Guest Robbie Hatley Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I'm running Windows 2000 and using a 2-buttons-&-wheel USB optical mouse. I'm noticing that in every program I've tried so far, the wheel causes text to scroll vertically in 3-line increments. I'd really prefer 1-line increments. Is there any way to change this globally, in Windows 2000 settings? Or is this a thing which is controlled by each individual program? (If the latter, I'm annoyed, because I have yet to see a program that offers user control over this.) -- Curious, Robbie Hatley lonewolf aatt well dott com www dott well dott com slant user slant lonewolf slant

But here are no controls in Mouse Properties for the wheel. There's button configuration, single/double click to open, double-click speed, pointer selection, pointer movement speed, acceleration, etc... but nothing for the scroll wheel. That's why I was wondering if there's some setting somewhere else in Windows 2000 for mouse scroll wheel increment. ("Scroll Increment: 1|2|3|4|5 lines" or something like that.) (Seems to make sense that such a control, if existent, would be on the "Mouse Properties" panel, yes... but I've learned that quite often, controls in Win2K aren't where I expect them to be.) -- Cheers, Robbie Hatley lonewolf aatt well dott com www dott well dott com slant user slant lonewolf slant

Maybe you should see if newer drivers are available for your mouse. Otherwise you can try via the registry at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WheelScrollLines John

It's a Microsoft mouse, and didn't come w. any drivers, because my Microsoft operating system is supposed to already have them. Nor do I intend to spend the next 93 hours of my life wading through the enormous microsoft.com website looking for drivers which probably don't exists anyway (except as a builtin part of Windows 2000). > Otherwise you can try via the registry at: > > HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WheelScrollLines Ah-HA!!! Note what I said in my last post about "settings not where I expect them". I certainly would never have thought to look in HKCU/Control Panel/Desktop. How counter-intuitive! This has nothing to do with the desktop! Let's see if that setting exists.... Yes, and it's set to "3"... which explains why my wheel advances text 3 lines instead of 1. :-) Lets try setting that to 1.... No change. Ok, let's try restarting windows.... I'm saving this as a draft... Restarting... YES! Text now scrolls 1 line in all programs, instead of 3. Excellent! It took about 30 seconds to find from a Yahoo! search. Drivers are avalable for W95 onwards: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/Download.mspx > Thanks for the tip! You're welcome.
