linkd questions
by Guest phavel- 6 replies

Hi, I am looking to use linkd to solve a copying issue. Is there any way to get an overall view of all the links that have been created on a system, and likewise is there any way to remove a link once it has been created (other than destroying the source directory). I know there are ways around the latter, just wondering if there about what options I have with this. Thanks.

Device = Unknown in Device Manager
by Guest Vernon CThomas- 2 replies

In Device Manager, I have an entry that is under category Unknown. The detail is "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller". I have no idea what this is about but I recently installed a HP All-In-One printer and it ended up with the same "Unknown" type entry. It didn't work at all and I'm still unable to install it. This doesn't seem to be an HP issue. Thought / Comments?

csrss process -- I/O Reads getting extremely large
by Guest matthewtec- 3 replies
On a couple of computers I've checked, the csrss.exe process in the task manager sits at around 10,000,000 "I/O Read Bytes". I checked this out because I happened to notice on my laptop that it grows continually and within a few hours will even get up near 1.5-2Gb [1,700,000,000]. I've run a virus checker and did a full scan. Nothing changed. I am hoping someone can help me with letting me know some things to check -- perhaps I changed some settings one day and didn't realize the consequences until later. I just don't know. I also don't know if this is 'bad', but it just seems odd. Any help whatsoever that anyone can provide would be just great…

Wins server install ??
by Guest steve- 3 replies
I have a small network of about 15 computers. One AD. 2003 server. The dhcp is done by the router, if that matters. The server is set up to do dns. I have installed the wins role to help in network conectivity. Once its installed, which seems like a prety simple process. Is there anything else I need to do. Is it like DNS where you basically install it and your done. I have looked at it and it seems to be showing the servers ip address but when i look at Active Registrations and Replication partners I dont see anything listed. Is it working ?? Will it only work if I put the wins server name in each one of the computer network settings?? Thanks.

User Rights in TS
by Guest powlaz- 7 replies

We have an application or two that we run where the manufacturers recommends that any user be logged in as an administrator on the local PC. Being the good little lambs that we are we have always followed this rule. Anyway now that we are set up with a Terminal Server I am seeing, more than ever, why the need for each user to have local admin rights is such a concern. It looks to me like every user of the TS needs to be added to the local Remote Desktop Users group on the TS. In addition it seems I will need to make these users members of the Administrators group which unfortunately provides Admin rights to the Domain as well as the local PC. We do…

Checkdisk on Production system - fixing issues without unmountingdrives
by Guest requeth@gmail.com- 0 replies

I have a prod system with several tera of SAN disk attached. The filesystem was acting up and the drive has critical issues now on about 30% of the data, and we need to run a checkdisk to repair the issue. The downside is that it'll take over 3 days of downtime to run checkdisk due to the size of data, and the fact that checkdisk requires that we unmount the drives so users are all ofline for that time. Since there's no 3 day weekends coming up soon does anyone have an idea to fix the drives without unmounting them?

Browsing stopped
by Guest ms- 2 replies

W2K/SP4 Firefox, DUN I rarely install a freeware utility, so my machine is normally trouble- free. The only MS program I use is the OS, else is freeware. I do not believe this is a patch issue as I have run in a fairly unpatched situation on many machines for years with no issues, due to careful browsing. In a recent week, I had installed nothing, there was (AFAIK) no excitement at all on my hard drive. I shut down after cleaning, each evening. The next morning, went online, started browsing as usual, after an hour, it stopped browsing. DUN properties were normal, connection was normal, same Firefox version I've used for 6 months. I rebooted, norm…

Lost User Account
by Guest HRCJ- 1 reply

After upgrading from Windows 2000 pro to XP pro I found that all of the user accounts converted except Administrator. When I tried to add the account Administrator it said the account is already there but it's not listed on the log on screen. Is there a way to regain access to this account or will I need to reinstall with a clean install instead of upgrade?

