How to init or reset USB port via software?
by Guest VanguardLH- 6 replies

I have a USB device that doesn't initialize (become available) on Windows startup but will init when I unplug and replug the device (and into the same USB port). So it will work but with the hassle that I have to unplug & replug it after a Windows restart. Since the unplug and replug of the device triggers its init and detection, I'm wondering if there is a utility that will do the same so I can activate the USB device via software? This would need a command line interface so I could have it run as a scheduled event and only for that USB port (i.e., I or the utility would have to find the enumeration for it under HKLM so that vendor ID device in that USB …

Microsoft Office Documents

So my computer came with XP-Pro installed, and trial versions of Office 2007. I installed Office 2003 myself, and when I first installed it, I seem to remember all of my .doc, .xls, .ppt, and so forth files opening with Office 2003 programs. At some point though, I may have opened a file with the 2007 version of one of the programs, and now my .xls and .ppt files open with the 2007 version of Excel/Powerpoint, respectively. I've tried changing the file associations, and I've also tried using the context menu option "Open With..." and used the browse option to search for the .exe file of the Office 2003 version, but my .xls files still opened with Excel…

Re: Comcast, MS Outlook settings??? Ritter197, These are instructions for Outlook 2K3, but they should be similar for you. Open Outlook> TOOLS> Email accts> Change and View Accts> Select your Comcast acct> Change button> More Settings button: 1. Outgoing Server tab: a. Make sure you select "My Outgoing Mail Server requires authenitication" I personally use the "Logon On Using" boxes, because I use a Spam filtering Program. b. And manually put your Comcast UserID and password there. You might need to use your primary UserID & password that was given to you by Comcast. 2. On the Advance tab: a. Leave Incoming Mail Ser…

Hi, I'm running Windows XP Home Edition. When I turn on the computer, the monitor screen is pixelated and hard to read. The machine boots up, I get the Windows logo, and then a black screen. Nothing is wrong with the monitor (hooked it up to another computer). Any ideas?

System Restore problems
by Guest Theslaz- 1 reply

Whilst turning of system restore in order to delete the restore files; I noticed several things. On the drives that it shows that it is monitoring; my "C" drive is not listed. It lists my "N" drive as the system drive. I installed a new 500 Gig drive about a year ago. I made this new drive "C" and renamed my old C drive "N". At least I thought I did! What I did was; I cloned the new drive to be identical to the old C drive and then swapped them around in my drive bay. Obviously I did something wrong or not complete. The computer is working great. Any ideas/suggestions? The second thing I noticed; is that even thought system restore is on; it is not cr…

Trying to install the 64bit MySQL ODBC driver on an XP64 Pro machine, I managed to toast my ODBC drivers. I've tried running MDAC 2.8, but it just sort of locks up. Is there any way short of reinstalling XP to get those drivers back? I can't seem to find the 64-bit version of MDAC out there. -- Aaron Clausen mightymartianca@gmail.com

Removing Programs
by Guest kgkphd- 3 replies

I have been getting blue screen errors and have been following the recommended pattern for isolating them. One of the steps is to remove extaneous programs. Well,I seem to have icons on my desktop that I don't remember putting there. When I go into Control Panel - Add/Delete programs, these programs are not listed. If I right-click on the icon and hit delete, it tells me that only the icon will be deleted and that I have to go to Add/Delete in the Control Panel to zap the program. Catch 22. How do I get at these things? Thanks

