Won't Upgrade!

Hey Everyone,

 

Need some Assistance! I have just purchased the HP m9250F, which comes

pre-loaded with Vist HP 64-Bit. I have purchased the Vista Ultimate Upgrade

Retail Version.. I have completed ALL updates available for Vista HP. When

I tried to Upgrade HP to Ultimate, it would NOT allow me to Upgrade, only to

Clean (Not sure if thats the name) install, Upgrade disabled. It suggested

that I use a more up to date version and than retry the Upgrade.

 

Not positive if those are the exact words, but 90% correct. What doesn't

make sense is that ALL of the updates have been completed and none are

pending.

 

So, whats up and how do I fix it? Really don;t want to do a Clean Install,

only because I don't know what will or won't work if it done.

I would wonder about SP1. If you current installation has

been updated to SP1 and the DVD is the RTM (no Service Pack)

then this may be the problem.

 

If you have SP1, you should be able to remove it and then

try the upgrade. Or, you would need a DVD with SP1.

Theo,

 

Neither of your options are valid in my case. The PC came preloaded with HP

SP1 already loaded. So there is not download upgrade to delete, since SP1

was not acquired in that fashion.

He cannot remove an integrated SP1. There is a big difference between an OS

that has been upgraded to a new service pack level and an OS that already is

at that service pack level. SP1 cannot be uninstalled from an integrated

image.

That article only applies to SP1 that is an upgrade to Vista rtm. It does

not work with an integrated Vista SP1.

You need to obtain a new dvd from MS or the retailer where you purchased the

package. There is no other method since you cannot slipstream Vista like

you could with XP. You can order one dvd from

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx using

your upgrade product key for shipping and handling cost. The dvds available

there are integrated dvds by this time. I would see if the retailer will do

the exchange first, however.

I have spent 4-5 hours today trying to fix something which could not be

fixed! Than you come in and bingo bango, problem resolved and even included

a link to boot...

He didn't say it was an integrated installation. He stated

he had done all the updates, so I was under the impression

he had gotten to the SP1 level via Win Update. Had I known

it was an integrated installation I would not have suggest

eh try to uninstall SP1.

He said that Vista SP1 came preinstalled. That can only mean that the

manufacturer installed the integrated version (build 6001). A manufacturer

never installs an rtm image and then applies the upgrade. A mfg just

installs the current image from MS.

Would you be so kind as to point out where he said SP1 was

preloaded? Apparently I am blind in one eye and can't see

out of the other, because I just don't see it!

Need some Assistance! I have just purchased the HP m9250F,

which comes

pre-loaded with Vist HP 64-Bit. I have purchased the Vista

Ultimate Upgrade

Retail Version.. I have completed ALL updates available for

Vista HP. When

I tried to Upgrade HP to Ultimate, it would NOT allow me to

Upgrade, only to

Clean (Not sure if thats the name) install, Upgrade

disabled. It suggested

that I use a more up to date version and than retry the

Upgrade.

 

Not positive if those are the exact words, but 90% correct.

What doesn't

make sense is that ALL of the updates have been completed

and none are

pending.

 

So, whats up and how do I fix it? Really don;t want to do a

Clean Install,

only because I don't know what will or won't work if it done.

Okay. But he didn't say when he bought the computer and how

am I know to what's on his computer? My crystal ball is

down for maintenance at the moment.

 

Besides, you stated he said it came with SP1 and the post

that I read does not say that. All I can go by is what I

read, nothing else!

Nevertheless the only time the upgrade option is unavailable is when the

version on the dvd is older than the one on the hdd. Unlike the repair

install option in XP which requires the versions to agree, with Vista the

only requirement for an upgrade-in-place is that the version on the dvd be

the same or later than the one on the hdd. Hence, from his description it

is clear that he got a bum deal from the retailer (a Vista rtm copy).

Otherwise the upgrade would have been enabled. Had the version on the hdd

been Vista rtm the upgrade-in-place would have worked no matter what the

retail copy was. Elementary, my dear Watson. :P
