I said, I'm not totally satisfied with the client software because it doesn't work as well as it should. I'd call that an annoyance rather than a rejection of the hardware, but installation was a pain.

Re: Print server for Vista 64 Ultimate

The print part is easy - just about anything should work, assuming you have

printer drivers for your printer. And here again, let me repeat what I've

said rather more than once. Buy printers that are not "host based printing"

or some other equivalent phrase that means you are dependent on the PC to do

the work. If your printer has PCL or PostScript support, then you don't care

what OS you have, you'll be able to print. If your printer doesn't have its

own engine, but depends on your PC to do all the work, then you will always

be dependent on your OEM to provide software for the specific OS you have.

And as we've seen time and time again, they don't always come through.

The same mantra holds for "all in one" printers - the requirements for

printing are very, very different than those for scanning. And there is a

very high likelihood that you won't have OS independence with the scanning

portion. You will NEED to have a driver running on the PC, and full support

from your OEM. Further, most inexpensive scanners know nothing about tcp/ip,

they expect to be communicating via USB or SCSI or even (shudder) a parallel

port. So expecting them to work at the end of a wireless network is just not

in the cards. You can likely get the printing to work - the methods and

functionality for tcp/ip printing has been around for years and years and

years and is completely OS independent - LPR/LPD, or the newer Windows tcpip

printer options. In either case, it's easy to connect a printer to a

wireless print server and get it to work. But there is no equivalent for

scanners.

Re: Print server for Vista 64 Ultimate

Hi Charlie

My wife can print through the linksys router. But cannot use the other

features of the printer.

She has a laptop with Vista 32 installed

I found a printer server(SX-2000WG) SX-2000WG

that's wireless & also supports the AIO Kodak

printer.

http://www.silexamerica.com/sx-2000wg.html

This print server(SX-2000WG) has an installation cd that supports XP. I

doubt it will run in Vista 64.

The Kodak printer is connected to my desktop via usb cable. I have a duel

boot system(XP-32 XP-64 Vista-64.)The Kodak printer software & drivers

support all of these operating systems.

My question is if I load the print server software in XP32 & use a thumb

drive to transfer setup to Vista 64(if this is possible),will my wife's

laptop be able to use (see) the SX-2000WG when I am in Vista 64? Will she

then have full functions. This is what I am trying to determine. Most of my

time is spent in Vista 64.

BTW, where did you find information that it supports

your Kodak 5500 AIO ???

SX Virtual Link (2008-FEB-01)

http://www.silexamerica.com/sx-virtual-link-2.html

SX Virtual Link is the utility to connect USB devices.

Target Model: SX-1000U, SX-2000U2, SX-2000WG, StitchLink

This software is operated in Windows 2000, Windows XP,

*** Windows Vista (32/64-bit), ***

Mac OS X (Ver 10.2.7 - 10.5).

Intel Mac is now supported. MAC Leopard is now supported

Windows Vista is now supported

Maybe it can help you - here is interesting 64-bit compatible

technology: USB over Ethernet/Network/LAN:

(1) http://www.usb-over-ethernet.com/productoverview.html (KernelPro)

(2) http://www.usb-over-network.com/ (FabulaTech)

(3) http://www.eltima.com/products/usb-over-ethernet/ (Eltima)

(4) http://www.incentivespro.com/ (INCENTIVES Pro)

(5) http://www.silexamerica.com/usb-ip-windows-sdk.html (Silex)

BTW, using this sw you can use USB devices in virtual machines ...

I'd be interested to know what functions it actually supports.

The D-Link I referred to has scanning functionality built into it. I don't know if it supports the Kodak, but it's OS independent. I think it uses TWAIN, which is probably more simplistic than supported by the manufacturer's driver, in a supported OS.

Hi Roman!

I found the original link on Kodak site. I also talked to tech support at

Silex.

The SX-2000WG USB 2.0 high-speed (up to 480Mbps) device server is the best

and most cost-effective way to connect USB printers and other USB devices to

a wireless network because of capabilities such as:

a.. Virtual Link software for compatibility with almost any Inkjet/MFP/AIO

USB printer

b.. Transparent operation with your Windows and MacOS X applications

c.. Supports most USB devices, including streaming audio and video

(isochronous) devices

d.. Can connect up to 14 additional USB devices (scanners, network

storage, etc.) to the network

Re: Print server for Vista 64 Ultimate

Hi Chris

Thanks for your input. The SX Virtual Link loads in Vista 64 fine.As soon as

I purchase silex server & test I will post if my wife has full support in

Vista 32. There tech support is very good

Here is what there tech support(TIM) wrote:

The win32 is actually operating on a separate computer then there will be no

issues no matter what OS Hugh is using. I would recommend that Hugh install

SX virtual Link on the win32 system. Next he needs to attach the Silex

device to his wireless router with a network cable. Now the Silex device

must be power cycled. Next, open SX-Virtual Link and see if you can see the

print server. If you can right click on the device and select "View web

page" from the drop down list. Click on the "Network Settings" link at the

left of the screen and enter the username "root" when prompted. Please be

aware that there is no password. Make the necessary changes to the network

and wireless settings. Remove the Ethernet cable from the back of the Silex

device. Power cycle the Silex device to switch from wired mode to wireless

mode. At this point if the wireless settings are correct the user should

see two solid green lights. If the bottom light is blinking it means that

the device is not authenticating to the network and that the wireless

security settings are incorrect in the Silex device. The final step is to

set the printer options in SX-Virtual Link as explained in the device

addendum.

Hope this helps.