I have Googled, but not found (probably my fault) how to restore missing registry keys. I have just used 'Codec Tweak tool' in K-Lite Codec Pack to help solve a problem and it reports some missing Registry Keys. Somewhere along the way K-Lite install reported (amongst similar others) 'DirectShow filter was detected as broken' Name Subtitle Mixer Filename Unknown CLSID {00A95963-3BE5-48C0-3356D67EA09D} Reg key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{083863F1-70DE-11D0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\instance\{00A95963-3BE5-48C0-AD9F-3356D67AE09D} Reason Missing required registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00A95963-3BE5-48C0-AD9F-3356D67AE09D} Remove this…

by Guest Brad Pears- 3 replies

We have a win2K3 windows terminal server where we allow our dealers to connect to run various applications. Most of them have had no difficulties printing since I made mods to the server to configure a "Fallback Printer" driver when the proper driver is not available on the term server. (driver for the printer they actually have installed locally) However, today one of them called me complaining they were unable to print. They have an all-in-one printer with a USB connection. The printer is an HP Deskjet F2100 series printer. WHen this user logs on, I am wathcing teh event viewer and I am seeing that it does set up the PCL Fallback Printer driver - and this is …

Hi, I have an odd issue on our DC's. We have approx 30 DC's and I have non domain admins who are grated access to remote desktop into DC's via the remote desktop group in Active Directory (Builtin container). The members of the group are able to access 2/3 of the DC's but on the other 1/3 they receive the prompt stating they must be granted the logon through Terminal Services right. The remote desktop group exists by default on the TS connection. In addition the remote desktop group is specified in the Default Domain Controller policy for the logon through Terminal Services right. Replication is not an issue, group memberships have been fully replic…

Hi all, I was unable to log on my Dell Laptop Windows XP home after it automatically updated to Widnows XP SP3. The error message: A Problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license... ---------- I had to remove the Windows XP SP 3 and now it worked perfectly. So the problem lies in the stupid SP3. But after I remove SP3 and went on to Windows Update website and wanted to manually update some security patches, it didn't allow me to do so. It wanted to force installation of SP3 on me. The Windows Update webpage stuck at that very dialog. Given that Windows tends to automatically do the update, how do I prevent the SP3 being i…

? About SP 3
by Guest Bassman- 1 reply

I received the SP3 download thru auto updates and believe (think) I installed it ok beacuse in my system info it shows, XP Pro Ver. 5.1.2600 , Sevice Pack 3 , Build 2600. Even in my system properties it comes up as SP3. The question is, when I go to Windows Update & check my history,it shows Service Pack 3 w/ a red X & yellow ? mark. If I click on it the info is an error code of 0x80080008. I've checked my Add/Remove programs list and it is listed but doesn't have an "Installed On" date listed. So, do I have it, or is it just saying I do.Or,do I have a messed up installation? It appeared the install went fine,no errors or warning popups. Thanx !!

Outlook Express: "Unable to open the Address Book ..." error

I've just started getting this error message when I try to open the Address Book in OE. It occurs on all user accounts: Outlook Express: "Unable to open the Address Book. The Address Book may not be installed properly". When I open up a message by double clicking on it I get "There was an error opening this message. An error has occurred" (Mac-like informativeness). I'm still able to view the message in the preview pane. I get the same message when I try to compose a new message. I can locate the Address Book according to its place in the registry, and it opens normally when I double click on it. Can anybody help here? I've just uninstalled Office 2000 a…

Hi there, I am wondering if someone can help me with this issue. We have recently changed a our proxy server and this particular program installed on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 server will not connect to the internet to check for updates automatically anymore. Instead it sends me an alert email to tell me that the automatic update failed. I have spoken to the manufacturers of the software and they inform me that it will use the Proxy settings for the local system account and that I need to change this. So i go into the registry looking for HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings and sure enough, the ol…

Handle count
by Guest Brion- 0 replies
We have 2 Windows 2003 fileservers. They are clustered, and this problem seems to impact them both. The handle count is enormous - it grows in a stepping sort of fashion until it reaches about 25,000 or so, then the server starts complaining about not being able to allocate from the shared pool, and then within a day or so after that it dies (if we don't reboot it first). Digging in a bit further, it looks like the System process is the one that is consuming all those handles and not closing them. Again, over time, the graph looks like a stair case. I ran Handle.exe, and many of the files do look like legitimate files that users actually have open. B…
