Now that I've replaced my laptop, I'd like to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall XP in view of possibly selling it off. The problem is that the CD player is inop. Whats the best way to wipe the hard drive and install a fresh copy of XP? I do have a USB drive large enough for the OEM version of XP.

LDAP and surfing
by Guest ki4zji- 8 replies

Here's the problem... One of our installations is having what appears to be intermittent problems with internet surfing download speeds. We have replaced the DSL modem and thoroughly tested all the associated LAN hardware. The DSL provider has now responded saying: "I have taken a further look and it seems that your server (LAN IP: 192.168.0.2) seems to be using something called "LDAP" which tries to verify certain information before allowing your PC to bring up that webpage. This LDAP in your server is not recognizing certain pages correctly. I would suggest the following:" The address x.x.x.2 is, in fact, our windows 2003 server, however I fail to see h…

I have just changes PC unit, and I am trying to find my old settings, as I could not transfer them from the old one. One setting that I used to rely heavily on is the online translation, synonym, thesaurus, dictionary etc. I used to click or highlight one word in my text (in word), to find a synonym in the same language, or a definition, or a translation of this word into another language, French mostly. The usual window used to appear on the right of the text, with many suggestion. The version I have now is very poor and hardly suggest anything... God knows how I managed to install this first place, but it appeared one day, and I haven't got a clue how…

free disk capacity?
by Guest bgnedi- 7 replies

Dear all, I am using XP professional, It starts to slow down. When I right click on C: properties I find: used space 21GB, free space 6GB and capacity 27GB; and I see the pie chart is almost full of blue against purple. Few months ago it wasn't like that and I haven't installed any new programs since then, also I do not feel that my few programs will take all of this amount of GBs. I tried D.Cleanup, defragmentation, and deleting temporary files by using: Start Run (dllcache, recent, prefetch, temp, %temp% and files in internet properties) and also reduced System Restore settings. I checked C:Windows and found tens (10s) of files start with $NtUninstal…

Hi, I have added an external eSATA drive to my server which I wanted to install vista onto. The idea was I could shut down w2003 server, plug in the external eSATA drive, change the BIOS to put this external drive as the first boot drive, and boot up vista. I would also be able to remove this drive, boot up and go back into W2003 server. So I setup the bios as above, with the eSATA drive plugged in, booted up installed Vista onto the external drive, and it works fine. Problem is that now there is a problem with the W2003 server. It boots with 'service failed to start.......) message, and goes to the login screen, but when I log in to the server it …

Hi, On the MSTSC client TS gateway tab you now have the option "bypass TS gateway server for local addresses" My question is, what does the client concider to be local? when does it decide yes i need to use the TS gateway or no i don't i can directly connect? 1) does it look at the local NIC subnet 2) does it look at AD sites and services 3) does it do some sort of connection test 4).... what determins the local yes or no answer? As a second question i see you can select auto detection for TS gateway, but how does this work? 1) does it broadcast for a TS gateway 2) does it query AD for TS gateway servers 3) does it look at specific DNS recor…

Cap locks and multiple selection of lines in Excell
by Guest David- 4 replies
In Office 2007, in Excell, I occasionally have the program throw a fit and begin to select 2 or 3 lines or cells. I also notice at the same time, the cap lock key is reversed. When it is locked, I type in lowercase and when it is unlocked, I type in uppercase. I haven't figured out what I did to cause it or how to reverse it. I usually save the document, close the program and re-open or reboot. Other times in just seems to go away after a little while. Any clues as to what is happening? -- The more you know the less you know until the day comes you know nothing.
