Windows 2008 Print Server
by Guest LilDeb- 5 replies

Hi There, I hope I am posting this to the right board.... We are slowly starting to introduce Server 2008 into our environment. One of the projects I have been assigned, is to decommission our Print Serve Appliances, and migrate them over to the 2008 environment. I have done some reading on this and know that I can assign the print server role, manually add the printers or have them automatically discovered, create the shares, update the drivers, etc….. My question is this: How many printers can one server manage? We are not a large environment, and have approximately 160 servers. Currently we have 4 print serve devices that are divided based on flo…

I installed Windows Server Backup and have the following situation: When I run anything but scheduled backup, I am provided a window showing local devices to back up the files to. When I select Scheduled Backup and select the files to be backed up, I get an error msg stating there is no local drive to back the files up to instead of the Local Drive option screen. I've tried it several times and can't seem to figure out what is going wrong. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. KenP

I have terminal server that appears to have a screensaver being enabled through the users desktop policy. We have the desktop policy set to lock after 10 minutes. When they are logged into TS, both sessions will lock. The local desktop and the TS desktop. They are not disconnected. I have the TS screen saver disabled through group policy but the screensaver still starts after 10 minutes. Is there a way to prevent the desktop sreen saver policy from being applied to the TS Session? Thanks for the help, Jeff

ntbackup missing tapes

Hi, I have a Win2003 Small Business Server, and want to restore a set of 2 tapes with only the firts tape (the 2nd is missing). When I try to catalog the 1st tape, at the end appears a message telling me than insert the next tape. After I press "cancel" no catalog (partially) was restore. Does any one knows how to restore a partially catalog to recover some information from the tape? I think it could be possible becase in NT4, ntbackup has /missingtape switch that makes to read the catalog from the available tapes from the set. In Win2K Srv that switch does not exist, but works as is. (Document ID : 244805: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244805/…

.bat file to copy files using current date as part of name?
by Guest +Bob+- 5 replies

I need to set up a bat file that will use xcopy to copy a directory from one drive to another. The resulting directory needs to incorporate the date that it is copied into the name. Something like this: xcopy c:\bigdir\*.*/s/e d:\bigdir-10-oct-2008\*.* I need to do this on a regular basis, so how can I pull the date within the bat file into a variable? Also, assuming I can get the date into a variable named something like "DateIn" will a command like this work: xcopy c:\bigdir\*.*/s/e d:\bigdir-%DateIn%\*.* Thanks,

RDP Not Working since installing patch MS08-067
by Guest Greg H- 3 replies

I'm hoping someone can advise on a problem we are having. Since installing the Microsoft Patch MS08-067 last Friday, we cannot connect to two servers via Remote Desktop. The rest of our 70 servers are not having this problem. The RDP services are running. The firewall is off. I disabled and then renabled Remote Desktop on the My Computer Properties. I haven't restarted the server yet but will be trying that after 5 PM today. There are no errors in the logs regarding RDP. If you had this problem and were able to correct it, please advise. Thanks in advance. Greg

Windows Server 2003 Boot Problem
by Guest Brian Mosher- 2 replies

I have an old Win2K Advanced Server that I'd possibly like to upgrade to Windows Server 2003. I got the trial version from Microsoft and burned the 2 ISO images to CDs. The CD isn't bootable, though. It definitely has a boot sector on it, but just boots right into Server2K. The CD light blinks for a second on bootup and then moves right on. If I put the Server2K CD in, it will boot into that install fine. Any ideas? Thanks, Brian Mosher

Server Performance
by Guest Redleg6- 5 replies

We have a client-server application that we are having perfomance problems on. The server runs a very complex medical archiving application that is accessed by clients. The server runs Win2003 R2, the clients are a mixture of XP and 2000. Occassionally the server's avg disk queue length will increase suddenly and stay high (100+) for 15-20 seconds, drop down and then repeat again. When it is high the performance on the workstations suffers significantly. When the avg disk queue length increases pages\sec increases only a little. What could be our problem?

VPN connections on TS server

Terminal Server 2003. I have routing and remote access configured. I see the users connect to the server. But when I try to make a remote access connection back to their machine the entire connection including the client (remote) machine gets hung. I disconnect the session from the routing and remote access console, but the remote machine gets hung. The remote machine is running Vista SP1. The problem is only on this 1 remote access server (TermServer). My old TS running windows 2003 sp2 can make the connection fine. Any idea? I am trying to look through group policy to see if something is blocking this connection from working properly Thanks, SJM…

I am using the built in ftp command in Windows XP to connect to a Unix Server ih the same network subnet. When I start ftp and the ip address of the server it asks me for a user name and password which I type in and it works fine. I am trying to write a series of commands into a batch file and I would like to include the user name and password within the batch file so that the user is not prompted for them. Is there a way to do this. Your help would be appreciated. Regards, Guido
