Windows XP Pro 64Bit lifetime?

Sorry if this has been dealt with before but - what is the Microsoft

"lifetime" for Windows XP Pro 64Bit edition?

 

IOW - how much longer will critical and non-critical updates be available

for this OS?

 

It is desired to keep this OS on a laptop and a desktop as long as possible

because it works so admirably well!

XP Pro x64 (at whatever the final service pack level turns out to be) will

recieve two years mainstream support following having been superceded by

Vista Business x64 (which happened in the first quarter of 2007).

Therefore, mainstream support will end in the first quarter of 2009.

Mainstream support means critical and non-critical updates, including new

functionalities. Extended support will last for five years after the end of

mainstream support, or through the first quarter of 2014. New critical

updates will be available during extended support.

As I remember, MS will support the OS with updates until 2014 - much more

concerning is probably that your device manufacturers will direct their

64bit driver development towards the Vista variety only!

 

My Win2K installation was officially 'killed off' early this year,

thankfully, I'm still recieving stuff from MS occasionally.

Also note that XP64 is based on Server 2003, and as such will be on

track with any updates for that OS. Seeing as Server 2003 isn't going

anywhere anytime soon, I doubt you'll see the end of XP64 support (at

least in security updates) for a long time.
