Migrate Creation Date only attribute
by Guest jimmy stelle- 0 replies

I have a problem. I migrated a large number of files and did not set the preserve timestamp setting in the utility I used and now, after a couple of weeks in production, we have an application problem. Is there a CLI utility where I can copy just the creation date from a source file to a destination file without changing any other atribute, or the data it self? We still have the source data intact. I know I can use Robocopy to copy the timestamp, but we want to preseve the new destination 'modify date', and only change the creation date. Thanks,

Can't connect to tunnelled remote desktop
by Guest Robert S- 3 replies

This might not be a "pure" windows question, but here goes . . . I'm trying to set up a tunneled connection to a remote XP Pro computer using openssh. The method is outlined here: http://www.blisstonia.com/eolson/notes/smboverssh.php (using port 3389 instead of 139). Essentially I've created a MS Loopback Adaptor with the addres 10.0.0.1 and I've tunnelled port 3389 to this (using the freeware program PuTTY). I then open Remote Desktop with the address 10.0.0.1. It works on several of my PCs with no problem, but one machine refuses to connect and gives the message "The client could not connect. You are already connected to the console of this compu…

I have an Win XP Pro user who uses network offline files. The files will not synchronize properly and I have setup and removed the offline files several times. When I checked her offline files it appears that the changed files are ENCRYPTED but I don't have offline files encryption turned on and I checked the files/offline files folder setup check mark for Encryption and the local group policy object and the global group policy object. Do you have an idea to help me?!? I am out of ideas and this is driving my user crazy. -- NC Beach Bum

Restoring computer not a good idea
by Guest lilime- 9 replies

Okay, so I have this old Compaq Presario that is (well WAS) still running Windows 98. I decided recently to try and sell it and since there was still files and what not on it I figured I would restore it using the QuickRestore cds. I have quite a few computers and I keep everything on them. Disks, manuals, paperwork...whatever. So it restores fine but then it wants the Product Key to Windows 98. I'm thinking no problem...go to get it AND it's MISSING! I have all my other product keys for the other computers but this one has somehow gone MIA! So now I'm stuck with a computer that won't get pass this 'product key' screen and I'm trying to see if there is any way, …

Duplicating Files

How would someone duplicate some or all of the contents of several folders, within those same folders all at once. What kind of program could I use for this, preferrably freeware? As an example, say I have three folders named 1, 2, and 3. Folder 1 contains files A, B and Z, folder 2 contains files C, D and Z, and folder 3 contains files E, F and Z: 1> A, B, Z 2> C, D, Z 3> E, F, Z How would you select all at once, the six files A through F, in the three folders 1 through 3, and end up with the following: 1> A, B, Copy of A, Copy of B, Z 2> C, D, Copy of C, Copy of D, Z 3> E, F, Copy of E, Copy of F, Z I'm looking for so…

Program processes are not closing when I close a program. When I try to launch the program again later, it will not launch until I kill the process that never closed. This is happening with: - Outlook 2007 - Word 2007 - Excel 2007 - Photoshop CS3 - InDesign CS3 - Yahoo Widget Engine Sometimes when I go back to kill a process for a program above, I find two and three instances of them running. I'm on XP SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

missing renamed network attached printer on print server
by Guest geekzmom- 1 reply

On a Windows Server 2003 print server i renamed a printer and it's share name. After i renamed the printer the name did not change and there was an error message that said "Printer not found on server, unable to connect” and there was no sign of the new printer name. On a XP machine i went to add a printer wizard and found the printer with the new name in the list of printers on our print server and was able to add it and print to it. What is really strange is that the new printer name or associated port does not show up in printer and faxes on our print server. I was able to delete the old printer with the error message on the print server and am still…

missing HAL.DLL - but that's not it - more issues pls help!
by Guest daviddschool- 24 replies

I have done the research to try and fix the missing hal.dll (google and have seen a lot of fixes). Here is the issue : when I boot, it stops before XP comes up and gives me the error that the hal.dll is corrupt or missing, please reboot. I have tried to reboot several times. 1) I put the hard drive on another computer, but it wouldn't read it properly (using an USB 2.0 external bay) 2) I have tried the windows recovery CD (booted with the XP CD) and did the bootcfg /rebuild but I get an error and it won't let me - and tells me I must do a chkdsk. So I am trying that, but it is taking forever (on an 80 gig drive). I am hoping this fixes the issue ,but I c…

BEST PRACTICES: Simple File Server

I'm not even sure what group to put this in so I'll start in general and if it belongs somewhere else, just say so! So I have this IBM x3650 here that's running Win2K8 Datacenter Edition. I need to make a very simple server out of it that has the following requirments, in order of priority. 1) Share files via NFS to a small group of Unix (Fedora Core 5) clients on a private subnet. 2) Be viable and accessible by Corporate IT as a Windows machine with standard shares. 3) All file level transactions (read/modify/write) must be logged and fully auditable. 4) Be able to be backed up via TSM or Backup Exec. This server has two network cards in it, …

download error

I am unable to download a specific file, http://www.logmein.com/logmein.msi. This is the install file for the LogMeIn remote control software. I am using IE7 and it gives me an error "data area passed to a system call is too small." it happens as soon as the download begins, so I never get the file. I know enough about programming to know what this means -its a win32 buffer error, but I dont know what to do about it. I am on xp pro sp2, just got the latest IE7, defragged harddrive. I am able to download much larger files from all kinds of web sites with no problems at all. Vendor's tech support staff has no idea what the problem is but seems convinced it is w…

Funny menu
by Guest Peter in New Zealand- 4 replies

I have a curious thing that happens from time to time with my start menu, and I cannot figure out what is causing it. Every so often, when I click on the Start button, the menu pops up, but is doubled. What I mean is, it's like it's there twice, one in the normal position, and an exact copy above it on the screen. Both appear equally "solid", and the shortcuts on both seem to work the same. I have checked the actual menus in Windows Explorer, and everything there is OK. If I reboot, or set the menu to "Classic" and then back to the XP style, it all comes right again. I've used XP for several years, and never seen anything like this. Everything works OK, th…

Fonts and icons too small in larger screen resolution
by Guest Paul- 6 replies
My wife has always preferred our desktop monitor's resolution to be set low, at 800 x 600. Getting her ready for a nice new 19-inch LCD (1440 x900), I decided to raise the old monitor's resolution (the highest it can support is something like 2000x1600). It put it at 1280x1024 and the icons and fonts on webpages look incredibly small. I went into the start menu properties and told it to use large icons; and the settings in the desktop properties--I change the font size to large. But as you can see, everything looks incredibly small. http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=resolutionvz4.jpg This monitor is an old Sony Trinitron, on its last legs. I…

Separator Pages
by Guest Kate- 0 replies

Thank you for your response. The users are part of a domain. I tried the following, but it did not resolve the issue. I deleted the printers from the computer. I made the user an administrator. I then reinstalled the printers. I tested the separator page, but it still displayed "Administrator", not the user's name. Do you know how I can fix this issue? Are the user part of a domain? If they entered the credentials for Administrator when making the printer connections, the jobs hit the server with the same security ID -- Alan Morris Windows Printing Team Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base here: http://support.microsoft.com/search/?a…
