Need Recommendation for Bare Metal Recovery
by Guest Dragon- 2 replies

Hi, We have many remote sites with small servers. I am looking for a solution to make a daily backup of these server for bare metal recovery purposes. These servers are non-critical and all their data is available from central location. goal here not to provide fully redundent recovery but to speed up recovery time. We can always get another server, and download all of the informatiom from the central location. But if I have an expensive solution (USB?) that I can plug into the server and simply restore the OS and existing data from the device, it will make recovery faster than manually installing OS and downloading data from the central. It could be…

Issue with Remote Desktop MMC Plug in
by Guest Tom- 0 replies

Hello, Something has changed on one of our networks to prevent a Remote Desktop MMC from logging into remote desktops without prompting for password. We used to be able to click on any remote desktop in the list and it would just log in without prompting but now the remote machines are prompting for password despite updating the passwords stored in the connections. I checked the policy thoroughly and also ran rsop.msc to make sure a policy wasn't doing it. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

Printer Icons not displaying

I have a customer whose printer icons no longer show. Next to the printer queues, it now shows the generic icon for unrecognized programs. There is a printer icon in system32\shell32.dll that I can use in the folder options and file types, but I don't know which file needs to be associated with the designated printer icon.

Restricting Local User Account
by Guest AJ- 1 reply

Hi folks I need to create a local account on a standalone server (non domain member) which will have the ability to create local user accounts, but not mess with the administrator account (thinking member of power user group here). In addition to this I need to make sure that this user cannot browse the network in anyway and only be granted specific permissions to certain directories. The permissions to the directories can be performed by locking down with NTFS permissions but I cannot find a way to disable network browsing without messing with the server service which is required for user account management. I need to hide all network servers/domain from thi…

Suppose I want to copy a file or folder from C:\ to D:\, but with the same folder path structure. For example, if I copy C:\MyFolder\MyFile.doc to D:\, it should save to D:\MyFolder\MyFile.doc, creating MyFolder in D: if necessary. If I copy C:\MyFolder\Songs\ to D:\, it should copy all files in Songs\ to D:\MyFolder\Songs\, creating folders as needed. Perhaps the xcopy command do it, but I prefer to drag/drop using Explorer. How would I do it?

printers in TS Sessions

Good morning! Okay - Vera N, Patrick R, Jeff P, Lan W - do not jump on me for this....this is not something that I set up...I am simply trying to clean up a mess! We have a client in a WIN2003 AD environment with one TS (running on WIN2003 SP2 Enterprise w/12GB RAM) and - for whatever reason - the security group "Domain Users" was added to the local Administrators group on the TS box. At the moment I can not remove this (I know! I know! I know!). Anyway - question is about printing. All of the users naturally see all of the printers. Question Number 1 - is there a limit as to how many printers can actually show up? I ask because for al…

Microsoft Migrates From Servers to Supercomputers
by Guest abhi- 1 reply

Once relegated to the realm of national laboratories, supercomputers have started to move downstream. These days, any business with $25,000 to $100,000 to spare can buy a computing system capable of cranking through very difficult tasks. And, in fact, more businesses than ever have started to buy exactly these types of systems as competitive pressure mounts to perform complex operations faster. With this in mind, Microsoft’s interest in what’s known as high- performance computing (HPC) makes a lot of sense. The world’s largest software maker this week released a new, specialized version of its Windows operating system built to distribute tasks across large grou…

Log Off, Disconnect, but no Shutdown
by Guest JBradshaw- 11 replies

A previous admin created a GPO setting that removed the shutdown option from the start menu of machines in various OUs. I am trying to do some testing on a machine using RDP, and for some reason, it, also, does not have a shut down option on the start menu. I need to be able to shutdown via RDP. I have scoured our GPO looking for where I can add this option. I have move the machine to its own OU and verified that User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Start Menu and Taskbar does NOT have the "Remove and Prevent Shut Down" option enabled. I have also used gpedit on the local machine to set this option to Disabled. I have rebooted the machin…

Hi, I've some quick questions. I've read alot about this, and couldnt find an exact answer. We running 2008 terminalservices in 2003 domain. I created a central store for my admx templates. I've copied english template from ts and swedish from a vista computer. Nothing crazy with that, right? Created one OU with my TS, and one gpo on that. Apply permissions is for me(for testing) and for the TS server. I use loopback policy. 2 questions. 1. When we us loopback with replace. How does it work? Doesn't it use the users usersettings then, or is it only replace the userpolicy that is in conflict? Reason is that I dont want any user polcy to be app…

How to disable additional printer installation.
by Guest Frank Church- 5 replies

Windows XP tends to redetect printers and add them over and over again, resulting in many duplicates of the same printer name. Is there a way to disable detection of new printers, or revert to the original printer if it is unplugged and reinserted? I would also like to disable addition of printers altogether, unless the admin enables to allow printers to be installed, even for Administrator accounts. Is there some way to do this? /vfclists

Warning message: Automatic Updates Disabled

I keep getting a Windows Security message that Automatic Updates for XP is disabled: 'click on this balloon to fix'. But nothing happens when I try to do this -- I get the window, and the box to tick for auto update, but it won't register. Strangely, when I check on Auto Update in my Control Panel, it shows as 'on' but I can't get rid of this possibly spurious Security warning. Any measures I can take?

Windows XP SP3 Printing Problems
by Guest majorg- 4 replies

Hello, I work in a Windows 2003 domain environment, and we have 100 Windows XP clients. Using WSUS we have successfully upgraded a number of the client PCs, but have now discovered that many have them have developed printing problems with PDF and Office documents. It is taking about six minutes for the print dialog window to appear. As suggested by Microsoft, we have changed the settings for printers on our Windows 2003 print server so that print jobs are printed directly rather than spooled, and have done the following on the clients: 1. Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the open box to start the Sys…
