Running XP Pro Media Center Addition & for some reason the shortcut icons on the desktop will not work. The main "e" internet icon works ok but any other icon I place on the desktop will not. If I double click the icon it start to open the web page for like a split second & then close. If I do a double double click (4 times) it works but it then will open two of the same pages. Also if I try to go to my favorites & single click the site it will also just flash the screen & then nothing. Strange thing is, if I log onto another account like my sons on the same computer his will work fine. We're all using the same Google toolbar & McAfee…

Terminal Server Performance

Good Day to all I have a terminal server running 180 connections currently, of these 150 are low end connections only using a web application and with them on the system is humming at a mere 10% CPU usage, but once I load my other 30 power users with Email, and office then the usage rises to 70% CPU Usage. Most of the CPU usage is used by Outlook as they have PST which are 2GB's and more. The worst response on the power user session is with Email very slow at times. I am considering installing Exchange as currently we use POP mailboxes from our ISP. Will this alleviate some CPU resources or will it be the same. In essence is Exchange mail bette…

When remotely rebooting a server, Terminal Services reboots as disabled, rather than Automatic as it is set, forcing a physical logon and changing terminal services back to automatic. No error message accompanies this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

by Guest Ven- 10 replies

Hi! All, I have a situation here. I wanted to install the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition on a DELL Optiplex 755 with an 80 GB SATA drive. A couple of minutes into the installation I get the blue screen " 0X0000007B(0XF789E63C,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000) asking me to "chkdsk" the hard drive. After searching the Internet I get to know that Win Server 2003 doesnt provide the SATA drivers. I checked with DELL and they say they cannot help as I am changing the default O.S of Optiplex. the Intel chipset is "Intel NH82801 I0" and I dont find the chipset on the Intel website. Nor could I find the drivers elsewhere. I am missing something her…

RE: Volume Control Missing after WinXP Update I have a similar problem. After an update to my Microsoft Lifecam webcam which took forever to install because it also installed Framework 3 service pack one and something named CardSpace. It didn't let me cancel the installation after I realized I was getting more than I wanted. Why I needed close to 300 MB of update simply to improve my Webcam 1000 I'll never know. On reboot, the sound icon was gone. I went to Control Panel/Sound and restored it to the tray. This morning on bootup, it was missing again. The item is still checked to "show in tray," clicking on the Windows System file, sndvol32.exe, …

Shortcuts, Static or Dynamic?
by Guest MJ- 7 replies
Recently I have been SURPRISED that shortcuts to applications and files seem to have become "dynamic" in the sense that if you rename the target file the shortcut picks up the new name. In the past, shortcuts were static, and if you changed the name of the target you needed to revist the short cuts. The problem is that we are moving many of our files/applications from an older server to a new server location and renaming the old files it show that they have been copied to the new location. With static shortcut targets, renaming the files "BROKE" the link and will cause the user to think, but with the shortcuts picking up the name change the link is not …

1/2 hour after starting computer briefly freezes
by Guest Don- 2 replies

Each time I start my computer (from shut off / standby or hybernate), approximately 1/2 hour later it freezes up for about 15 minutes. Screen freezes, hour glass rotates, can't do anything with it...doesn't matter if I'm online or off. After 15 minutes everything returns to exactly where I was when it happened (I lose no information) & I can go on doing what I was doing. Annoying & would like to solve it if anyone has experienced this too.

I'm going to be rebuilding a server in a couple of months. It is a Dell PowerEdge 2850 connected to a PowerVault box. There are 2 RAID 1 arrays in the PowerEdge and a RAID 10 in the PowerVault. Id like to image the 3 arrays before wiping the server and rebuilding. I currently have Backup Exec 9.1 Looking for a way to do this. Low cost would be a good thing... Received a replacement phone today. Several of the items that I need to install start with a .exe on the Laptop, they then run a cab file on the phone itself. however, everytime I run one of the .exe files I get an error saying there is something else that hasn't finished installing. I have rebooted 3 times. No change. I go to the task manager and I notice there are 2 msiexec's running at all times. I kill them and they immediately reappear. I have Google searched for fixes and i have tried every one i found (changing registry keys for the installer, using msconfig to stop services, deleting the Temp files, etc.). I am at a loss. When several of my programs open, I get an error that says CTL3D32.dll is not the correct version, this version is for Win/NT systems. I did not intentionally change it, so I assume some program did. Oddly enough the applications do load and work properly after I click OK. Should I just return the original one form the 98 install files? Thanks
