Will 768MB RAM be OK, even in Safe Mode? 1 2
by Guest Angus Rodgers- 34 replies

I've recently doubled my system RAM to 512MB, with no problems. There's room on my motherboard (ASUS A7V8X-X) to plug in another similar 256MB module. (I don't think I want to add 512MB merely because it might be useful when/if I get around to dual-booting some version of Linux. A total of 768MB ought to be enough. I would rather not have to fiddle with MaxPhysPage=39999 - or what- ever else would be needed if I had 1GB or more memory - unless it is absolutely necessary, in which case I will think again.) In system.ini at the moment, I have MaxFileCache=163840 (160MB), and (presumably much less important) MinFileCache=8192 (8MB). From what little I've …

I will be installing a new system and have no experience with the 64-bit version, only the 32-bit version. On my 32-bit system I use NOD32 for my virus checking program and Acronis True Image as my backup program. Does anyone know if these programs run on Win XP Pro 64? If not, anyone have recommendations? (Do viruses run on a 64-bit system???) Thanks Ken K

What exactly does backup do? What gets backed up?
by Guest AJFconsult- 9 replies

I am having a frustrating disagreement with our paid IT consultants. I am running XP with the usual PC software. All of my data files are backed up to a network server. I want to backup the entire C drive - with the built-in XP function, or with a program that makes an image of the C: drive, etc. I want to be able to restore the PC to a prior date should there be a serious problem. Our IT consultants insist this is not possible. That, if I have a serious problem, my only choice is to restore to factory default settings, loading all programs again from original installation CDs, and then restoring the files backed up to our network server. Yet other c…

ChooseColor Dialog - Can Only Enter 2 Digits, Not 3 This bug has something to do with font sizes, display settings and XP not being "DPI Aware". To fix this, simply modify the COMDLG32.DLL file by increasing the input box size. This modification does not cause any problems at all. It is perfectly safe. Instructions: 1. Download "Resource Hacker" and install it: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ 2. Backup the original. Open the Run box and enter: xcopy C:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.DLL.bak 3. Run "Resource Hacker" and open: C:\WINDOWS\system32\COMDLG32.DLL 4. Expand "Dialog". 5. Deleting Files causes Freezup 1 2 3

A while ago I was trying to network my laptop (Win2K) to my desktop (W98se). I never did get it to work and gave up. I only wanted the network to copy my camera pictures to the laptop. I decided it was easier to copy files using flash memory sticks, than fight with the network connections. Anyhow, I am not posting this to get help with the network. I abandoned that project weeks ago. The problem is that ever since I tried to make this network work, I have been getting freezups. They occur particularly when I delete or move many files. For example, moving all the camera photos from my camera card (via USB card reader), caused the computer to just free…

After updating my Windows XP Pro machine from SP2 to SP3, I have run into a problem where winlogon.exe is consuming 50% CPU on an AMD dual core processor machine. Normal windows shutdown does not work. I am forced to hold down on the power button to shut down the computer. Any one else experiencing this problem? Any thoughts as to what is causing it (besides the SP3 update)?

I have an unusual problem that I haven't experienced before. I am unable to switch between application in Windows XP. If I have 2 instances of internet explorer open I am able to switch between them by clicking on the task bar or using ALT+TAB. This is the same for any program that I have 2 or more instances open for. The problem is when for example I have internet explorer open and notepad. I am unable to switch between the 2 applications using ALT+TAB or by clicking on the relevant programs box in the task bar. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know what is causing it? I hav done a full virus scan using the latest AVG with all updates …

Now i've started my computer i can't regenerate a registration key for XP Home Ed. I have the orginal key on the disk box, however when i ring the automated phone number they just tell me nothing can be done and i'm definately not paying £46 to ring the help-line. Problems migrating AD PDC
by Guest Paul Chow- 13 replies

I am trying to migrate from an old W2K3 Active Directory domain controller to a new one. Eventually I want to remove the old server from the network. I have never done this before and it is a little bit out of my league so I Googled, read and hopefully followed several articles that I found, but am still getting some errors logged. The list of AD users, computers etc replicated over to the new server, but when I turn off the old one no one can log in and there is no Internet access. I think both of these problems are due to DNS (which I really understand about 1% of). There are no errors in the DNS log though (just info that the service started). Most of th…

Migrating 2003 Terminal Server to new domain
by Guest hulbertmike- 1 reply

Hello, I am attempting to migrate a Windows 2003 Terminal Server (also the licensing server) from one domain to another. I am using a Quest tool that will migrate the TS server from current domain to new domain. The Quest tool will maintain profiles during this trasition. Because the server functions as a terminal server and licensing server, I am not sure if it will migrate properly and "just work". I am not certain if term server lic server requires same fully qulaified domain name of server, etc? I have already copied the appropriate GPO to lock down the TS server in the new domain, so this should not be a concern. Any ideas or has someone actu…

Windows Server 2008 - How do I determine the current Activation Hardware Tolerance value for a MAK activated machine? TIA! Hi all, I would like to find out how I can find the current value of the "Activation Hardware Tolerance" variable on a MAK activated machine. A few of the hard drives have been swapped and I'd like to take some RAM out of the machine. I assume this action will change hash value and therefore the AHT value... is there an slmgr.vbs command to querry this? Thanks for any help!
