64 Bit Server 2003 Questions

We have some machines we are going to run Virtual Server 2005 R2 on that

have more that 4GB of memory so we want to upgrade to use Server 2003

Enterprise 64 bit and have a few questions:

- Does the 64 bit version use more memory that the 32 bit version?

- Will 32 bit software still run successfully on the 64 bit system?

- Will code we have written with the 32 bit version of the .NET framework

run without modifications on a 64 bit Server?

- For machines that I am going to run the 64 bit version of SQL Server 2005

I know I want them to be 64 bit Server 2003 but on boxes that I am running

Active Directory, DNS, SharePoint, Exchange, etc. should I also install the

64 bit operating system even if I do not think they are going to need more

than 4GB of memory?

Thank you.

Re: 64 Bit Server 2003 Questions

1.) No, not materially.

2.) Yes, with the usual exceptions, well and thoroughly documented

3.) So far as I know, .NET will work, but it's conceivable that you might

have to recompile. I'm not a developer, nor is this a developer NG, so you'd

do better asking that question over on a suitable .NET forum.

4.) Exchange 2k3 will NOT run on 64bit Windows Server, and Exchange 2k7 will

not run on 32-bit Windows. So choose accordingly. As for the rest? Should

not be an issue. AD, DHCP, etc, are completely indpendent of bitness.
