Installing Ad- Aware 2008 in Vista 64?

Hey gang,

 

I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

I have SpyBot Search and Destroy I have been using .

Thought I might add Ad Aware Free version, as I used it back when I was

running XP, and noticed the Ad Aware 2008 free version says it will run in

Vista 32 or 64 bit.

 

However, when trying to install, it gets through to the " performing

software update" notice, and shows time remaining 0 seconds.

There is considerable hard drive activity during this for about 3 minutes,

then the hard drive activity stops, and it remains on this screen. I have

left it here for about 5 minutes afterwards, and it just does nothing.

I try to exit setup, get the message to press ok to exit setup, but again

nothing happens. I have to close setup in task manager, get some kind of

access violation error message, then it closes.

I don't see any folders for Lavasoft installed, so don't know if it has left

junk in my registry or not.

 

Things I have tried:

Running setup as administrator

Tried installing for all users, and for me as the user only.

 

Just curious if any of you have run across this before and might have any

other ideas?

haven't tried it, yet, but I'd suggest:

 

1.) try the install on a fresh boot, with no other applications running,

including any AV.

2.) try the install in compatibility mode

3.) make sure there's no hidden dialog - I've seen installs in vista have

problems getting a key dialog up where you can see it.

An update:

 

Prior to seeing your message, after I had let it sit awhile with no

progress, I minimized the install screen, and there behind it was an access

violation error message. ( you are right about having hidden error

messages).

I clicked on ok on the error message, then the program seemed to finish

installing.

 

I started Ad Aware, then went to update the definitions. Got another access

violation message, and it closed Ad Aware's update manager, but the

definitions seemed to download and install.

 

I then performed my first " smart" system scan, it ran ok ( although took a

while, about 14 minutes ), and I deleted the tracking cookies, then

rebooted, as I got a message that I needed to reboot to finish removing a

couple of files.

 

After reboot, started Ad Aware as administrator, it started ok. I went to

update again, it said definitions were up to date, but that there was a

software update I needed. When I clicked to get that update, again, got an

access error violation message, clicked ok, and it closed the update

manager, and did not get the software update.

 

I am concerned about these access violation error messages, think it might

be worth trying to uninstall, and then install with no av and in

compatibility mode?

Another update:

 

I think I may have gotten it to work properly now.

 

I went in, and set the executable for the program, to run in compatibility

mode for XP SP2.

 

I then launched the program normally, went to check for updates, again got

the message there was a software update, and again when trying got the

access violation error message and it closed update manager.

 

So I tried once more, after setting the program to run in compatibility mode

for XP SP2, but this time selected to run as administrator ( did not work

prior to setting the program to work in compatibility mode),

This time, when I went to update the software, did not get the access

violation error message, and it updated the software fine.

 

Whew, that was tricky, hopefully all is well now...

 

Thanks again for your help Charlie, you gave me the idea of trying

compatibility mode.
