I need to re-format my C: drive and reinstall all the software, inclusing XP. Problem is I have a number of copies of XP Pro and I have no idea which one was used on this machine. Where on the drive does the product key get stored? Having identified the correct disc and having done the re-install, will I have to go through activation again?

Every time I start my computer I get an error window saying "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\proper.exe". Is This a real concern or should I ignore it. The funtionality of the computer does not seem compromised. However, I am no longer able to do a "system restore". Is this a result of the above error? -- normalnorm

Cannot install programs on win 2003 standard server

Just upgraded my server to 2003. All has gone well but I'm having trouble insstalling programs. Two examples are pcanyware (11.5) and AVG file server edition. AVG gets as far as asking what version you want installing, there is a pop up window that appears for about half a second (don't know what it says as there isn't time to read it) and then nothing happens. PCanywhere starts installation then rolls back saying that setup was interuppted. I've enabled active content from cds and tried turning off the web Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (first off completely then just off for the administrator group) but this just stopped ie bro…

Automatic Logon to Windows problem
by Guest baldy- 3 replies
Each time my PC starts now, I get an Automatic Logon To Windows screen appearing. In the user box it has the Administrator, & the password box is blank. It says that the computer is unable to log me on . I replace the Administrator user name with my user name and leave the password blank, and then I am able to logon. What I would like to do is for the PC to automatically log me on each time it starts, without having to go through the process I have mentioned. I have used userpasswords2 from the run command, and in the user accounts I have 3 accounts listed in the user tab. An administrator, ASPNET AND me. The box "users must enter a user name and p…

Reactivating Windows XP after a new hard drive install
by Guest BruceS- 3 replies

I was given a Dell Computer with a dead harddrive. I want to put in a used hard drive and reinstall the operating system (Windows XP home edition). I don't have the original CD for this computer, but I have one for my other computer (same operating system). I do have the product key sticker attached to this computer that I want to change the hard drive in. Should this be a problem in activating the software via phone if I don't have the original CD? Thanks, BruceS

initial startup screen
by Guest someone watching- 1 reply

Just installed W2K on and IBM X40 notebook PC. Every time it starts the is first a black and white screen with: Windows starting ... and under this a line of short vertical gray bars, these bars are filled in progressively from left to right THEN the regular W2k white splash startup screen appears. What causes that initial screen? Noticed on another system with XP, it does this same thing but only sometimes, on the X40 it's all the time. Thanks

There is confusion out there even by Chris Quirke which I aim to correct. Mozilla Firefox 2 is still supported by Windows 98. Mozilla Firefox 3 is not supported by Windows 98. Mozilla Firefox 2.x is scheduled for end of life at the end of the year as is paid AVG 7.5 version for Windows 98. I hope that clears the confusion in the hazy and smokey air and the blue azure sky and white fluffy clouds are clearly visible again from within Dreamland.

Recently one of my machines was hit by some malware called "Antivirus XP 2008" forcing me to remove it by doing such things as removing registry entries, disabling processes at startup, deleting most recent files in System32 and Temp, stopping Security Centre under services.msc etc. I finally removed it by running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in safe mode & running the full scan overnight. The next morning, I carried out the removal process of the discovered malware. Spybot SD was then able to run after this. I ran Spybot (definitions updated) and it discovered and removed some more malicious items. It now seems as if the malware has been removed except …

More control over standard font smoothing?
by Guest David Given- 4 replies

Does anyone know if there's any way of getting more control over the way TrueType fonts are rendered using the standard (non-ClearType) font smoother? The issue is this: I use several operating systems. I use a bunch of fonts that are designed for unhinted systems like Linux and OSX. My system is dual-headed, with different monitor orientations, so I can't use ClearType (besides, one monitor is a CRT). Unfortunately, with ClearType turned off, the fonts get drawn so badly that they make my eyes hurt. Here's what it looks like on XP: http://www.cowlark.com/~dg/screenshot.png Here's what it's supposed to look like (taken on Linux): http://www.cowlark.c…

Profiles

Hello, I have Windows 2003 domain with mixed clients like Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. We use roaming profiles and this network share is configured on a Windows 2003 Server. For example, when we create a user account in the profiles tab we specify [ \\FileServer\profiles\user] as the path. It works as expected with Windows 2000 and Windows XP clients. With Vista, it appears to be working but we have seen cases where Vista clients cannot load profiles from this network share. Please find my queries: 1. It appears Vista creates a profile automatically with .V2 extention. Is it recommended or required to manually create this folder …

I noticed that they get (via DHCP server) under DNS Suffix Search List mydomain.local twice ??? It's like DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : mydomain.local mydomain.local Also under Node Type there is Unknown? (instead of Hybrid) Where can these two settings be changed so that users will get correct settings? Regards,Miha

running XP Pro SP2 in place of a server machine.. pros/cons????

Hi all, I had a server hit with a power surge over the weekend, and it's dead... getting info for replacing it, but ...... I was wondering if I can just install the 2 programs it was running on an XP machine and run them from there. It would seem like it would work okay.. The unit I'm considering is a Dell Optiplex GX270, XP Pro SP2, 2.8ghz cpu, 768M RAM (I know it should be more, and could be easily enough)... 40G HD, One program would have to serve 22 clients only... the other program is used sporadically, perhaps 10 users at once... but is installed on all our computers... approx. 100 units. We have a simple WORKGROUP, so the server was really…

Quad or Dual Core CPUs??
by Guest Hank Arnold (MVP)- 8 replies

I will be ordering two new servers for a new/replacement farm. It will be running Windows 2003, PS 4.5, have50 concurrent licenses (our peak seems to be around 35 concurrent users). We will run Office 2003 (including Outlook), a database client (Misys HomeCare) and Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 (mostly legacy files). I'd appreciate opinions on whether it makes more sense to get 2 Quad core CPUs or Dual core CPUs.... -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services

Windows Installer & Windows XP SP3
by Guest RegB- 0 replies

I upgraded my sister's PC with a new motherboard, processor and hard drive (SATA). I was able to use Western Digital’s tools to transfer files from the old IDE to the new SATA. I ran into a slight snag and had to call & reactivate Windows (twice) after the new motherboard & drivers were installed. After Windows was happy, I applied all patches which included SP3. PROBLEM: Office and Adobe icons have converted to the default icon. When I try to use one of these applications, Windows Installer (version 3.1) pops up and tries to install. Any attempt to install or uninstall results in an error message saying "This patch package could not be open…
