I think you should be asking if its best to upgrade (?) to any of

the Vista flavors. I have had an association with Vista Ultimate

since it's release. The 64 bit system install was a real nightmare

until I finally did the unthinkable and got it to install. It

operates slightly slower than XP on my approved systems. The system

with the 32 bit OS is noticably slower that the 64 bit OS system.

The 64 bit system has consistently been slow in file transfers and

other functions. Also MS updates are looked upon with dread. Each

of the larger updates have resulted in totally unexpected problems.

SP1 was no exception. The systems is now more buggy than ever

before. There aren't as many problems with the 32 bit system. But

there are problems.

My system with XP still installed is running quite smothly. SP3

installation has caused no noticable problems. It's operation is

much crisper and faster than either Vista flavor. It is just a much

more enjoyable system to use.

If you have no real need for the 64 bit OS I would stay away from

it. If you want to play with A 64 bit OS, then try one of the Linux

distros.

I understand that MS will cease support of XP in the near future.

However, I am having a hard time with MS support of Vista and am not

sure that the software is supportable. I am also unsure that MS can

make the Vista software more efficient, more user supportable and

more user friendly either.

Basically, I and quite a few others have found Vista to be a dud.

MS reports of 100,000,000 licenses being sold makes one wonder. I

believe they reported that there were 90,000,000 licenses sold last

summer. An increase of 10,000,000 in the rest of the time makes one

wonder too. Carefully evaluate your needs before you jump on the

Vista bandwagon. I hate to say it; but, MS appears to be attempting

to force users into the flawed Vista product. They have already

stampeded the OEM market into line. Sure wish Apple would release

an OS that would operate on MS systems.

The latest OS X works on Intel systems, only those supplied by Apple

though. MSFT has a s/w monopoly and Apple a h/w monopoly.

MS will retire XP in April 2014 if that is what you mean by "cease

support... in the near future." Six years does not strike me as the near

future in the computing world.

Give Kubuntu 8.04 a try. I dual boot and it is much faster than Vista.

Vista 64 is slow even on the best available hardware. ( 4Gb Ram, Intel Duo).
