Relakks, VPN, and svchost.exe
by Guest Bruno- 1 reply

Hi, Whenever I use Windows XP SP2 with the VPN provider Relakks (https://www.relakks.com/), one instance of svchost.exe crashes (1) after a few minutes. The VPN connection was created using the Windows New Connection Wizard. I didn't install any VPN programs. If I double click on the VPN connection icon in the system tray after svchost.exe has crashed, the status window pops up then immediately disappears. Even if I restart the services manually (except for "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)"--I get an "access denied" error message when I try to restart it), I have only a very limited access to the Internet (web downloads started …

app inhereted permissions
by Guest Guillermo G. Lovato- 4 replies

Hello, is it possible to inherit permission from an application on a folder(like on AS/400)?. we don't want the user to have access to the folder or files of an application(that runs on a network shared folder for instance) but if he launches the application(which he do has perms) the app MUST have access to those files. so, is it possible to make the app impersonate automatically(embedding a user inside the code) to have access to those files in the context of the user but hte user itself doesn't?(like an embedded runas but not on the commandline as the user must not know this credential nor have way to discover it). regards, Guillermo

Can I save my system files on a DVD?
by Guest Carrie- 22 replies

Just spent the last few days getting an error message on dialup (I wrote about in another post, resolved by putting in a new modem) but got me to thinking... When I got my DELL XPS 400 (has Win XP "media edition" I think is "professional"?) I didn't get a restore or backup WIN cd with it. Apparently they stopped giving them with it, and said you don't need it, the restore files are built in. After having the problem with error message, involving a system file (though replacing the modem fixed it, the file involved was in drivers IN the system files) I'm wondering if and how I can save the system files? I had tried this before, the folder i386. It's too big for a cd …

I recently reinstalled Windows 2003 with Terminal Services because the old one started to behave badly. Everything went just fine, but I notice one oddity. The users who are using dual monitors also use the /span flag for obvious reasons, but this flag now causes the desktop icons to disappear/reappear with regular windows when Show Desktop button is pressed. To clarify, all icons disappear when this button is pressed or when "show the desktop" option is selected from the right click menu of the task bar. They also appear again when these options are selected again, just like regular windows do. This does not happen when the /span flag is not used. I fin…

RemoteApp dissapears from taskbar
by Guest James- 1 reply

Hi, I have an evaluation copy of Server 2008 installed and have successfully set up RemoteApp using TS Gateway. Users can connect and use the App fine from the internet, however at random intervals when the RemoteApp window is in the background or minimised, it's entry disappears from the taskbar and the associated mstsc.exe processes also disappear. The user receives no error or warning message, the window simply vanishes. They then must reinitiate another RemoteApp connection to their session. I have not been able to find anything on this online except for a suggestion that it may be due to the connection becoming idle and being dropped / lost over th…

Quick Launch icons randomly changed and odd program doubles
by Guest Canid- 6 replies

I've been getting a couple annoying glitches for the past few months on my copy of Wndows XP Pro. I doubt they are related, but I'll address them both at once... One thing that has happened several times, is I will log in to find the Quick Launch icons randomly reassigned. If I right click and select properties, the correct icon is shown in the "[show Desktop, Mozilla Firefox, Windows Live Messenger, etc] Properties" box. They will be back to normal when the computer is restarted, but while I'm using it, the only way to get the correct icon back is to create a new Quick Launch entry for each item. The other glitch may or may not be Windows' fault. I'm getti…

Explorer not functioning
by Guest Sam- 5 replies

Hi, I got some kind of nasty virus on my machine so I ran Ad-Aware with its anti-virus engine to remove it. It found it and needed a restart and to run before Windows loaded in order to completely remove it. Somehow, the virus corrupted Ad-Aware and made it delete explorer.exe instead of the virus. The computer and settings load normally but when I try to log on it immediately logs back off. I tried doing a repair install of Windows, and it did absolutely nothing. I even tried reinstalling Windows in another folder (I don't want to lose my documents and pictures), but from the new installation I don't have access to any of the files from the other …

I may have messed up... I just did a brand new 2008 install "without hyper-v" because the one included in 2008 was beta code. I was assuming I'd be able to download and install Hyper-V either from MSDN subscribers area, or from the public downloads area. Is it possible to download/install RTM Hyper-V to a an install of "Server 2008 Without Hyper-V"? If so, what do I need to download and where can I find it? Thanks.

Does anyone experience any issues by doing so --diable nullsession in registry? Thanks!

Can you remove DNS from Domain Controller and reinstall to repair?
by Guest Saral6978- 14 replies

I'm having issues with the DNS server service - when set to automatic it won't allow my DC to boot - hangs on Preparing Network Connections. If I set it to Manual it boots up and I can login and then I start DNS manually after login. I believe the problem started after a recent MS Update. I'm toying with the idea of uninstalling DNS and reinstalling while it is still a DC with Active Directory. Can I do that or no?

KMS Question
by Guest Tim Patterson- 1 reply
I have just set up a KMS service instance on Server 2008. The question I have is can this instance activate both Vista clients and Server 2008 clients or do I need one KMS service for Vista and another for Server 2008. The reason that I am confused is that in my Volume Licensing web page I have a KMS key available that is attached to Vista and also one for Server 2008. When I installed the KMS service on Server 2008 with the slmgr tool it says I have a group B license (which is fine for the versions of Server 2008 that I am using). Any insight into this would be very helpful! Thanks, ~Tim

change file names in folder
by Guest TomC- 7 replies

I have scanned many documents and saved them in a folder. Little did I realize at the time that the file name that was generated places semicolons in the time field. Now I need to copy these folders to a disk, and the software tells me that semicolons cannot be a part of the file name. Is there some way I can globally eliminate the semicolons in each file name in the folder or will I have to manually change every file name individually? Thanks for any help you can give me. Tomc

Hello, We are planing a migration to a new domain due to some company changes. We can move all XP's with the ADMT from Microsoft but that does not handle Vista installation (i know that version 3.1 of the ADMT tool will be able to do that but that demands a Windows 2008 server and we don't have that). Does anyone have an idea on how to move the Vista PC's and Vista user profiles to a new domain without lossing settings ?. /Strunk

Client login on TS triggers msiexec.exe problem
by Guest Kjell- 6 replies

Hi I'm having this wierd problem with my TS Win2003 Std Ed Some but not all clients triggers 1, 2 or 3 processes of msiexec.exe when login in with remote desktop (mstsc.exe). This might be a completely normally behaivour, but the pattern I have makes it a problem, and I've never seen this before. 1. The msiexec.exe locks up 50-70% of the resources, making it into a severe lagging situation for all. 2. It never stops, the same host machine (client) will trigger the same set of msiexec.exe running for identical period of time every *** time it's login in, it doesn't matter if I'm login in using a domain account or a local account, it's the client mac…
