Removing items from taskbar and start menu properties
by Guest edimerq- 1 reply

Forgive me if this question appears twice. I just don't think the first one went in. This is my question. Is there some way to remove no longer used notification items from the Taskbar and Start menu properties? I mean that place you find when you - Right click on the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop, (click Properties), (click Hide inactive icons), (click Customize) then look in (Past Items). In that place there is a antivirus 2009 folder, which is a virus I already removed from my computer, and that is the only thing I am not able to remove. I don't want to download any more softwares to remove it. I've already done that. I just want to know …

Find in W2K8 Enterprise changing to wingdings?
by Guest David B- 4 replies

I've been trying out Windows Server Enterprise 2008 and have to keep reinstalling. The desktop slowly sees the fonts change, over a period of a few weeks, from normal to wingdings, making it all unreadable. This has happened multiple times. Avast Server Antivirus does not find anything, nor do I see anything off in Hijack This. I'll attach a screenshot in my reply email, so that it is only by choice that you see the screen shot. This is the 64 bit version, by the way. On the same machine, 32 bit is happy as a clam. This one boggles my mind. David

Is there a hard drive file organizer that will ... 1 2
by Guest 98 Guy- 37 replies

Is there a hard drive file organizer, optimizer, "cleaner", that will a) identify multiple copies of the same file based on - same file name (but perhaps binary identical, perhaps not) - different name, but binary identical and either follow your rules (eg smart rename) or allow you to easily move them around or delete the duplicates b) identify, catalog or list the version numbers of multiple copies of the same system files (.exe, dll, etc) The goal is to use such software (instead of manual exploration and file cutting and pasting) to organize and aggregate the contents of possibly up to a few dozen hard drives. Most hard drive file o…

Hello All, Working on a very disturbed system this week, and after running every thing I could think of, I'm here. Back ground... Older Dell system, running XP Pro. Hasn't ran since Febuary when the network adapater quick working. After my first initial look at the system, someone put some cheap anti-virus program on the system and it quaranteened the svchost file... rpc won't load.. you know the rest. Well that was great, got a new svchost installed, but nothing was starting. All kinds of services were no longer listed in the registry. Fun for me. Loaded Ultimate boot cd for Windows, grabed an older version of the registry files, copied them into th…

by Guest Bill Ross- 2 replies

Hi, I'm a fellow fool who bought XP64 and regretted it ever since because of the endless compatibility issues. My latest nightmare... I bought a Creative Labs Audigy SE sound card which had an XP64 driver which installs fine in Safe Mode but will not run if not in Safe Mode. Currently, the card is listed in the device manager with a yellow exclamation point. I am assure that it is compatible but I have spent many hours doing the various clean boot, uninstall and reinstall activities that Creative Labs has suggested. Is there an explanation? Thanks, Bill Ross

(I posted this in the Office groups with no replies, you guys (ladies) are smart, so I thought I'd try here) Hi, My icons in the ribbon bars are fuzzy in Word 2007, Excel 2007, etc. My computer is perfect, Nvidia 8600gt card, latest drivers, etc. All my programs are perfect except Office 2007. Resolution is 1280 x 1024 on a Samsung 931BF 19" monitor. When I paste anything into a new Word document, all is fine, all the typefaces in the toolbar and in a document are perfect, it's just the icons in the ribbon and sub-menus. (Note: the typeface within a toolbar icon image are fuzzy, also). I do have full Acrobat installed and it's in my ribbon. I…

Can't play movies
by Guest Maggy- 1 reply
Hi folks, long story short. I left my laptop with a friend in the US after a two month visit. The laptop was formatted and installed (XP Home) here in Australia. I send over the odd movie for her to see. Being an NTSC country she can only watch the movies (PAL) on the laptop. As time has it, the laptop crashed and she had the system reinstalled there in the states. She cannot now play the PAL movies I sent her, probably because it now has an American configuration/software. I think she is using Media Player 9 or 10. What does she need to do to get Media player (installed in the US) to play PAL movies? does she need to change XP region to Australia? W…

I have Internet Explorer 6.0 installed for Windows XP SP2. Now I want to upgrade it to Internet Explorer 7. However, my computer didn't allow me to install IE7 directly, and didn't allow me to save the installation exe file as well. It showed an error message as well to show the file can't be saved. I download the installation file to a USB memory stick from another computer, and hopes it work. However, I can see the file in my computer with explorer, but it don't respond to the click. It just halts there. Any idea to solve my trouble? Thanks!

