16bit programs suddenly don't work anymore
by Guest DustWolf- 4 replies

Hello, I have a weird problem where on one of our Windows XP SP2 computers suddenly won't run 16bit programs anymore. The same 16-bit software that worked fine last week and works fine on all the other computers (including computers with identical software, hardware and settings) just won't budge. I doubleclick the icon and nothing happens. We have of course tried reinstalling it, and uninstalling, deleting all files and registry settings and reinstalling it to no avail. I can see Wowexec gets loaded in task manager but there is no trace of the application. I assume a temporary virus infection, which is no longer evident or software installation overwrote o…

by Guest Candice- 1 reply

I was having so many problems after installing Service Pack 3 that I restored my computer to an earlier date. But the problem with my device driver is still hapenning, "Attention 23K/0HZ frequency out of range". I've used the update wizard and fould 1 update for the "Plug and Play Monitor Properties". I also tryed to adjust the harware accelerator and the screen refresh rate (to the next lowest rate..it is set at 60 Hertz) but this did not help. Do I need to try a driver update from the Misrosoft Cataloge if so which one? Also I'm now getting these new error messages on the Advanced systems error log: Wed, Sept 17, 2008 Service Control Manager…

After a Windows XP auto update, I started experiencing the following errors at startup: RunDll32.exe - Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point_except_handler4_common could not be located in the dynamic link library MSVCRT.dll. A second dialog box comes up and says RUNDLL ERROR loading P17RUNE.DLL The specific procedure could not be found. The auto update from Microsoft included an intel motherboard update, NVIDIA update, etc. I can't seem to get rid of this error and it was all caused by Windows auto update feature. Please help me to get rid of these frustrating errors...thanks!

Cannot Remote Desktop to home PC after installing XP SP3
by Guest Evan Kaye- 6 replies

I know Remote Desktop isn't strictly speaking "Terminal Services", but it seemed to be the closest match. After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my home system, I cannot connect to it by Remote Desktop. The client seems to be trying to connect for a moment, and then automatically cancels less than a second later, with no error message (whereas I DO get an error if I try to connect to the wrong machine or port). I have tried connecting from outside my home network, from another PC on my network over the router's WAN interface, from the other PC directly to the local network address, and from the PC in question itself to the WAN interface (it won't l…

TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects
by Guest Dag Staale Jenssen- 8 replies

Hi We have a W2K8 configured as terminal server with a TS Gateway and TS Licensing server inn an SBS 2003 R2 domain. We can connect thru Remote Web Workplace (RWW) to the W2K8 TS. The connection works fine, and we are not experiencing any connections problems what so ever. We can also connect thru TS Gateway on the TS server, allowing us connection on port 443. When we connect thru the terminal server gateway, we can log on to the W2K8 TS. At random and persistently the RDP client will lose connection to the TS. The RDP client will reconnect time after time and so often that it is impossible to work. At times it will continuously connect, lose connecti…

Tabbed Browsing in Terminal Server 2008
by Guest JEC- 1 reply

I have recently just deployed my first 2008 terminal server. (Windows Server 2008 STD.) I noticed today that, when logged in as a user, I do not have tabs in Internet Explorer. I also noticed that the "New Tab" functions in the pull down menus is greyed out. I checkd the settings for tabbed browsing and it is enabled. I have also noticed that the administrator does not have this problem. Any ideas?

I'm trying to activate the Supplemental Language Services option to use right-to-left typing, but it asks me to put in the Windows XP disc so it can retrieve setup files. I do not have the Windows XP disc, and I was wondering if there is any other way to get the necessary files to activate this feature.

icon cache in a folder
by Guest 1776- 4 replies
I have a folder on my desktop that I keep about 25 files in, each with a unique icon. When I open the folder the systems takes nearly 10 seconds to display these files, but only the first time I open it. This discovery or caching does not persist across a reboot. I do not notice this behavior on any other folder on the computer, nor does the computer behave oddly or slowly in any other way. Is there a way that I can eliminate or reduce this icon discovery time, or is this expected behavior? The machine is a Dell B120 with 1.4GHz/1G running Windows XP SP3. Thank you. W.

