On my home PC when I startup XP, right before the desktop loads and the icons populate my computer just sits there for over a minute on a blank desktop background. There is little to no HD activity while it's sitting there. I've found that if I press ESC while it's sitting there, it continues immediately and loads windows normally. I cannot even bring up the task mgr with Ctrl+Shift+ESC while it's hanging there. I have not noticed any unusual startup programs. Any idea what could be causing this or how I can troubleshoot it?

How to Use Folder Shortcuts to Jump to Specific Folders While Savi
by Guest Inobugs- 0 replies

I recently needed to reinstall my operating system. It was before and is now Windows XP. I have created folder shortcuts so that when I save I can "jump" to a folder deeper within my directory structure that I use often. I had several of these shortcuts and they worked splendidly. Now that I have reinstalled Windows XP, I can jump to the desired directories using the shortcuts while exploring, but when I try to do so while saving the folder shortcuts do not appear. How can I use folder shortcuts to "jump" to specific folders within my directory structure while saving? Thanks. Dan

Moving drive to new computer - file access
by Guest Ragnar Midtskogen- 6 replies

Hi, A friend of mine had a problem with his computer, Windows could not start. When visiting his house I tried repairing Windows by using the restore CD that came with PC, but got message that some files could not be found. Gave up and suggested my friend try to move HD to another PC with Win XP, as a secondary or a slave drive. He says he did and the drive was recognized OK. The original PC had several users, and now he say he can't see any of the files for the other users. Does anyone know any reason why this should happen? As far as I know, you should be able to see all the files when using Windows Explorer, but you can not edit any files belonging to …

DxDiag freezes PC .

I got an old PC from my wife's business, but the sound did not work. It just ticked about once per second. She said the sound worked fine when she had it. Then I recalled the only thing that I changed was the modem. I removed this modem (a Lucent winmodem) and hear music again. Now I had tried dxdiag before and answered 'no' to the questions did you hear a sound? out of curiosity I ran dxdiag again. Now it won't start up. I get a message DxDiag has detected that there may have been a problem accessing DirectSound the last time this program was used. And the PC seizes up: hard disk light goes out, mouse will not move, even ctrl-alt-del has no effect. It …

"Not Responding" for HOURS

My Excel 2007 spreadsheet has been "Not Responding" for HOURS. I can hear the hard drive spinning (at various speeds) but, on the PC, the green activity light (indicating that data is being written to or read from the hard drive) has been flashing very infrequently. I don't want to lose the changes I've made to my spreadsheet so how can I save my spreadsheet? What could be causing the "Not Responding" condition?

2003 server hangs after reboot
by Guest rs121- 3 replies

Hi All, We have a Windows 2003 server ( Model: HP Proliant DL385 ) running SQL Server 2000, in which we always experience issues. The issue is that Windows Server 2003 hangs after every reboot. Sometimes, it has also bluescreened and has created a memory dump. First time, when it bluescreened, the memory dump points to cpqteam.sys and the second time it pointed to afd.sys. On speaking to HP, they asked us to update the Proliant support pack and NCU, but that didn't helped for a longer period. The Server will come to normal after 8 successive reboots. The server also throws the event viewer with the following log such as Browser error, during hang. Model i…

I just set up my Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (Version 2003 SP2) on an Intel Core2 Quad 2.83GHz with 4 (3.93) GB RAM. My computer is continually telling me there are new updates. When try to install the new updates, once the update process is over I get this message: The following updates were not installed: Microsoft Corporation - Other Hardware - Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio So, a multi-part question: 1. Do I really need this update? 1a. If I haven't given enough info above, how do I find out if I really need it? 2. If I do need it, how do I get it to install? 3. If I don't need it... 3a. Windows not starting up completely, no start menu, no task manager
by Guest Jim 5coat- 2 replies

Had a virus attack and have cleaned it using McAfee including a full scan in DOS safe mode. No infected files are on the disk based on the scans. When I start the PC in “normal mode” the desktop displays but the start menu nor the task bar display. Even when I use the windows key. Right clicks on the desk top do not work. I normally do not have icons on my desktop so I do not know if other programs work. In the safe mode I have attempted to run windows explorer and the system says in can not find explorer.exe even though I can see it in the windows directory using the DOS dir command. I have attempted to do the sfc /scannow process but got …

Video is red
by Guest Rob- 12 replies

Windows XP Home with all service packs and updated. All videos play with a dull reddish image, regardless of player used (Windows MP, VLC, Media Player Classic). The preview in Windows Explorer is correctly coloured. Videos play fine on the same machine in a Linux installation, and also on an XP guest installation in VirtualBox hosted on the Linux. Video also was fine in the old main XP installation before reinstalling. I believe the fault has been there since reinstallation, but cannot be sure.
