Display randomly turns on and off

Since I installed Windows XP Pro 64 bit, I seemingly randomly encounter a

problem with the screen display. The computer will be functioning fine and

then the screen will go black (the monitor is still on) for approximately a

single second and then come back on. It does not happen every time I use the

computer, but when it does occur, the only solution I have found is

restarting the machine (sometimes I have to do this multiple times).

I am quite sure the problem lies with Windows or with the drive Windows is

installed on as I have Fedora 8 installed on another drive in the system, and

it does not encounter this problem.

Is anyone aware of a fix for this problem or perhaps a special

driver/configuration mode I should acquire? Has anyone else experienced this

problem?

RE: Display randomly turns on and off

I remember this happening to a computer I used. I had reinstalled the

motherboard and I had put a metal motherboard mount in a hole where the mount

touched the motherboard and was shorting the motherboard.

A small amount of resin on the bottom of the motherboard melted but I am

using the motherboard today.

The monitor would do exactly as you describe and yes it would sometimes go

better if I restarted the computer. Eventually it got worse but nothing was

permanently damaged.

Actually, I remember now the power supply began to shoot sparks out the

backuntil it would not work! That was scary!
