I have a machine with Windows 98. When I open My Computer, I see all the drives correctly, but when I click on the C: drive, it tries to access a nonexistent setup.exe file instead of listing the files and directories on the C: drive. Is there a way to fix this? Properties did not really help much. I am thinking that it must be in the registry, but I am not sure. Z.K.

Is there a way to determine whether any application has been installed on PC within given time period even if program has not left traces of itself? Or whether some registry changes has been done within this time frame (as result of running the executable). (on win xp home).

XP SP2 Inserted CD in drive E. Select files from C:. Copy. Paste to E. Selected "Burn to CD". Inserted CD to CD-RW drive. The wizard says no CD is present. The CD is recordable. Am I missing a step?

Hi! All, I have Windows Server 2003 R2 installed on a 300 gb HDD which has been mirrored. The server has 2 partitions C Drive is 50gb and D drive is 250 gb. Now I am running out of disk space on theC drive and would like to use the partition magic to shrink D Drive and extend the C Drive. I would like to know if this is possible using partition magic. Hello, We want to test a new database application on our LAN using a Win2003 server. The idea is to simulate normal use, and then heavier-than-normal use and (if possible) to get a report of what happened during the to see if the machine can manage the load increase. Are there any tools on a Win 2003 server to get such an report? Are there any freeware tools, which allow such monitoring? Thanks in advance Roger T.

Gurus, If I disable the POSIX subsystem on my Windows Server 2003 computer, will I increase my system performance, even by a miniscule amount? I do not currently use nor do any applications that I have in my environment use the POSIX subsystem. -- Spin

I have a windows small business sever 2003 service pack 2 that is rebooting almost daily. It reboots around 5-6am almost every morning. There is no backups or scheduled tasks running at this time or user activity. The server would be at its least active time. The UPS logs show nothing strange but the problem has only been occuring the last month or so. Hoping someone has a bright idea on this one. The school has recently updated the computers in one of its suites with HP DC5800 SFF desktops (running XP SP3) with existing 15" Di-Fusion LCD monitors. In Control Panel -> Power Options -> Power Schemes, the 'Turn off monitor' option is set to 20 minutes. When the monitor has been switched off after that time and the mouse is moved or a key is pressed, the monitor displays the message "Attention. Input signal is out of range. Hello, I have a WinXP notebook running XP Home SP2. There is a folder of AVI files which causes me problems. When scanning/viewing these AVI files, I often get the following error message popup: Data Execution Prevention To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this application. These AVI files were encoded with DIVX (version 6.1). I have tried changing the swtich in BOOT.INI from /noexecute=OptIn to /noexecute=AlwaysOff This turns off DEP, but I still get exception errors. I have since left DEP on. What causes this problem with AVI files? What is the fix for this? Thanks Mike

Stuck with a random errror message and would appreciate any help/ advice. The error is as follows:- STOP 0x000000f4 (0x00000003,0x89b179e0,0x89b17b54,0x805d2970) I have an acer aspire 5101 laptop. The error occurs randomly and would not appear to be linked to any particular activity. Immediately after, it loads up fine and can work for a few days or as little as a few minutes before doing it again. Windows 2008 - is the 32 bit OS a fully supported and endorsed product or should I avoid it ? Hi, I have just been told that Windows 2008 is really only available as a 64bit product and not to use the 32bit version. Apparently MS have only produced the 32bit version for transition reasons and don't recommend using this version. I know this was the case with Exchange 2007, but am suprised to hear this about Windows Server 2008? There is the background for the desktop, which is set by right-clicking the desktop, selecting properties, and setting a wallpaper for the desktop. What determines the background/wallpaper that is there behind the login dialog box (like for example if one selects screen saver password-protected. Then, in that case, I have a background, and I don't know where it came from. I have a batch file that I want to run at bootup rather then startup. I know I can make it into a service but I dont want to go through all that. It is a simple one line batch file that just resets a drive that connects to my computer. I have it in in the startup folder now but it waits for me to login and then runs. Any way to get this to run when I fire up the PC?
