Personal nfo tracking files
by Guest Gian Luca- 0 replies

Recently I was visiting what I thought was a respectable web site and suddenly I started getting pop up IM-type messages of a sexual nature. They were in the form of contact invitations and all of them said they were from my zip code. If I visit an electronics vendor's site, it already knows my zip for computing the best price available on an item. After a visit to a cooking blog, I immediately received an invitation via E-mail from the name I recognized as that of the blog's author suggesting I visit their MySpace page. I don't use any app whose purpose is to store personal information for easy retrieval in an effort to avoid the very situations I am now expe…

by Guest MacWin- 0 replies

iMac 4 Gb RAM Windows XP Pro SP3 running under Parallels I have a FAT32 external HD on the virtual side of an iMAC This drive is accessible from both the Mac and Windows side. All was well until two days ago when one single folder failed to open, producing an error message: [path] is not accessible. The handle is invalid. The folder continued to open without hesitation on the Mac side. I copied the folder to an off-drive location, deleted the original and recopied the folder back to its original location. Same problem. Then, from the Windows side, I renamed the folder by putting a space between each letter of the folder's name. The problem was resolved and…

I see RDC uses UDP and port 3389. Initially I thought I just needed to forward TCP port 3389 from the router to the computer. So do I need to forward UDP port 3389 as well? Is there other ports that need to be forwarded as well? I've used RDC over a LAN ok but haven't been able to over the internet where the host computer is conencted via an ethernet router. Thanks, J.

I would like to customize the images used on my desktop shortcuts. Right click-properties-change icons only lets me change it to an "icon file type" How can I use a JPG image for a desktop shortcut? Do I have to somehow convert the JPG to an icon file type? Also, in case it matters, the shortcuts I want to change are mainly shortcuts to web sites. Thanks -- David Schwartz Commack, NY

XP, AMD and SP3
by Guest jaydee2- 2 replies

I have a friend who installed SP3 on his AMD processor computer and has been plagued with lockups and general discontent—until he removed SP3. I have been recently assailed by MS / windows update with a pending SP3 update. Since I am on a computer with an AMD 751 MB and K7 processor, I've been loathe to allow the SP3 upload. Do I have to worry about this? Was it a problem peculiar to my friend's computer? What's so hot about SP3 that I need to download it? tks, johnd -- jaydee2

REGIONAL & LANGUAGE SETTINGS NOT ALLOWING

I don't understand why but the Regional & Language Settings on the Control Panel are unfortunately not being customized to allow me to enter the short date format of d/M/yyyy and/or change currency symbol to Rs. for Pakistan. Everytime I make a change a message box displays that: "One or more characters that you typed in this field are invalid. Try typing different characters." Such a message pops-up even if I don't insert the formats manually but select ones from drop down box. Shall appreciate all your expertise and guidance/help! -- Best Regards, FARAZ A. QURESHI

Desktop Experience cannot install fail
by Guest George Valkov- 0 replies

I cannot install the Windows Desktop Experience on Windows 2008 server trial. This is a clean install. I tried updating windows, all updates installed successfully, except for two which gave this error: 0x80070057 ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER The parameter is incorrect. I was able to install the two remaining updates on the second attempt. Then I tried installing Windows Desktop Experience again, it says OK restart needed, after the restart, before the logon screen it says Stage 3 ... counts to 100% and restarts, then it indicates checking the registry for errors and restarts again. Then before the logon screen it says: Windows updates failed, reve…

I would like to retreive offline files from a drive, the drive is from another laptop, which decided to die on me. I have attached the drive to another laptop and would like to retreive the files from the CSC folder on that drive. Is it possible to restore these files to normal file system files without actually using this drive as the boot drive. Please help. -- RS_WMT

New Hardware Found
by Guest Keith- 4 replies

Every time I start my PC, I get the New Hardware found message saying that it has found a Printer (no details, just Printer), I only have one printer which is shown in the Hardware list and is working fine, but to try and eliminate things. I have actually removed EVERYTHING from all connectors except LAN, mouse and keyboard but it still pops up with the 'Found New Printer'. I have not added anything new to my PC for a long time. I am running windows XP with SP3, but this started a couple of weeks ago when I still had SP2. I have a full Internet Security package through Virgin Media so don't believe it to be virus related. Any suggestions? Thanks …

Termional server vs. Regular shell
by Guest Xmozart- 0 replies
After restarting a PC with windows XP sp3 (or sp2 as well) I login into it from another PC with remote desktop client. I get a Terminal Server shell instead of the regular one. When I click on Start button I see the "Windows Terminal Server" on the left blue bar. This behavior causes several problems for applications (msde setup failed for example). The only workaround I found is to login into the PC locally first and then to connect to it remotely. In such case I get the correct shell. Is there any resolution for the problem? Thanks.

Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard and 28 -- XP SP2 Clients
by Guest Krisk- 6 replies

We have Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard with 5 Client License. We also have 28 clients all running on XP SP2 laptops. The server has "dhcp server" and "file server" setup. On the server a folder is shared and the laptops map to that folder. The client computers are used for students so there could be multiple users per computer. There seems to be a problem when more then 5 computers are connected to the server. Do I need to have a license for each computer on the server for this and why? If I used a XP computer for a file server it would work. I thought the 5 client license was for SQL or other server type software. Any info would be great. Tha…

I use Firefox mostly but sometimes IE if needed. I've told both of these to save passwords. A short time ago no IDs and passwords were saved for any site, even those that always recalled them. The settings are still "save passwords." Does anybody have any idea why this is happening. I think this happened when I installed XP SP3. Thanks in advance, Alan

1 TB Drive Copying Problem
by Guest Tom- 3 replies
XP Pro SP3 Just installed a Western Digital 1 TB Drive, removed the FAT 32 partition with Disk Mgt and installed a new partition formatted to NTFS. When I try to copy files from my older External USB 2.0 drive to this new External 2.0 drive, the copying function stops after a short while and the computer hangs without finishing the copy operation. I have to reset the computer. Are they are issues with copying large files or multiple files in XP? Are there any large drive issues with XP? Some if my drive image files are 30 GB in size.