Customised keyboard short cut to activate batch file not working
by Guest redyellowgreenblue@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hi I've set-up a batch file to automatically hibernate my computer (the code is "RUNDLL32.EXE PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState"). I've then created a shortcut to this on the desktop, and assigned it the keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+H using the /Properties/Shortcut option. But it doesn't work. Actually, it worked once, but then never again. I've tried it with no other programs running, but no luck. Should customised keyboard short cuts work to activate batch files?

Reinstalling XP Home on Dell without original reinstall disc?
by Guest redyellowgreenblue@gmail.com- 5 replies
- 422 views
Hi I've got a Dell desktop that I want to reinstall Windows XP Home on (I'm on SP3 at the moment). I have no idea where my reinstall disc is. What I do have is the OEM code that's on Control Panel/System. I also have the stick which tells me the product key. These two codes are different - which I didn't expect. Can I just buy a cheap Windows XP Home disc off Ebay and then use my own codes?

unable to kill processes
by Guest yawnmoth- 5 replies

There's a process I'm trying to kill and am quite unable to do so. I go into the Task Manager, hit the End Process button, click 'Yes', and... nothing happens. I use the command line tools mentioned at <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457123.aspx>, and nothing happens. It says all the processes have been killed, but they still show up when I use tasklist. I download KILL from <http://www.petri.co.il/ download_free_reskit_tools.htm>, as recommended by <http:// support.microsoft.com/kb/155075>, and after five minutes of just sitting there, doing nothing, KILL crashes. Any ideas?

RE: ie 64

RE: ie 64 Drew, IE7 32-bit (the default one in Vista x64) has all the bells and whistles you are used to. IE7 64-bit looks more like a barebones, and faster one, because it lacks of flash animations, java and activex as they are all 32-bit. Some prefer IE7 64-bit, like Charlie, other IE7 32-bit. If you don't need the flashing gizmos, IE7 64-bit is all you need. Hide or unhide partitions in XP Pro disk copy

I want to use Drive Copy 5 to copy a 300GB hard drive to a 320GB new one. I have 2 partitions on the drive which XP expects to be I and L. The instructions suggest to hide the partitions so the OS will not make new drive letters. Is this a concern in XP since I see drives fom C to P with these two missing . TIA

WE have a SBS 2003 server (server1) which crashed due to a disk controller issue. Once fixed almost everything works fine. A few months ago we added a server 2003 (server2) whch runs an application. The two have worked fine together (until today). After controller problem is fixed, clinets cannot run the app. Message is that the computer cannot be found or no permissions to access it. Indeed if one tries Start -> Run \\192.168.16.3 (that address of server 2) from server 1 one gets the errors messages. However, if you substitute the name (server2) for the address everything works fine. Same story on any client computers as well. I've tried ru…

Can't start the Intel PDS service Error 1053
by Guest Tom Wall- 1 reply

I have a 2000 server that I installed the latest patches on over the weekend 10/26. I am now receiving a message that the Intel PDS service could not start. Here is the error it occurs when Windows tries to start it at boot and if I manual try to start it. "Could not start the Intel PDS service on Local Computer; Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." The service is set to automatically start. I have looked online for this specific error and only found two postings neither provided solutions.

Hello !! I'm trying to set the MTU value of a new PC -- dual boot, Linux & Windows -- and the lan card, the adsl modem, etc. Since I'm not so bright, I went online to check. The more I check, however, the more I got confused. On this page http://help.expedient.com/broadband/mtu_ping_test.shtml ( scrolling down to #5 where it ) says "Add 28 to that number (IP/ICMP headers) to get the optimal MTU setting" On this page, http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=157 however, ( scrolling down to TCPWindowSize ) it is telling me that "MSS is generally MTU - 40 (20 byte TCP and 20 byte IP headers)" ! Which one is correct? Just exactly how much do…
