Reboot-loop problem with D-Link DWA-542 n-protocol wireless-carddrivers
by Guest no_spam_paquette@uwo.ca- 11 replies

About four months ago I purchased a D-Link DWA-542 n-protocol wireless card for use with a legacy desktop whose motherboard I had just replaced with an identical “new” (sealed in original package) Intel D845GEBV2 replacement motherboard that I bought on eBay for a reasonable price. The motherboard works fine but I have had no end of difficulty with wireless card. Various problems, including the one that I am about to describe, led D- Link support to recommend that I exchange the originally purchased wireless card for an identical replacement which I did on July 22. With the latest D-Link driver available for that card at the time, this card worked well for ab…

Why doesn't pdf file association work in XP anymore?
by Guest Catt- 6 replies
Even though my file association settings are set for a .pdf file to open with Adobe Acrobat 8 , Windows XP will not do it. Why not? It always did in the past. What has changed? As I've seen in a few other posts after a search, it's seems it's another step to save the pdf to a file then open it. I tried a system restore to a time when I knew it used to but even that did not work. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks Catt

Undeleting / recovering a file
by Guest Peter Hucker- 7 replies
In DOS and Windows 3.1, if you deleted a file, you could just undelete it again, as long as you hadn't written to that portion of the disk. What has happened in Windows XP which prevents this? I was given a USB memory stick, the owner had deleted the wrong file, and wanted it back. I tried 6 different recovery utilities, one said the file was "overwritten", the others said "poor". The most they recovered was the heading of the word document (it was 7 pages of text). So I tried a test, I got my own USB stick, copied a couple of images and a word document to it, then deleted them. Then I immediately tried to recover the three files. None of the 6 utilities got an…

70 yr old needs help - reactivating XP
by Guest Anthont- 13 replies

Wife and I are going to the States for 50th wedding aniversary. We are going to drive from Los Angeles to Washington. We intend to take a old IBM laptop and use it to download videos onto. Trouble was that it was rather full of programs which, although I deleted as many as I could, did not give enough space on the hard disk. The original XP operating system is held in a hidden sector on the hard disk but I didn't know how to get to it. What I wanted to do was to format the disk and then reinstall the OS. However I couldn't do it so I took it to the local "Guru" who done it for me. When I switched it on I was asked to "actviate" the software. When I wen…

Recovery Console crashes

XP Pro sp3. I installed RC as per instructions and on boot the option appeared. When I selected it, the RC gave messages that it was starting and then when the screen blanked, instead of the RC command screen, I got the blue failure screen. I uninstalled RC, removed the cmdcons folder and file and reinstalled. Same result. So then I used msconfig and went to BOOT.INI. That gave me a message that the path was no good, so removed the entry for me. Rebooting and reinstalling I went to RC and then got a message that hal.dll could not be found. After booting into XP again I found that the file was labelled HAL.DLL so I renamed it and tried again. That…

The recent comments regarding a 'chili recipe' reminded me of an interview I heard, years ago, of a college student credited with bottling the first gallon of jalapeno chili pepper wine. When asked what it tasted like, he replied: 'It's kinda like drinkin' electricity'! -- Semper Fi

w2k3 Enterprise Edition sp2 printing and snmp enabled
by Guest nick- 3 replies

After installing a new (print)server with Windows 2003 server (Enterprise Edition R2) with sp2 we observe the next problem. When sp2 is installed a number of printer queues got the status ‘offline’, and the printjobs are no longer processed. When however snmp on the standard tcp-ip port is gedisabled the print queue gets the status online again, and it works fine. The printjobs are printed again. I’ve searched through the knowledge base, but no real solution for this found. I also searched on the Internet but found no useful result for us, they all advice to disable snmp on the tcp-ip port. To disable snmp on tcp-ip ports on our infrastructure is no option…

hi, a friend of mine told me about a free mail service that's totally free of annoying spam. I've used it since June 1st and haven't received a single piece of spam. however, a mail with my girlfriend's pics (90mb) was once delayed for about 5h. Let's make a list of the purest *free *mail services - who uses what and for how long and what problems arise my choice is http://breakthru.com/go/g985144.subinvite 4 months I think the subject will be interesting :) -- JoZertekAdv

I THINK this started after updating one of my WinXP computers to SP3, but since it's not one I use online most of the time I can't be sure. I've lost the regular blue-e-in-a-gold-orbit IE icon from my Start menu. Now there's just a generic icon there. Anyone know how I can get the IE icon back? The IE version number is 7.0.5730.13.

Blank Screen after RDP Logon
by Guest jama- 1 reply
After logging in using RDP, I get a blank screen for a while and then disconnect. Once it looked like the desktop would load but only flashed on the screen for a fraction of a second. I think I saw it say something like "hm sync window error" but it was literally a flash on the screen. VNC and LogMeIn both work fine, but I would prefer to use the RDP client only. I have tried disabling the bitmap caching, different resolutions and color depth, removing VNC, tried MTU 1300 and 1500, tried different user accounts, and am out of ideas. Thanks for your help.

tweak TCP/IP stack
by Guest pcnerd- 18 replies

How do I tweak the TCP/IP stack in XP? I have DSL at about 2 Mb/sec. Eventually, I will upgrade to FIOS. I suppose that there is software that I can download & I know that there are Registry settings that I can change or add. Is there a wizard in XP (I have XP Pro.) that I can use to tweak the TCP/IP stack? Does TweakUI or Powertoys tweak the TCP/IP stack? So, in other words, what are my options? Thank you. David

When a user launches a RemoteAPP program, he gets an Open File - Security Warning. It says "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" HyperV Options
by Guest Geoff Schaller- 0 replies

I am after some general ideas here. We've set up a standard EBS environment with 3 boxes: management server, messaging and security server. Cool. Then we thought we would like a Terminal server and seeing that the management server box had 8GB of RAM, why not play around with virtualisation and put the TS in a VM rather than as a direct role on the management server. A few people think I am wasting my time so I am after some general opinion or experiences please on which option you might think is best: 1. Just put the TS role on the management server anyway. No HyperV. 2. Load the HyperV role onto the management server …

When I plug it into the headphone jack and try to test the mic it doesn't work. Is there anything that I can do to make it work? Thank you.
