Hope This Isn't OT

FYI; To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts. (Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied W…

Yet another "No Sound" problem

I’m sorry, I’m almost certain you guys have got to be tired of hearing this: I’m using a Gateway 5028 with AMD Athlon 64 Processor and running the Media Center Windows XP version 2002 with service pack 3. After not scanning my computer for over a month (I hope I never do that again!) my computer picked up lots of viral infections. Without thinking, I had my antivirus program get rid of them even though it warned that doing so might make the computer unstable because of the files infected. Almost immediately my computer began acting up (programs not responding, etc.) so I did a system restore with backup. During the process I got a RUN DLL error mes…

backup causes BSOD
by Guest Virgilijus- 7 replies

I have been using Retrospect for quite some time with no problems. Recently I upgraded the hard drive to a larger drive and now Retrospect abends with a BSOD when it starts. After trying to fix the problem with them, it was figured out that the Volume Shadow Copy is the culprit. Why would VSC start causing problems just because I changed to a larger hard drive??? I am running win-xp sp3.

Uninstalling IE7 before installing XP SP3
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 16 replies
I am planning to install the SP3 automatic update. I use Firefox as my default browser but I do have IE7 installed in case I need it in an unforeseen circumstance. I saw where IE7 can't be uninstalled after installing SP3. Question: Is it good practice to uninstall IE7 before updating XP to SP3 -- and then reinstalling IE7? In Add/remove programs, I get a long list of programs that might not work after uninstalling IE7 because they were installed after. Most are windows updates and I don't have any idea what they do. Any Advice? Stan Hilliard

I installed a canon ip3500 on XP pro, In printing profiles I set up paper source to "front for plain paper". Sometimes when I log off and log back on later, it changes back to "rear tray". This is very annoying. I also have 10 user accounts I need to create and I don't want to go through this hassle of changing paper source for each account when it changes back on its own.Can anyone tell me how I can either tweak the driver to change the default paper source to front, or make a change in the registry? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

External drive flukey
by Guest PanHandler- 3 replies

Running XP Pro SP2, 2 GB RAM, P4 Dual Core 3GB. Windows won't always open an external 500 GB USB2 HD with approx. 180 GB free space. I hear the chime when it connects but it won't appear in My Computer. If I then turn the drive off I hear the chime again. It takes several (3 to 6 or 7) attempts and then it will behave normally. It was fine until it got to about the 'half full' point and then started this behavior, getting worse as it filled up. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If we say "forty, sixty, seventy, eighty and ninety", why don't we say "twoty,…

Repartition a mirrored drive
by Guest Mark M Simonian- 0 replies

I am using business server 2003 and Dell originally set the active partition © (1 Drive - there are two partitions C and F) to just 10 gigabytes and I need to grow that space. I have a dynamic mirrored drive and have physically disconnected it - the second hard drive. I am using RAID 1. I will use EASEUS Partition Manager Server Edition to do the repartition. What do I have to do with the mirror settings before I perform the repartitioning. Righjt Click and remove, delete, or break the mirror. Secondly if the repartition goes well, how do I reset the second hard drive to mirror the new size? -- *************************** Mark M Simonian, MD 681 …

io.sys and msdos.sys
by Guest yaugin- 8 replies

I have two hard drives in my system, and the C: drive is not the drive where Windows is installed. However, Windows constantly places io.sys and msdos.sys on the C: drive. If I delete them, Windows automatically re-creates them. Worse, it seems as though Windows actually overwrites the filesystem area where those files are placed -- some of my other files suddenly became 0 file size.

I have Dell Inspiron E1505, 1GB RAM, 80 GB HD, updated to SP3. I originally used Internet Explorer 6 to register on half a dozen hobby forums in 2006, then soon upgraded to IE7 but about 6 months later I begin to find it impossible to login to any of these forums after literally over 1500 times among them all. I sell items of interest to the members of these forums so I actively participate in on-going discussions. After about 6 months of easy access, I began to experience login problems which take the following nature: The sites accept my user name and password, thank me for logging in and then proceed to take me back to the login in screens again and show m…

Error modifying registry key
by Guest Gruff the Elder- 3 replies

XP Pro sp3 I'm trying to temporarily disable McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.5. This is installed on a laptop that is NOT a member of a domain but is sometimes connected to a corporate network. McAfee's anti-tampering feature won't let the services be stopped and McAfee was installed (by corp) without installing the console that permits turning off the McAfee anti-tampering feature. However, a McAfee KB article reveals that anti-tampering can be disabled by changing a registry key. However, regedit gives the error: "Cannont edit LockDownEnabled. Error writing the value's new contents." I've checked the permissions for this key, and the Administrato…
