Legacy Operating Systems

I hope I can make myself clear. I have about 25 icons on my desktop. The first several work fine when I double click on them. However they look to be super imposed with another desktop icon. When I double click the other icons nothing happens. When I right click it does not give me the option to open the icon. Thanks!!

Lately, when I attempt to go to a web link embedded in an email, Outlook Express locks up. When I use Task Manager to get out, OE closes and the computer locks up, requiring a restart. Going to a link by any other means causes no problem. Any ideas? Jeff Stanton

Using a program "Docuanalyzer" to process reports with it's command line syntax in a .bat file. "full path to analyzer.exe" "full path to report file" "full path to report model file" "full path and name of output file" I have dozens of these files executing using the Windows Task Scheduler in XP Pro and am now setting up a new machine with Windows Server 2003. PC had indicated viruses last week and tech came and cleaned it up. However, apparently there is no antivirus program installed. This week noticed appearance of Antivir08 which I thought was AV put on by tech but found out it is malware. Shortly thereafter PC cannot be booted other than safe mode because after Windows login PC immeidately reboots. I was able to get into Safe Mode and install Malawarebytes Anti-Malware (as suggested in another forum) which indicated it removed Antivir08 but the reboot problem persists. Any ideas how to solve this? Since safe mode is only option to start successfully, I cannot get to Windows updates or other installs as …

I've been running the pre release versions of Hyper-V. I have downloaded the RTM version and when I try to install it I get the error "The update does not apply to your system". Any ideas why? My system hasn't changed. I have now uninstalled my old copy of Hyper-V, but I'm still getting the error.

I don't know if I can get an answer to this, because every time I try to read any response to a question in this newsgroup I get an error on page message down in the status bar and nothing happens. If iI roll over the name of the responding post, the status bar says "javascript:void(0);" - is the whole page messed up?

Hello, Nuance (Scansoft) doesn't seem to support Omnipage 16 well. The initial install worked OK until six months ago. Since then I have failed to get one good OCR of a document. The program Omnipage 16 crashes in msvcr80 and msvcp80. I've tried putting the latest versions of those programs in the c:\windows\system32 directory, but that does not work

I have a Sony Vaio PCGFXA 47 notebook with WindowsXP sp3. The computer came with Recovery cds and not a WindowsXP cd. So there was no Recovery Console originally with my computer. Had to remove an extra AOL program, but the Add/Remove stalls and says that there was an error and had to close (says something about app conflict in info sent to Microsoft). I believe that the program I wanted to uninstall is the problem, but not sure. Then I went to RESTORE my computer state to a previous time that was good, but it goes through all the steps to restore only to state that it is unable to restore to any previous date. What is going on? How can I fix these issues?

When I have detail veiw selected, I go to View> Choose Details and select the details I want to be able to see, but no matter what I select (such as album title, artist, year, track number, etc) and click OK, it makes no difference. On the main folder at least the detail titles show up, but the details themselves don't, and for any subfolders, even the detail titles don't show up. All I'm able to see is Name, Type, Size and Date Modified. Thanks in advance for your help.

Some applications can't be started with its windows maximized, requiring a mouse click or keyboard shortcut (that is not always the same, since it changes with the language of the OS). Someone knows of a method, like a small portable freeware application, to create a command line that starts an application maximized? Try to start the Microsoft Computer Management Console maximized (compmgmt.msc). Thanks to everyone!

Franc, I would really appreciate an answer to this simple question regarding the difference between the M571 (which you have so comprehensively discussed on the M571 site) and the M572 which I have. The M571 site talks rather casually about using AMD K-2 processors up to 450 or 500MHz, even though the "stated" max CPU speed of the two MB's is 300MHz. Hi gang, I want to connect a Belkin 2xUSB port "card" to my PCChips M572 motherboard. The motherboard has a twin USB connector which has 2 rows of 9 pins, with one of the 18 pins missing. I have the manual, and the first two pins, facing back of computer, are marked 1 and 2. On the motherboard, /of course/, they're marked 2 and 1. But I don't think it matters, since I am pretty sure both rows are the same. The one "blank" pin is irrelevant, since it is where the S-Gnd connects, which I believe doesn't matter since 3 of the 4 configs in the Belkin manual do not even use that 5th pin. I've been told during Windows 98 days that it's good to run Scandisk and Defragmentation regularly to keep the computer spick and span. Does it still apply to these days of Windows XP and Vista? As a matter of fact I carry out these maintenance measures every week, but would like to know their relevance in the present day software environment. Thanks.
