SFTP Solution
by Guest Starbuck- 1 reply

I want to setup an SFTP Server on an existing Server 2003 machine. I'm wondering what solutions most people out there are using, or if you have any recommendations. I just went through the process of installing the OpenSSH solution by Michael Johnson only to get to page 2 of the readme file to learn that "Server 2003 is not currently supported". The WSFTP product is a bit pricey at $450 plus another $200 for support. That's do-able, but before I drop $650 on the product I would like to know if anyone out there would actually recommends it. I also came across the list of products at the wikipedia site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SFTP_servers but…

USB Mass storage device shows up in device man but not in disk man
by Guest majestik- 5 replies

Ok, I have a USB Mass storage device that I connect via a powered hub to my laptop. It has worked in the past, but for some reason, it recognizes it as a Mass Storage device, then a popup says found new disk drive. I go into Device Manager, and there it is. It is recognized correctly and working fine. When I then go into Disk management I do not see it. I have a c partition on my laptop hard drive, and also an e. I do not see any other drives. Why is my USB drive not assigning a drive letter to it, and why is it no showing in disk management? I have another JUST like it, and it works just fine, plug and "pray" works and assigns it a drive letter. Any i…

Let me just say that I love Windows XP, but the trouble I am having is... About 6 months ago my youngest son down loaded a virus, and I tried to clean the registry files myself but I guess I deleted some files that I shouldn't have. Anyway my computer is giving me a bunch of error messages when I am trying to perform a new install of Windows XP Professional. The error messages are "NTLDR missing" Please press ctl+alt+del to restart your computer. Well I fixed that problem now when I use the 6 different boot disks that I had downloaded. It works this was after I had fixed the NTLDR missing Problem, now the error message that I am getting after I reformat my …

CI files growing and reducing C drive disk space
by Guest lmhaggblom@besafeandfree.org- 0 replies

On Monday, 09/29/08, my Windows Server 2003 system told me I was low on system resources, and when I checked, I only had 700 MB of 12 GB left of free disk space when I should of had 2.27 GB free space. The problem was the "CIfiles" folder, which held a 500 MB .ci file. The number in the file name was also on three other files, but they were small. The windows.edb file was 1GB. So, we stopped the Windows Search service, deleted all four "CIfiles" folder files with the filename of the 500 MB, and emptied the recycle bin. Then, the windows.edb file shrunk and the disk space increased back to 2.27 GB free space. We restarted the Windows Search service, and this…

Remote Desktop Error with Shell Version 6.0.6001
by Guest jms88- 9 replies

When I try to connect to an NT4.0 Server, Terminal Server Edition with the latest Remote Desktop Client, I get: "Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again." However, I can connect to said server from a machine running Shell version 6.0, build 6000, Control version 6.0.6000, and below. This connection problem seems to be related to the latest version of RDC. If there a workaround, or a fix so I can connect to this legacy terminal server? I have tried the "Themes" fix to no avail. I also cannot downgrade the RDC on the XP SP3, or Vista SP1 machines, as Windows prevents me from doing…

Selection of graphic software for picture display

I want to know how to set up my Win2K so that a particular graphic software is selected to display a picture file (e.g. -.jpg) by clicking it in Win Explorer. Presently the bulky Photoshop is automatically selected and loaded after long wait before the picture is shown. If I can somehow change the setup so that Paint is selected, for instance, waiting time should be a lot shorter.

Using windows search kills my taskbar!
by Guest WanderingElf- 8 replies

Hello. My PC has recently developed a problem (Recent as in the last couple of months or so). When I use the windows searc (for all files and folders), my taskbar freezes. Usually I have my bar on autohide, but when I select to search it freezes in 'up' position. Nothing on it is clickable. The search window also never opens. Alt/Tab no longer works. I can still work in whatever window is on top (if it's full size), or click between smaller windows (like instant message programs), but nothing involving the task bar. The only way I can shut down or make the bar work again is to use ctrl-alt-del and restart through the task manager. There's…

BAT file to re-start in Safe Mode...? 1 2
by Guest Kenneth- 31 replies

Howdy, I have a simple batch file that dumps 4000 contacts from my database to a TXT file, and then imports them to my Contacts. Recently, that last phase has been producing some errors indicating a problem with the command line text that does the import. This happens intermittently. The folks who support the importing software (Contact Genie) tell me that the command line text is fine (as I would assume because it usually works properly), and they believe that something is corrupting the command line text preventing their software from correctly interpreting it... I have experimented with the simple work-around of running the BAT file in Safe Mode wi…

Hello everybody. One day I deleted the show desktop icon in the quick launch area by mistake. I wanted to add this button again to its original place but I could not. I could create a shortcut of it on the desktop and drag it to quick launch next to the Start button but although it seemed the same old button it opens the desktop as a seperate folder and did not show me the desktop. The only thing I want is to minimize all the open files and see my desktop with this button. I tried to open and close the show quick launch command from the preferences of task bar but it loaded the other programs i.e explorer button but not show desktop. Can anybody help me t…

OS blown out @ logon
by Guest nosirrah- 7 replies

Installation of an update of a highly reputable anti-spyware programme has blown out my XP (SP3) at the logon stage with the rtlGina2.dll fault, (otherwise well documented). In addition startup in safe mode hangs at mup.sys and recovery console won't take my password. I have available the two possible 'fixes' but apparently no suitable access to run them so they repair the original OS. I have also: Vista on HDD1; and a (temporary, I hope) parallel XP installation on HDD0. Have I ANY simpler option tham creating a Bart PE disc (or the total reinstallation of apps, etc on the parallel XP or the Vista), please, anyone?? I fear this will be a two-letter a…

I am having a trouble with users home folders and offline folders. The issue is like this: when making a folder offline (either through group policy og by right clicking and selecting make available offline) I get the following error: "Offline Files (\\server\share): Unable to make 'share' available offline on \\server\users\username. Access is denied." The structure on the server looks like this: - users : shared folder, domain users full control (share permission) - username : subfolders with the name of the user. created automatically when the user is created in AD. According to an article I found, it is a permissions issue with the top-folder "use…

I don't see any stratum setting there. Thanks.

Repairing XP for HP devices
by Guest Vernon CThomas- 3 replies

I have worked with HP to uncover a problem with all of my HP devices ( they got flaky and HP techs made the problem worse and worse until they won't install at all ). I have been advised to re-install Windows XP but 1) my Dell-supplied reinstall disc has no key info; 2) I am on SP2 with countless security updates since original; etc., etc. My only problem is with the HP-related files and drivers. Is there some method to do a repair without regressing? It would take days upon days to get this system back if I uninstall and attempt to reinstall from scratch.

I have two monitors: one is a 4:3 on a desktop and the other a 16:9 laptop monitor. I want to use a .JPG file from a 4" x 6" digital camera photo as the desktop background on the laptop. But when I set it up by right clicking on the desktop, selecting properties, and browsing to the appropriate .jpg photo file, the resulting image is stretched out, distorting the photo in a manner similar to what appears on sports bar HDTV sets. I assume there's a way to retain the correct aspect ratio, leaving a pair of "black" bars at the left and right ends of the photo. How to do it? -- PT

The drwtsn32.exe file is the one that opens when a program generates an error and you get a message saying "something.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows." If I set a program to stop this one from closing other processes, will it mess up the operating system, or is it safe to do? Thanks, JM
