Guest flamejob Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Microsoft's Help and Support website states that some 16-bit applications may install and set-up successfully on some Windows 2000 equipped computers, but not on others. I followed the instructions re: clearing the "hidden" attributes on both "autoexec" and "config.sys", which is supposed to allow the changes necessary to load these applications, but I am still having problems. The pop-up message I receive reads: "16-bit Windows subsystem" - "c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt" - The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft applications. Choose 'close' to terminate this application." The software manufacturer has tried to help but they don't seem to have any idea why I'm having this problem with my computer. I'm running Windows 2000 Professional (SP4) on an older AMD 750 AT based system, but they say that this shouldn't be a problem. Can anyone PLEASE help me? THANKS!

You can dowload it freely from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

I do not know about using config.sys but have made a change to c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt device=%SystemRoot%\system32\ansi.sys which has worked starting at SP1 now through the rollup
