Trouble installing 16-bit ms-dos applications in Windows 2000 Pro

Microsoft's Help and Support website states that some 16-bit applications may

install and set-up successfully on some Windows 2000 equipped computers, but

not on others. I followed the instructions re: clearing the "hidden"

attributes on both "autoexec" and "config.sys", which is supposed to allow

the changes necessary to load these applications, but I am still having

problems. The pop-up message I receive reads: "16-bit Windows subsystem" -

"c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt" - The system file is not suitable for running

MS-DOS and Microsoft applications. Choose 'close' to terminate this

application."

The software manufacturer has tried to help but they don't seem to have any

idea why I'm having this problem with my computer. I'm running Windows 2000

Professional (SP4) on an older AMD 750 AT based system, but they say that

this shouldn't be a problem. Can anyone PLEASE help me? THANKS!

I have solved similar problems by installing Virtual PC, then running

the DOS application under this process. You can dowload it freely

from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

I do not know about using config.sys but have made a change to

c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt

device=%SystemRoot%\system32\ansi.sys

which has worked starting at SP1 now through the rollup

Possible that autoexec.nt does not exist in that folder

if not...copy it over from your repair folder.

If that was not the case, you may modify autoexec.nt

as specified for autoexec.bat