Migrating from Per-Device to Per-User Licenses
by Guest Marla- 2 replies

We have an existing Terminal Server/TLS using Per-Device licenses. Some of these licenses are expiring soon. We have purchased new Terminal Server Per-User licenses and a second Terminal Server/TLS. We would like to install half of the licenses on each Terminal Server/TSL for disaster response purposes. Each Terminal Server/TLS is located in a DMZ, but we have opened communication between the two servers just to each other. I am proposing to apply half of the new Per-User licenses to the second Terminal Server. As my 15 Per-Device licenses expire, will those users be able to access the Per-User licenses on the other licensing server, even if th…

Can't use mouse or keyboard after uninstalling SP 3
by Guest johnbigbootie- 1 reply

After installing SP3 on a Dimension 5150 in xp home edition I receive a BSOD both when booting normally and when trying to access Safe Mode. The error is the following: STOP 0X0000007E (0x000001d, 0xf78de8ea, 0xf78de7f4, 0xf78de4f0) It was working great before the update. I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249 very useful to remove SP3 while in the Recovery Console. I can now boot to safe mode and boot normally but the mouse and keyboard do not work. I have only USB port - I do not have any serial ports. I get stuck in the screen that allows me to choose what user I want to sign-in as. Any suggestions so as my keyboard and/or mouse will work…

FSRM File Screens and IIS
by Guest Irwin Fletcher- 0 replies

I have a directory that has a file screen set up on it (via FSRM) that only allows file of type .zip. This directory is available via IIS to authenticated users. I have enabled write access to this directory in order to allow users to upload, change or delete files in this directory. The file screen works as it should when users try to upload files. However, where it seems to break is when users create a directory and then rename it. Users are allowed to create the directory, however when they try to rename it, they get blocked by FSRM. It does allow them to rename the directory if they name it something.zip. I tried to share out the directory as…

Yes...another memory question. No boot up on 8 gigs of stick.
by Guest hoovinc- 2 replies

Hello All, Not sure if this is an OS thing but here it goes. Newly built PC running Windows XP pro x64 edition. Srvc pack 2. With 4 sticks of memory (8 gb total)..pc won't boot up at all (no signal on monitors). It takes 4 to 5 shut downs and pc wil eventually boot up( But upon boot up, it will give me a blue screen error--but reboots itself and it will finally be good to go). So when the pc if finally running, it could run for hours without any problem. Even if I restart the pc ...it would boot up fine ( as long as it's been running fine). Lately, i've been running it with only 2 sticks of memory (4gb total)...and it boots up fine and dan…

SPN for sql server service

Hi all, I'm trying to set an spn for sql server service I'm in my DC machine and execute: setspn -a MSSQLSvc\SQL_SRV:1433 MyDOMAIN\MyUser where SQL_SRV is the sql server machine in MyDomain. At first sight, all it's OK. I get an "updated object" return message. But then If I execute: setspn -l SQL_SRV the sql service, doesn't appear. Also, If I see MyUser properties in AD delegation tab, and try to select the service, it doesn't appear. Another extrange think it's that, I've created MyUser, totally new, it means that delegation tab in AD propertiers, doesn't appear (it's correct), then, I've executed the setspn, and then, delegation tab appears ¿? An…

Logon fails on first attempt
by Guest Dave- 4 replies

Hi Folks, I recently got a new laptop at work (A Lenovo x60). I installed WinXP Pro, and everything seemed to be OK for a while. However, after a few weeks, the laptop developed this quirk. If I lock the computer, and attempt to unlock the computer, the first time I attempt to enter my password, it is rejected. The second time, it works fine. (Very rarely it goes to three, but I think these might just be typos.) This happens almost all of the time. If the time between logout and login is very short (less than a minute) then the problem does not occur. If I put the machine in standby, or walk away for a few minutes, I will always have to enter my pas…

We are experiencing an issue in our Microsoft 2003 envirornment in when new users are created, we now need to run getsid, grant the user domain admin rights (Temporarily) log in to both of our terminal servers, and manually create the Windows Key within HKEY_USERS\<USER sid>\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. Any ideas of why this is happening and what registry permissions, if that is what it is related to, might need to be adjusted? -- Kenneth Clebak

Win XP PRO, very slow to shut down, why?
by Guest Sardine- 10 replies

My WIN XP PRO system runs fine except at shutdown when it takes 2 or 3 minutes to actually shut down after clicking the shut down icon. Nothing unusual was loaded when this started happening. A few weeks later I installed SP3 hoping it would fix things, it didn't. The hard drive LED stops flashing during most of this delay time. I also see some unusual static effect on the bottom of the video screen during this time. Looks like the screen was in transition and suddenly stops. Help JB

Software repair invoked by SP3
by Guest HPS Admin- 5 replies

I have a piece of software installed on PC's that is being corrupted by SP3. After successfully installing Service Pack 3 on to the PC you are requested to re-boot. During the re-boot the Windows Installer is invoked and our software is re-installed/repaired before the login screen appears. As the PC has no connection to our server when the software is installed, the installer corrupts the programs configuration files with invalid paths to files. I can correct the configuration files (text .ini files) after SP3 has done it's stuff but I would like to know what would cause the Windows Installer to be invoked in this way.
