Problem Description: I recently purchased some new software and I need .net framework V2.0.50727 loaded on my computer in order to utilize the software. I currently have V1.1.4322 .net framework (think it loaded a long time ago to support MS Windows Messenger Live). I have installed the newer version of net and am then able to access the new software. However, it hoses up my MS Outlook (MS Office Sm Biz Edition 2003) meaning it will not open and it gives me an error message that says there is a problem with the Business Contacts Mgr - it goes through the diagnostics to fix it and then asks me if I want to open Outlook in Safe mode - when I select yes (o…

Why don't Microsoft allow us to downgrade our OS?
by Guest NotHappy_MSarePOO- 11 replies

Well its all in the title really. Why on earth do MS insist upon gining us the message telling us that we have a newer version of windows installed and then wont let us downgrage? I'm not a muppet, i know that XP is older than Vista, however it is better than vista. All i want to do is downgrade and it appears that you have to be a grade A boffin to get around this. Also to get real support from the money grabbing empire you have to pay £56, WHY? We had to pay lots for this OS, or pay hundreds more than a new PC is worth. Maybe Apple are better, I am thinking of getting a Mac, even though the very thought makes me want to cry. Why do Microsoft have to rui…

Number of files on Flash Media
by Guest kanlatss81- 2 replies

I just bought a digital picture frame and have a 2GB SD card to put pictures on. The frame will not recognize folders so I just dumped the pictures on the card. It would not allow more than 500 files. Is 500 the limit of files allowed? Also, is there a way around that maximum file number. I have also bought an 8GB Compact flash I was hoping to dump huge quantities of photo files on. Please advise. Thanks! SJS

Application errors when printing

I have a number of computers that have recently started getting application errors when trying to print. The computers are running Windows XP, SP2. When trying to print, they are getting either "Microsoft Application Error" or spoolsv.exe Application errors. At first I thought it had something to do with the print server but some people are getting these errors when printing to local printers. I cannot try the problem to a particular print queue on the print server as it is also happening to multiple print queues. In some instances, the print spooler will stop on the local computer and has to be restarted. Most errors are generating a 7031 or 7034 ev…

Windows Explorer Navigation Pane shows Desktop, Desktop, Desktop,
by Guest Mike M 91107- 1 reply

When using Windows Explorer and navigating from folder to folder, I regularly have the navigation pane change the name of the first level of folders to "Desktop". I then have between 5 and 20 folders named "Desktop" however when you select the one with the computer icon you get "My Computer", recycle bin shows up as "Desktop", My network places shows up as "Desktop", etc. The only way to get it to show the correct folder names is to close the Explorer window and open a new one. Until it gets screwed up. I have seen this since the original Windows XP Pro came out and it is still here in Windows XP Pro SP3. Any ideas?

Modify CIW logon screen
by Guest Harold- 0 replies

I have a completely private network where we perform PXE based installation. After thousands of times of entering usernames and passwords to get to the OS choices, fingers become numb. I know that it is not best practice to remove the logon screens, but how do I do this? is it possible? I have read through the material at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739932.aspx around designing custom RIS experiences, but it recommends not to remove the logon screen, presumably for security purposes which, again, are not a concern here. Any help is appreciated. Harold

Can't Uninstall Workstation Programs After Server Crash
by Guest JBradshaw- 2 replies

We have a small office with 5 users. Single-server environment running SBS. One of the principals of the company left, taking the server with him. It was rather abrupt, but the users are now getting by without a file server or domain controller. However, we are experiencing some problems when they try to install or uninstall software on their worksations. During the uninstall of, for instance, Adobe, they are told that the setup program can not locate \\oldservername. I have tried running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, but even it won't install, saying it can't find \\oldservername. The users are still logging in to the domain using cach…

I recently had my Desk Top PC's Mother Bd. Burn up. I'm looking at a whole new system but I do not want to purchase a new operating system. The suppliers are telling me I'll have to purchase the full version of XP or Vista (yuck) because the new interfaces within the PC for the periphiles are not supported by Win 98. I have the Upgrade version of XP and had no problem converting my old PC from Win 98 to XP but how would I do this with a New PC that does not use the old ribbon cables to the Hard drive and CD reader?? I have to first load Win 98 the upgrade to XP?

A question about using Low Level I/O API to read/write binary file
by Guest Bill David- 1 reply
I use Low Level I/O API (_open) to create a binary file. Then I use _chsize to set the size of this file (a big size). And then I _open this file for reading (get fd1), and _open it for writing (get fd2) and _write something to it. After that, I _read something from the beginning with fd1, but find: 1.I have written 65535 bytes to the file; (with fd1) 2.But I can only read 126 bytes out with the 3rd parameter as 1024. (with fd2) Is it possible? How to avoid it? Note: 1.Everything should have been done in a single thread. 2.I am writing an extension for another product, I must use fd instead of FILE* that's why I use Low Level I/O API instead of buffered FIL…

We have several Excel spreadsheets that are shared between six workstations. This week alone, we have been kicked out of one specific spreadsheet 5 or 6 times and have to "save as..." and rename the workbook. The error message that we are receiving indicates that we have committed a "sharing violation". Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, is there a solution? Out IT guy says that we shouldn't share. If so...why does Excel have a sharing option? -- Tom

I have a piece of software that is locked to one computer by a serial number, an activation code and what the software company calls a system ID number The format of this ID number is as follows: 09369D 30A3E8 ( my current SID according to the company) or 402919 226F85 (The SID the company says the software is locked to) What is this ID number? 1. HDD volume number? 2. HDD serial number(Factory number)? 3. Or what else could it be? Is it possible to change the newest ID number back to the old one? The only thing that has happened is that I had to re-format my hard drive and re-install the OS. (Media Center XP 2005) and XP SP3 I really quick solution…

Urgent: Need to rename Robert account to Administrator
by Guest Ronaldo- 4 replies
You can't use the same name on two accounts... the built-in default-Administrator account is created when you install the system. If you want to use it, just log off or restart and at the logon screen, hit ctrl+alt+delete simultaneously two or three times to bring up the logon box, then type in Administrator and since you don't remember the Administrator account, it probably doesn't have a password, so just Accept or hit Enter afer typing Administrator. ----------------------------------------- "Cirene" <cirene@nowhere.com> escribió en el mensaje news:%23LbysXIFJHA.1272@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >I just reinstalled XP. Problem of Jumping Letters !
by Guest Hari Hari Mau- 9 replies

Hi all ! The other day I was using my friend's notebook to type a letter, and I found something really weird. I am sharing it here with all in the hope that someone may have seen this problem before and perhaps can help diagnose what's wrong. The laptop was a Dell, quite new too, with duo core or something. I opened up the Microsoft Word and start typing. It went okay for 5 minutes or so and then the letters started jumping ! I mean, the words like scrolled up, and then down, and then sideways or whatever. I thought something was wrong with the Microsoft Word on his machine, so I quickly saved whatever I've typed, closed down Microsoft Word, and power u…

Reducing Priority of Scheduled Tasks via Start?
by Guest metremeter@yahoo.co.uk- 2 replies

Hi, I have certain scheduled tasks running on my work machine. They often hog the processor causing my machine to become unresponsive to the point of almost locking up. I'd like to run them at lower priority using the start command (either "start /belownormal" or "start /low"), but this doesn't seem to work. Typing this at the command line:- start /belownormal Y:\Vim\vim62\gvim.exe seems to run it fine, but if I put the same thing in the "run" line of a scheduled task's properties window, it says "could not start" in Scheduled Tasks' status column. Any thoughts? Thanks, - MM
