http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889320/en-us makes a reference to a hotfix which I have tried in vain to get from MS. I was wondering if anyone ever received it? I was wondering if anyone ever applied it? I was wondering if anyone could prove that it actually exists?

"Download complete": how do I learn from WHERE?
by Guest Kevin Killion- 3 replies
When WinXP finishes a download, the downloading dialog displays "Download Complete" and gives the name of the host from which the file was downloaded, e.g., "www.blahblah.com". THE QUESTION: Is there any log file maintained or other way to determine the exact address or URL from which the file was downloaded? (Why do I ask? I am using a "friendly" tool provided by a vendor in which I click on needed data files from a list presented as a Flash (!) item in a browser. It downloads only a single file at a time, it takes forever to get everything I need, and it's prone to human error as I spend hours in this zombie-like ritual. I want to automate thi…

We have our users configured in active directory with their home directories mapped to \\server\share\username using drive letter P:. We are using the proile tab of the users' properties. We use the Home folder section of the profile tab as follows: Connect P: to \\server\share\username We also have each users my documents redirected to the P:\My Documents. When the user browses to the \\server\share, they get access denied if they try to access another user's home folder, so we have confirmed the permissions are correct. We have found 2 users in the past few weeks whose My Documents have redirected to another user's My documents and they could …

Windows server 2003 printing problem - dialog box on console must beclicked to resume priting I have a Win 2003 Server Standard box that I am using as a print server. There are around 50 network printers that are connected to queues on this server. All our users connect to qhared queues on the server rather than directly to the printers via IP. The problem I am having is when there is some type of communication problem with certain printers. I get a call saying users can't print and when I remote in to the server everyting looks fine except that there are several jobs in the queue waiting. When I walk to the server room and log on to the machine directly, th…

I have been able to make regular backups via an external sata drive, but lately I've lost my access to the drive. the bios says it's there, but windows takes forever to boot when the drive is connected, not sure why, it usually doesn't take that long, I think one of the recent windows updates has messed up my sata drivers, has anybody else experienced this? Fortunetly the drive is also USB, it just takes loads longer to access the data.

I had a Missing/Corrupt Profile under Windows XP. I fixed the issue, but I would like to understand why this might occur so I can prevent it from occurring again. I checked the machine for virii, etc., (clean), performed a disk check (no issues), etc. I have been running XP for several years on various machines and this is the first time I had this issue. Question I have a 30 GB HDD (Seagate) in an Athlon XP 2200+ running WXP Pro with 1.25 GB of RAM. All is well with the system except yesterday when I got a notice saying that I was running out of disk space (I've only got 10.8 GB on the drive). I went to "My Computer" and the HDD shows up as being only 12.1 GB. I then right clicked the HDD icon and the properties graphically showed the same thing -- only 1.2 GB of space left! I checked Disk Management and graphically (on the lower pane) it shows the drive to be 27.95 GB, (which is more in line with a 30GB HDD). It shows the partition is NTFS and "Healthy" with no unallocated space. However, on the u…

I have XP laptops set to synchronize with a server running W2K Server. After sp3, files that were created offline, failed to synchronize when they were connected. When the laptop was connected and online, these offline files disappeared. When the laptop was disconnected, the offline files reappeared. This has nothing to do with permissions and the failure occurred as a consequence of the updated (as did other problems such a further updates failing) Any ideas? -- Mark

Setting Up Clients

I have started feeling my way through putting a Terminal Server in place for our company. In a previous post I was referred to a book Brian Madden made available on his website and I've read most everything in it. However there are a couple of questions I have left. 1. Is there a 'Best Practices' method for connecting a client to the Terminal Server? I went through the process of setting up a VPN connection using my SonicWall Pro2040 but I'm not sure if VPN and an RDC session are the generally accepted way of doing things. Aside from the extensive security configured on the VPN is there a need for additional security measures (regarding data bein…

Automating DCOM permissions

Hi, I am trying to automate the building od student machines for the classroom using GHOST. So far, everything is working well, however I need to set the DCOM security settings on each machine individually. I have a batch file that is running to do various things after the ghost build, so I need to know how to add this in to the mix. I have a couple of components that I need to add a user in to the "Launch and Activation Permissions" on the "Security" tab as well as altering the username / password on the "Identity" tab. How do I do this from a batch file / command line? Many thanks, Paul
