Install isses with selected programs

I've used my Ultime 64 bit Vista for a year now. While mostly fine, there

are (related I think) issues when trying to install some programs. Example.

I have Adobe Web CS3 suite. The Acrobat Pro product refuses to be

reconginzed that it is installed. Each and every time I run it, it goes

through a full install routine then opens OK. Like wise when I boot my

system, the same installer comes up and runs through its paces. Where is

the entry to or what entry is missing. I have similar problesm with NY Times

reader, and MS PRoject 2003 and others. Addtionally the install for

Silverlight does take and each time I go to the Microsoft site I get the

message" do you want to install Silverlight..."

So I know that some 32 bit app done't install correctly, but Microsofts???

Is this problem a common one or is my system just screwed up.

One of the common problems with installs that don't play well with Vista is

that they get the check for privilege wrong (it works differently on Vista

because of UAC) and the install backs off and becomes a per-user install

instead of a per-machine install. You can recognise if this has hqappened

by logging on as a different user and seeing if it still shows up in

Add/Remove Program's equivalent (Programs and Features is it?) . The dialog

you're seeing is a repair dialog (there'll be MsiInstaller event log entries

too) because something appears to be missing. This can be due to registry

entries that couldn't be created because of the lack of privilege, hence

continual repair. The reboot probably has one of those Run entries in the

registry associated with Acrobat that triggers the repair.

It's one of those cases where lots of installs just haven't been updated to

play well with Vista and UAC, and adding 64-bit into the mix probably

doesn't help either.

I have the same suite, and all of it installs onto my Vista Home Premium 64

bit, except for Acrobat Pro 8 - everything seems to proceed, but at the end

of the installation I get a list of all the component programmes, and next

to Acrobat it says "failed to install correctly", or words to that effect.

I've tried a standalone version of Acrobat Pro 8, and with that I get a

message ""Error 1304 - error writing to file ...........". Adobe's own

knowledgebase has fixes for XP, but I don't know if I can use the same

instructions in Vista and don't want to risk trying in case it screws

anything up.

For the moment I've reverted to version 7 which installs fine. I see version

9 is out soon, so maybe I'll look at that.
