I have W2KPro w/o ANY SP's. When I try to install SP4, it tells me that my

ATAPI.SYS file is in use by another program and that I need to shut down the

other program before SP4 can fully install. HELP!!!!

While service packs are supposed to be cumulative, IIRC, installing

SP4 may require the atapi.sys file (or some other) from SP2. Do a

search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base or Google for more information.

Or alternately, if it is still possible, do the upgrade to SP4 (and

later) via Windows Update.

Microsoft's Knowledge Base indicates that SP3 is cumulative and contains

SP1 and SP2. SP4 is not cumulative, so you must install at least SP3.

Also, Microsoft released a Windows Installer Package (Update.mis) for

installing the W2K SPs. See 269732 in the Knowledge Base. This is aimed

primarily at IT support staffs, but it can be used (with some

difficulty) by individuals. SP1,2,3,4, and SP4 Rollup are available as

self-extracting complete installation files. See references from same KB

article. wajh

Hello jim,

Sorry but that's not correct. Any SP from MS can be installed with out the

predecessor.