Registry Maxed Out for System
by Guest dickf- 6 replies

I restored my Win XP system from an image backup. This backup was of SP 2. After restoring, MS Update installed SP3. Thereafter I sometimes get the following message during boot: "The system has reached the maximum size allowed for the system part of the registry. Additional storage requests will be ignored". Can anybody tell me if they have ever heard of this message and what might be causing it? I have fewer programs on my machine now, when i am getting the message than I did before the restore, before the message appeared.

Hi Everybody, I have a set of PDC and WTS running on Server 2008 (Enterprise x64). I have problems accessing files that seem to be SMB related. Server 2008 uses SMB2. Somebody told me that I could activate SMB1 on those servers. I have created a 32Bit DWORD called SMB1 in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrenControlSet\LanmanServer\Parameters and set the value to 1. (on both servers) This did not have any effect, netmon still reports SMB2. Can anybody help? Thanks for your time Ole

System Volume Information

I have a question about this folder. From what I've researched, it has to do with system restore functionality. All well and good. But curiosity go the better of me and I delved into the folder and find it take up an incredible amount of disk space. Also, when I run a defrag, which I do about once a week, using a program which is very fast and I can actually sit there and watch the disks defrag, when it comes to this folder, it takes forever. When I looked into the folder, I see threre sub-folders, each starting with _restore. One is 5Gb in size and has 8,879 files and 96 folders and says the date modified is 9-14-08 One is 4.89Gb in size with 20,364 fi…

No option to choose domain or "this computer" (no "log on to" field)when RDP (Remote Desktop) via Cisco VPN

No option to choose domain or "this computer" (no "log on to" field)when RDP (Remote Desktop) via Cisco VPN Hi, I have a setup in which users sometimes VPN to a network, and then RDP to a server. Several users log in ok to the terminal server, but for two users Remote Desktop does not show the field with the domain selection (Log on to), so they cannot be authenticated (VPN works ok - they connect without any issues). And of course when they log in from local LAN (not via VPN), everything is ok. Using domain\username or usern...@domain.com does not help. Adding various DNS suffixes to VPN connection properties does not help. This is a Cisco VPN, and RDP…

We've got a dell dimension xps_r, (intel se440bx mainboard). We shut down the computer from windows xp - shoft shut down. The computer is plugged into a surge protecter power strip which we also turn off at night. When we turn the power strip back on, the computer starts without pushing the "on" button. This had been happening for several months (since we upgraded to windows xp from windows 98). Now it has begun to print out an almost blank page from our hp laserjet 4L printer at boot as well. (The page has one letter, a "U" on it). Our virus program isn't finding any problems (avira antivir). I had alot of problems getting the printer to function…

Shared Document folder vs Document folder
by Guest Twayne- 4 replies

Crossposted to .general and .customize. Hi, Have a strange XP Pro SP2+ non-problem but an annoyance I'd like to ask about. In essence, Win Explorer is changing folder names. I know it'll do that with user accounts and depending on who's logged onto what account, but this is different and it recently caused a little more than simply annoyance in looking for a folder I not only knew existed, but even had the path for. It's hard to explain so I'll do it a few different ways<g>. If that fails, I can put it up on a web site for the asking to show what I mean. Emphasis added by me: In windows Exporer, the TITLE bar shows the file path a: C:\…

x64 Process using x32 Dll

Hi, I have a requirement to allow a 64bit application running under Server 2003 R2 x64 to call a 32 bit dll. (The dll is from a third party so I'm stuck with 32 bit). FRom what I've managed to find the way to do this is by adding a COM wrapper around the 32 bit dll. Is this the best/only way to achieve this? Any pointers to documentation for Server 2003 that describes this would also help. --------- Regards Jackson
