Remote Access to Windows 2008 ?
by Guest Patrick- 5 replies
We just install our first Windows 2008 Server. We find that when we use RDP to access it, it works as remote access (we haven't used /admin option). From the web, we learn that Windows 2008 supports 2 active session if TS is not installed. If it is true, we wonder why RDP session is a Console Session. Your advice is sought.

Is Offline Files the best option?
by Guest Ed from AZ- 7 replies

Management has decided we need to keep all our files on the server. Not a problem - except when the server is "unavailable" and we can't do anything! Is "Offline Files" the best option for making Word and Excel files available for editing when the server goes out so they can be updated when it comes back? What happens to the stability of the file if more than one user makes edits to the copy on their machine? Ed

DTC's is spiking CPU usage to 89% - on the desktop max is < 1% service.exe is reaching 5.3% and the desktop is < 1% what is going on.

by Guest Chris- 2 replies

Two of our machines cannot access the network resources, nothing was ever said to me and I don't usually check these two computer as they actually control our Atmosphere Environment and hardly get used. The backup of the data on these machiens gets pulled from the SBS2003 server itself - using copy commands. I have removed Symantec AV and PC Anywhere and am in the process of doing all Windows updates. The machines do have SP4 installed. The following messages are recorded in Event Log Event Type: Warning Event Source: MRxSmb Event Category: None Event ID: 3034 Date: 9/25/2008 Time: 10:17:06 AM User: N/A Computer: LV09 Description: The red…

Reinstalling Windows XP Pro after upgrades
by Guest Ed Wood- 6 replies

I have a June 2006 Windows XP Pro (WXPP) with SP2 Version 2002 SP3 build 2600 installed on my system. Somehow I picked up some viruses, which took me about 2 weeks to remove using AVG Internet Security V8, Spybot SD ver. 1.6.0, Malwarebytes v. 1.28, and RemoveIt Pro Enterprise v.4. I am not sure that they are totally removed yet, but I am trusting my antivirus/spyware/malware programs to catch them on future scans. There are still some corrupted WXPP files that need to be replaced. When I insert my WXPP disk in my drive, I get the following message: "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the C…

Kernel Mode Printer blocking policy is enabled
by Guest Brent- 3 replies

After doing some Windows updates (Auguest 08 updates), I have an issue with users no longer having their printer available in the TS. The event viewer showed the Kernel Mode Printer blocking policy is enabled error.. I have disabled the following policy - Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode drivers. Now I no longer get the error message, but the printer is still not present. Checking the event log now simply showes the printer is marked for deletion - Printer xxx in on yyy in session 2 was deleted. That is the only mention of the printer. All was working fine before the latest updates were installed. Terminal Server 2003 R2 SP2, with Office…

Regarding the event viewer application log.
by Guest talgam- 2 replies

I have received a red X on the left hand pane of the Application log in the event viewer. It won't display the application log on the right. I am not allowed to do a destructive restore because extra programs that were installed, we installed by a third party and he doesn't have contact with them. He does not have a Windows CD because it has the recovery sector on the hard drive. Is there any way that this problem can be fixed. I have not come across this problem before and I can use all the help I can get on this problem.

I have lost my CD, but still have the product key from the CD. I need to reinstall Xp. Can I just borrow someone else's CD to reinstall Xp and then enter the product key for the CD that I purchased several years ago (rather than the product code on the borrowed CD)? If that is not possible, can Microsoft help me or do I need to bite the bullet and purchase another upgrade Xp CD?

Windows 2008 Memory Caching
by Guest C S S- 0 replies

We are starting to test Windows 2008 in a virtual environment. We created an instance of 2008 on top of a VMWare server, and assigned this VM 12GB of ram for windows (no reserved amount on the host). What we're seeing is that Win 2K8 itself (in performance manager) claims it's using only 2GB of ram. However it looks like it's keeping 6GB tied up for cache. Since this is being used, on the host server instead of just 2 GB being allocated to the VM, it's allocating 8 GB of host memory. My question is, what is this cacheing in 2008, is it like the pre-fetching in Vista? And is there a way to disable it? We are much less concerned with performance imp…

Hi, I 'm running windows XP SP2 on thinkcentre M55 with Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @2.33GHZ. I'm trying to tune the memory on windows xp sp2 so I can have 4 GB of RAM. I can see the 4GB of RAM in the Bios, but windows can't see it because it's 32 bit. I found articles with Microsoft so you can tune the memory. I followed the documentation and modified the bootini. I didn't have much luck I can only see 3GB in window mean while 4GB in the BIOS. This is the bootini "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /PAE /3GB /Userva=2900 /NoExecute=OptOut". Any Idea, note the machine supports DEP.

Command Line Escape Characters (WinZip)
by Guest sean_walsh- 4 replies

Hi I have a zip file that is encrypted with a tricky password, which I need to extract from a .bat file. The password is: -33,33_(}33"33*33=33|33^%33 So I try this line in a .bat file: "c:\program files\winzip\wzunzip.exe" -o -s-33,33_(}33"33*33=33|33^%33 MYZIP.zip C:\MYZIP\ This hits a problem because of the double-quote in the password. "ERROR - missing closing quote on argument" This also doesn't work: -s"-33,33_(}33""33*33=33|33^%33" I believe the ^ char is an escape character for DOS Command Line arguments, but that doesn't work. I tried to simplify this by changing the password temporarily to 33"33 and using the following arguments: -s33^"3…

Where are local files stored with folder Redirection
by Guest Jon Osborn- 1 reply

We are implementing Folder Redirection very soon (just my documents and desktop). We have put all the IT people (3 of us) on Redirection for testing but we have come up with some questions. Everything works fine, but where are the local files store at? If we take our laptops home we are still able to open/modifiy files like normal. If I open my documents and modify a file the C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents does not refelect the change. But if we are offline the My Documents (off desktop) will show the change. Where does it store the files? One users C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents is blank but all files are aviable …

I have gone into the Advanced tab under Data Execution to select the option to have DEP not be used on RDP - rebooted the laptop and still have the issue. What is the next step to correct this issue?

Group Membership Caching - Solution for VPN available?
by Guest Herbert Storpe- 0 replies

1.) Remote User connected via VPN 2.) Run gpresult on client and check user group membership 3.) Add User on your AD controller to a new group 4.) Run gpupdate /force on the remote machine 5.) Run gpresult again As you can see Group Membership will no be updated. Membership refresh only happens during logon to the machine (not possible here, VPN User is using a software certificate for auth which is only available to the user after logon). QUESTIONS: 1.) Is there a solution available to trigger the client to update Group Membership Caching? 2.) Is this a known issue and solved with Vista? Thanks a lot, Herbert
