Excluding certain files from Backup
by Guest AllenH- 5 replies

I run Windows One Care in Xp. Every month it reminds me to back-up, which I do, and the process is neat and fuss free. However, from time to time I might have something large like a movie file or large number of photos which I don't want backed up to my back-up DVD because the files are so large, and I usually make separate copies of these things anyway. Is there some way in which I can select the files I DON"T want backed up before I start the back-up process? Grateful for any advice.

startup problems

Recently my computer at start up has done one of the following: 1. continuously reboot before windows log in 2. stuck on windows xp load ribbon indefinitely 3. option of safe mode, last known good config, normal, all of which, upon choosing, causes the entire system to reboot again. Eventually after many many tries I can use my computer, but the sneaky thing likes to reboot automatically after updates in the middle of the night, which i then wake up to not being able to get into windows. I'm currently running several scans but nothing malicious seems to be found. Also, whenever I finally make it to windows, I get messages about my system recovering from a …

Windows Server 2003 Print Server Troubleshooting
by Guest DSI Admin- 4 replies

Greetings! I have an interesting problem I thought I would share to see if anyone has any suggestions. Please bear with me, I've been banging my head on this for a while. Our printing network consists of a Print Server setup on our SDC running Windows Server 2003, SP2 (don't yell, I didn't set it up and now I'm stuck with it until I can free up another server), different types of laser printers including Konica-Minolta, different models of HP and a couple of odd-ball models, and clients all running Windows XP Pro, mostly SP2, some SP3. A few weeks ago I had to replace a corrupt driver on the print server for the HP LaserJet 1022n, of which we have ab…

Problem with network transfers in Windows 2003 Server

Ok, i'll start off with my network topology. I have a Windows 2003 Server (SP3) running a 5TB RAID5. I have 1 Windows XP workstation, 1 Windows 2000 Workstation and one Ubuntu Linux workstation. Please note I did not have this problem when I was running XP Pro on the machine that is now running 2003 Server, so I have almost no reason to believe it is a hardware problem. I am running simple file sharing (This is a home network, I had to go to 2003 to handle GPT volumes unfortunately). I have administrative accounts on all 3 windows machines with administration permissions and the same password. The Issue: When I login to one of the workstations…

Stop Word raising open docs to forefront when opening new doc?
by Guest demurf- 2 replies

I have XP 2002 SP3 and I am running Word 2003 and IE 2007. When I open a new document in Word, Word raises all of the open documents to the top of my desktop, even if they are minimized. Also, when I open a new document from a website, if all of the open Word documents are minimized, Word will highlight an open document in my start pane and wait until I click on the highlighted document in the start menu to unminimize it before it opens the new document. Any idea on how to prevent both of these actions?

Dell E6500 XP Pro SP3. Just today, my existing VPN connections disappeared, and when I go to add new connection, the VPN option (and dialup option) are grayed out. I have read all the previous posts about enabling services, removing RasMan registry entries, etc all to no avail. It doesn't matter whether I do this with my ID (has admin rights) or administrator. Will not let me start Remote Access Connection Manager service - gives Error 5: Access is denied. Help!

Dell Recovery Disk specific XP version?
by Guest Hogweed- 16 replies

Hi – I’m trying to restore a laptop which has been comprehensively wrecked by a virus (yt8a.exe – look forward to it). It's a Dell, and isn’t supplied with an XP or recovery disk as such. Dell expect you to prepare your own recovery disk, using a utility on the laptop. Unfortunately, I can no longer boot XP, though I can see all the files on the disk when I attach it to another computer as a slave, using an adapter. There’s an i386 directory on the disk – can I make a basic XP CD to restore her laptop just using that? I know from experience that I can't just use any old XP CD from another computer with her license key – will using her i386 directory ins…

Windows updates won't install
by Guest Zach- 6 replies

For the past two or three weeks I've been having a problem with the online updates downloading to my computer but the installation fails everytime. In order to get any security or optional updates to install, I have to download them manually from the MS website and install from there by double-clicking the file. I've tried looking at the "troubleshooting" guides but they're next to worthless as not many deal with my particular problem. I've followed the directions of the two that did have possible solutions (i.e. change internet settings in Explorers security section) but it didn't pan out. Anyone have a clue what could be blocking the updates from i…

Volume Shadow Copy Service with NTBackup
by Guest Chris- 0 replies

Hi Community, Looking for a dumb down explanation of VSS with NTBackup by adding /SNAP:on switch. We use an application called Syspro, which if we were not a cheap organization can use a SQL server - however we are stuck with the ISAM data files for now. Currently we backup the data nightly, after hours using CA ArcServ tape backup. I want to implement a backup that works on weekends to Hard disk and a daily backup to hard disk. Now, since the data files are constantly changing through out the day it makes it difficult to backup the data until off-hours. Does VSS with ntbackup take a snapshot of the data (all the data) at one specific instan…

Error migrating printers using PrintBRM
by Guest Tim Crosby- 7 replies

I am using Vista's print management console to connect to a Windows Server 2003 print server to try and export the printers to a file. When I right-click the server and select "Export printers to a file", it starts the wizard and I tell it to save the file on the C: drive of the Vista machine. It starts exporting printers and printer drivers. It gets about 95% of the way through and says "Export complete: Windows encountered errors during the migration process. Open Event Viewer for more information". If I open event viewer, I see nothing but informational events showing the drivers being exported, no warnings or errors. But my backup file never gets …
