Guest Ant Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 W2K SP4's Task Scheduler won't start because of "System error 1083has occurred." Hello. I am having a problem with an old Dell Optiplex desktop that is using old Windows 2000 SP4 (all critical updates). I noticed event logs say it has problems starting Windows' Task Scheduler service. I can't turn it on manually through GUI and command line. Here is what I saw in cmd.exe: C:\>net start These Windows 2000 services are started: Alerter ASF Agent Automatic Updates COM+ Event System Computer Browser DefWatch DHCP Client Distributed Link Tracking Client DNS Client Event Log Iap Intel® NMS Internet Connection Sharing IPSEC Policy Agent Logical Disk Manager Machine Debug Manager Messenger Network Connections Norton AntiVirus Client Plug and Play Print Spooler Protected Storage Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Remote Access Connection Manager Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Remote Registry Service Removable Storage RunAs Service Security Accounts Manager Server Still Image Service System Event Notification TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service Telephony Windows Management Instrumentation Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions WMDM PMSP Service Workstation The command completed successfully. C:\>net start "task scheduler" System error 1083 has occurred. The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thank you in advance. :) -- "Maybe it's like an ant hive..." "Bees man, bees have hives." "You know what I mean. It's like one female that runs the whole show." "Yes, the queen." "Yeah the mamma. You previously reported that the machine had been the subject of various malware attacks, and that you subsequently cleaned up the damage. It is a common misconception that all damage done by viruses and malware can be removed. This is incorrect. If the cleaning program knows exactly what alteration was performed in which file or registry key then a full recovery is possible. If not then some subtle damage may remain. It's the same with the human body - ever seen the face of a person previously afflicted with smallpox? To me an infected machine is a compromised machine - I would immediately replace its OS with a clean image (which I always create shortly after the initial installation). If I was in your position then I would do this, in the following order: - Type these two terms into a Google search box and check the first 20 or 30 hits: "The executable program that this service is configured to run" Scheduler - Follow Dave Patricks advice and perform a repair installation. - Re-install Windows from scratch.
