Persistent image of a lock on my screen
by Guest psychdoc- 5 replies

In the center of my screen, there is an image of a box - with a lock inside it. For approximately 15 seconds, the lock remains shut. Then, without my doing anything, the lock closes and remains so for the same amount of time. The cycle goes on and on. There are no messages accompanying the image. Attempting to put the cursor on it are fruitless. I ran virus scan - which turned up nothing - although after having done so, the images were no longer present. They have, however, returned. Rebooting does not make a difference. Control Alt Delete yields nothing. I have shut down Zone Alarm but the images persist. The images don't seem to have any functi…

Offline files synchronization fails for 4 files, "access denied"
by Guest mct@pioneerprogramming.com- 22 replies

I have a client who took her XP Pro laptop home over the weekend and made changes to 4 files which are in her My Documents folder. Her folder is on \\server\home$\username\My Documents. \\server\home$ is the share, with Everyone having full control of the share. Her My Documents is being redirected via group policy with Basic redirection to that folder. The folder was automatically created by the policy the first time she logged in, and the files were moved automatically to that folder with no problems. It has worked well for over a month. When she connects to the network, the warning appears in the system tray saying offline changes need to be synch…

Language bar malfunction
by Guest Ruth- 0 replies
I use Word 2003 with XPPro, and use the language bar all the time. On Sept. 8 or so, we started having problems: 1) Does not load and has to be repopulated with my frequently used keyboards every time I start the computer; 2) will only register the Unicode Keyboards that come with windows XP; I have 2 alternative Hebrew keyboards and one alternative Greek Keyboard installed. Regional and Language options lets me select all of these, but when I apply and close the dialogue box, they do not appear on the language bar. Between Sept 1 and Sept 8, automatic updates added a slew of updates, including Service Pack 3; on Sept 1 we installed Kodak EasyShare …

We have a recent issues where the users Home drive, mapped via their profile for Home drive is only mapping to the share level ie \\server\home\ and no \\server\home\%username%. This is a very recently problem and appears to be only occuring on XP desktops. Doesn't seem to be an issue on terminal server profiles. All this as worked for 3 year before this problem started occuring. Could this be a client side patch?

Server 2003 File Rights
by Guest Mike- 3 replies
Hello everyone, I have a question regarding file rights. According to what I've read and understand when a folder is copied from one location to another it will inherit the rights from the new parent folder, however if a folder is moved to a new location it will retain the old rights that it had previous to the move. At this point we have to access the share and force the inheritance to make the folder have the correct rights. This link explains what I'm seeing... http://www.lockergnome.com/it/2005/06/10/exam-70-290-copyingmoving-folders-files/ We would like the inherited rights to apply regardless of whether the folder is copied or moved. Is this a …

Home Folder
by Guest Jasper Recto- 4 replies

Our users each have a their own Home folder. When they log into the domain, it automatically connects them to it based on their user profile information. However, sometimes when they log in, it does not connect to their individual folder but to the parent folder. For example, a users home folder is set to this: Z: drive --> \\Fileserver\Users\JohnDoe. The Users folder is the shared folder in this case. When they log in, their Z: drive should be linked to that location. However sometimes it does not map directly to the JohnDoe folder, it maps to the Users folder where they see all the users folders listed in there. Why does it do this and…

Windows 2008 in TS role, no sound devices?
by Guest mat- 6 replies

I would like to test windows 2008 in it's terminal services role. In particular I would like to see how it does with sound playback and recording from remote workstations. I've installed it on an older pc and the built in audio chip is not recognized (asus K8N motherboard). If I buy a windows 2008 compatible soundcard, will I be able to proceed with my testing? Can anyone recommend a card? Seems like an obvoius question but I wanted to confirm.

Server 2003 - System process hogging CPU
by Guest ctech- 0 replies
We are using Windows Server 2003 and in the past couple of days the System process has been taking about 50% of the CPU. I am using a program called "Process Explorer" but can't nail down what is actually causing this. Prior the System process was only using about 5% of the CPU. There have been no addionational software or hardware changes recently. This is causing some network file sharing to be sluggish. Any help in pointing me in the right direction to try find the issue that is causing this would be appreciated.

Service Recovery Options
by Guest Bart Perrier- 2 replies

We are considering configuring the Recovery Options for a service in the event of a failure and for the Third Recovery Option, we have discussed launching a vbScript to send an email. Although the script to send the email is straight forward, I would like to make it generic enough to be able to apply it to any service without modifications. The pertinent information for the script would be Server Name Service Name Is there a value I can poll on the fly that will provide me with the Service which failed or some way to identify which service failed without hardcoding it in the script? (Hardcoding it is not an unreasonable option but, if I can grab it…

Help! Configuring iSCSI in Server 2008 Core is terrible...
by Guest Ed Swindelles- 0 replies

I am trying to configure a Server 2008 Datacenter Core server to mount an iSCSI volume. The server has multiple NIC's, one of which is on the iSCSI VLAN. The server is in a workgroup and will be a Hyper-V host. On a separate Win 08 box with a full installation and domain membership I can mount the iSCSI volume no problem with Storage Explorer by entering the target portal address and logging into the right IQN. In addition, from that '08 box (or another Vista box that I have) I can fully remotely manage the Server Core box through a combination of firewall rules and local accounts (cmdkey /add). So, I know my problems are not permissions related. Aga…

I have Vista on my computer and this morning it started downloading some updates. I didn't have time to wait for all the updates to be downloaded and I shut down my computer. Now I turned it on and is staying for more than an hour with the processing screen and the message: Configuring Updates, Do not turn off your computer. I am afraid it got stuck and I don't know what am I supposed to do. Any similar experiences out there ? Thanks.
