Legacy Operating Systems

I have instructions from a supplier to start an .exe file using "Run As" and "The following user ... Administrator" I did this and entered the proper administrator password. This results in the error message "Unable to log on: Unknown user name or bad password." On this computer my regular account is an adminstrator account, and the password works there. So I need help resolving the error message.

I had mentioned this in another group, but I realized it's better suited to this group. The shield icon on my Taskbar says it has been downloading updates most of the afternoon/evening and it's only at 24%. I have no idea what these updates are - it seems that it USED to ask me. Isn't there a way to set this so that is does ask and I can choose which ones I want to install? I have Win XP (Pro, I think) with SP3.

I went through a big round of updates and patches on my 20003 SBS. Unfortunately the updates "broke" .Net 2 which was previously installed. I tried to uninstall .net, but no luck. and then I tried to repair .net, also with to no success, getting an error that the install package couldn't be located. I downloaded the package (NetFx20SP1_x86.exe) and tried to reintall on top of the exisitng but that failed as well. How can I get .net 2 reinstalled and working? any help or input is greatly appreciated.

Our users work exclusively through RDP. For some reason a handful of users were given local admin rights, so that they could send each other messages using Task Manager. I found this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc786099.aspx Which says "You must have Message permission in order to send messages". And I looked at what rights Remote Desktop Users has, and it includes the Send Message right. But... our users that don't have local admin rights still can't send a message using this method. Can anyone else use this Send Message option, without having local admin rights? TIA

My company is going to star tthe process of buidling a new File and Print server for our domain. I wanted to get opinions on using Server 2008 for this job. Right the a 2003 server is performing this duty. I need this to be a clean and painless operation. I've been thinking I should just go with 2008 32bit, to avoid any driver issues in the migration. What is the general consesus on this? If there are other caveats with this migration we could deploy a new 2003 server for this job. We have a lot of Shares,printers and files on the old server and I need a seamless move. Also any tools to help aid in the process, and perhaps a checklist of best practic…

Hey all. I thought protected mode only worked in Vista? I've just built a system (AM2 5000+). XP SP3. And I can tick this option?? So, why can I select it if I dont use Vista? Isnt it usually ghosted in XP? Is it because I'm using a CPU that supports it or something?

I'm trying to update a registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Control Panel -> Accessibility -> Keyboard Response -> Flags) and refresh the registry without restarting explorer.exe (or without logging off). I've tried UpdatePerUserSystemParameters from user32.dll, which is supposed to update HKCU, but it won't work. Is there something about this key that won't allow a refresh like the rest of HKCU?

I need help with a simple script. I want to put the output of a command into an environment variable, and I tried this construction in a CMD file: for /f "usebackq delims=" %%i in (`D:\USR\BINTU\MKSNT\date +%a`) do set dayofweek=%%i The moment this line of the script executes, the script is terminated with no error. It looks to me like the date.exe command I am calling is exiting in a way that doesn't allow a return back to the script that called it. The %dayofweek% environment variable is NOT being set. Any thoughts on how I can get this to work? -- Will

I have win xp with ie7; every time I'm in explorer and drag and drop, I get the windows protection fault error, then another, then dr watson and then explorer restarts. does anyone know how to fix this? thanks, dennis

I upgraded from windows 2003 to windows 2008 (enterprise edition for both)...and upgrade was fine (all drivers updated too). when I put in the IP address...and click ok...the IP and subnet mask go to 0.0.0.0. the gateway and dns server stays. i go to the 2nd tab (tcp v4), and I see 0.0.0.0 for the IP, then the 10.5.x.x that I entered. I remove the 0.0.0.0 and go back to the original box..and I see it the way I set it up. I click ok..and the same as before. Is there some type of ipautoconfiguration or something that keeps putting this 0.0.0.0 in there..and how can I turn it off? this is just a test server. any help is appreciated. it is a dell2650, broadcom…

Due to the fact that NTFS is a better system, I decided to convert from FAT 32 to NTFS using the XP built-in converter. I've been trying to get my computer back up and running several times now. I'm running a Dell XPS2010 and I've had many, many problems. I've recently reverted back to XP after many many months of crappy drivers for Vista causing all kinds of headaches. I try to install the new Windows search program only to have it tell me I need to enable terminal services. I go to services....and it's not there. Why is it that after I have downloaded every upgrade in the book, including Service Pack 3, when I go into the upgrade site, it now requests that I validate Windows XP and then will not validate and tells me I may have a counterfiet copy? Can anyone tell me where to go and how to overcome this. I have been using this program from some time. Under what circumstances can a user's registry hive under HKEY_USERS remain loaded (or get reloaded) after a Windows XP system is rebooted--but before the user logs on? I'm hearing about users who are losing their local profile because their hive is in use even after a reboot. We use an antispyware program that loads all the user hives while it runs. If it crashes, the hives it loads don't unload from HKEY_USERS; a reboot normally clears this up. But a very few users are reporting that the HKEY_USERS entries persist even AFTER a reboot (which I didn't think was possible). I have created a few scheduled tasks which will run a .BAT file. The BAT file contains a line to run NTBACKUP. If I run the .bat file from command line, NTBACKUP starts. If I run the Scheduled Task from Task scheduler, it will shows it runs and quits after a few seconds. We want to give a user access to a server via Remote Desktop and only give them access to a single program. This works perfectly fine, howerver when the user (or us as Administrators) close the program, the program closes but their is no way to exist out of the session unless you disconnect. By no way I mean the screen is just blue, looks like explorer.exe. I have a Windows 2003 Server Environment. Thank You

Hi there I have about 60 of the LUCOMS~1.exe running in my task managers' processes window. I've tried to terminate them but am not allowed, I've checked other peoples posts and they all seem to only have the problem of one process sucking their cpu dry. I installed spybot but it didn't remove them, they all take up exactly 32k of memory, and my commit charge is 847M/978M (I'm pretty sure this is a bad thing - as is having 123 processes running when I'm typing on here, with explorer notepad and the taskmanager the only other things open). Hi, Before installing SP3 when i came to unlock a computer it used to remember my username so all i had to do is enter the password. Now after installing SP3 the user name is blank and has to be entered each time. So now when a computer is locked I can't easily tell who locked it. Is it possible to set it so the username is remembered with SP3 Tom

I have a Lenovo notebook and the windows key is on the sticker on the bottom. I want to no a fresh build but I can not find the windows XP install disk. I do however have other windows XP CDs from other computers. Can I use one of these other CDs but the key off the lenovo copy to rebuild the laptop?

In Win XP I can not delete an empty direction. I have taken off Read only attributes as well. Won't work in cmd.exe either. Any ideas ? Thanks.
