Removing Previous Versions of Java

I was just looking through the A/R list on Win98SE computer, noticing

that I have a rather large list of Java Runtime Environment installs

all the way from Java 2 v1.4.1_02 until Java 6 Update 4 (13 in

total). Can I delete everything prior to Java 6 Update 4 or shall I

retain Java 5.0 Update 14 along with Java 6 Update 4 as well. Thanks.

Re: Removing Previous Versions of Java

Uninstall them ALL, check to see if there is a Java folder in C:\Program

Files, and if so delete it, then go to Java.com and get the latest for 98/ME

which is 5.0 Update 15. Or, since your system seems to have no problems with

v6, get the latest version 6 Update 6.

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Every time you update Java, first remove any existing Java installations.

Thanks Gary. Works great. I went with 5.0 Update 15, then went to the

verification process on the Java site which confirms that 5.0 Update

15 is the correct version, that everything was working properly. While

first trying 6.0 Update 6, I got the warning that this version was

incompatible, might not function properly, so as a "non-techie", I

went the safe route. Thanks again, sure frees up a lot of "C" drive

space.

Re: Removing Previous Versions of Java

Yeah, they are still patching v5 (Update 15 is a very recent one), and until

they stop doing that, it's the one I'd choose for 9x systems.

Gary, a new glitch on using Java 1.5.1 update 15, solo. Upon opening

Writer in Oxygen Office Professional 2.4.0, an error window came up

saying that this version of Java was defective and to use another

version. As you might recall, amongst the 13 JRE installs on my

computer was Java 6 update 4. So I uninstalled 1.5.1 update 15, then

re-installed Java 6 update 4, the error window went away. To verify,

when Writer came up, I went to "Tools, Options, Open Office.org, Java,

which then lists Java 6 update 4 as the only JRE install, with a check

mark next to it, confirming that it was the correct version for Oxygen

Office Professional 2.4.0. I went the further step of installing Java

6 updates 5, 6 as well, but Writer only put a check mark next to Java

6 update 4 again as the correct version, so I uninstalled Java 6

updates 5, 6, leaning Java 6 update 4 as the only Java install on my

computer, guess that's the right one. For this non-techie it seems to

work. Thanks, Ken.

Re: Removing Previous Versions of Java

Not familiar with the Open Office app, but I bet if you ONLY installed

Update 6 and uninstalled the rest, your app will choose it just fine. I'd

certainly want to test. But you MUST only have one installed at a time. (And

always check Program Files\Java folder to make sure that only one folder

exists, the one for the installed Update. If other folders still exist there

after uninstalling from Add/Remove Programs, delete those folders.

These updates are nearly always intended to fix a vulnerability. If you

can't use the latest update(s), then you really need to use your firewall to

block Java from running in your browser. Use it only for your local apps.

You are right Gary. The app chose Java 6 update 4. But when 1.5.1

update 15 was the only Java install on my computer, the app won't

choose it. So I guess Java 6 update is the correct one for this app.

All is well again. Thanks.

No, all is NOT well if you're using version 6 Update 4. You should uninstall

Update 4 and install Update 6. I'm betting your application will work just

fine with the latest Update.

I tried that Gary but the app won't put a checkmark next to it, only

Java 6 update 4. By the way that app is the fuller version of Open

Office 2.4.0, the free office program similar to Microsoft Office.

Re: Removing Previous Versions of Java

When you described trying it, you didn't say that you removed JRE6 Update 4.

Sounded to me like you just added updates 5 and 6 without removing any of

the others (4 and or 5). If ONLY update 6 is installed, what happens? What

gets checked?

Gary. With 6 update 6 only, I get the error window again, no checkmark

in Tools, Options, Open Office.org, Java. When I revert back to 6

update 4 only, no error window, the checkmark automatically appears

again. It wants update 4, I am just going to go with that. Thanks

again for all your help, Ken.

Re: Removing Previous Versions of Java

Ken,

Java just released new versions, both for version 6 (update 7) and for

version 5 (update 16). You might want to try them out, especially v.5 update

16. It's really a good idea to keep up to the latest updates.
