Manually Removing Certain Registry Key Types
by Guest Scott- 5 replies

What are the possible consequences of manually removing the following type of registry key: hkey_local_machine \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings\zonemap\domains\ (website) If my understanding is correct, the values of this key will set the security/privacy settings of the IE browser for the specified website. For the case of malware, the malware would create this key and set the security level to "Trusted" for the website. It would then direct the browser to the website and run more malicious code from that site. Using REGEDIT, I looked to see how many keys I had of this type and found a huge amount. I estimate about 500. N…

Simple IIS 7 redirection for TS Web
by Guest BrianB- 1 reply

What obviously seemed like a simple task has turned into an issue. TS Web is installed and is functioning just fine. Since the default installation is a sub folder in the default web site, I am trying to do a redirect so users don't have to add the "/ts" when they type a url. I'd be much appreciated if anyone has any ideas why I can't this to work. thanks, Brian

I am doing reserch on this because people are asking to set this to all the servers in our domain. There were a number of Internet articles that state the default for this setting is 15 minutes. I also have seen other internet articles suggesting that you set this to 15 minutes. Do Windows servers, by default, have this already configured or are the articles suggesting the policy should be set to 15 mins?

Allowing users to see their own desktop and All Users desktop
by Guest Gregg Hill- 1 reply

Hello! I have a Win 2000 terminal server that I locked down a couple of years ago using the "Locking Down Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server Sessions" document. It is a member server in an SBS 2003 domain, with the GPO being on the SBS 2003 server and applied to a "Terminal Servers" OU that has only the TS in it. I had it set so that users could see only the All Users desktop and had their own Star Menu where they could have icons specific to particular users. Now I want them to be able to have their own desktop as well as the All Users desktop because some users want the ability to create shortcuts on the TS desktop to frequently used files that re…

Win Media Player slide show speed
by Guest wheat667- 2 replies

I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I tried this question in the WMP forum and got 0 replies. I'm using WMP11 to display a slide show of jpg files. I can get to the area where there is a play speed slider and buttons to change the presentation speed, but nothing I do has any effect. The slider arrow only appears when I click on the Slow, Normal, Fast buttons. I can then move the arrow but it doesn't stay where I put it and then it disappears. And the Slow, Normal, Fast buttons also have no effect on the slide display speed. The jpg's always display with about 4-5 seconds interval, no matter what I try. Also, if you don't click on S…

verbosestatus does nothing

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325376/en-us?spid=3198&sid=1191 If verbose logging is not enabled, you will still receive normal status messages such as "Applying your personal settings..." or "Applying computer settings..." when you start up, shut down, log on, or log off the computer. However, if verbose logging is enabled, you will receive additional information, such as "RPCSS is starting" or "Waiting for machine group policies to finish...." ------- I changed the registry as instructed but nothing changed. I still see nothing but "applying computer settings" (for hours at a time, meaning my server is completely dead in the water)

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2, with DSL connection. I have AVG antivirus free version 7.5, Comodo firewall, Spyware Blaster and Hive Cleanup. All of these have run well together and I have had no problems. Today I updated AVG which I do on a regular basis and it ran successfully however afterwards it said that there was another update so I ran it again but this time it failed. I tried running it several times with the same result. The last time it did somethig like this it gave me a missing bin file error code but this time all it says was connection with update server failed. It turned out that the the problem was on the AVG side and I didn't have to…

The original configuration was AMD Phenom9600, Asus M3A motherboard, Asus EN8500GT (Nvidia PCI-E), 4x1GB PC800 ram. Vista Enterprise x64 installed without any problems, sleep mode would cause a video lockup and there were intermittent video restarts. Changed the video card to an Asus EAH2600XT (ATI PCI-E) video problems were still the same. Changed the motherboard to an Asus M3N78-Pro, 4x2GB ram, Vista Enterprise x64 installed without any problems, with either video card the same video problems and sleep problems were present. Removed the video card to try the onboard video (Nvidia GF8300) all video and sleep problems were gone. Initial testing on the or…

Hiya, How do you run Terminal Services Configuration (tscc.msc) on XP? I've tried installing adminpak.exe from the Windows 2003 setup disks. tscc is not in adminpak. So I've tried copying the files from a 2003 computer to the XP box. Tho when I run tscc.msc from XP after copying it says "MMC could not create the snap-in." So whats the right way to run the console, eh? ChrisW

Windows 2008 in Existing Domain - Rqmts??
by Guest Diane- 9 replies

We are looking at putting in Exchange 2007 on a Windows Standard 2008 box. The existing environment is a Win2k domain with some Win2003 servers. We know the environment needs to be upgraded, however, I have had no luck finding the requirements for putting a 2008 box in an existing domain. Most information I found discusses deployment in a new 2008 domain. I have found the requirements for exchange in an existing domain. Can anyone point me to resources with information on 2008? I called MS pre-sales after much searching myself and all they could offer is they thought the domain had to be 2008. Can someone confirm if this is the case or, if it…

Copy the Recovery partition
by Guest Charles W- 5 replies

I have a Dell Dimension. The WinXP "Recovery Disk" for this computer is on the same disk as the working WinXP but at a different partition. If the Hard Disk crashes, I have no way to reinstall the WinXP back to a new Hard Disk. My question is Is there a way to copy the "Recovery Disk" from its partition to an external CD and make this CD bootable so that should anything happen to the existing Hard Disk, I can reinstall the WinXP from the CD back to a new Hard Disk? If possible, I would like to use whatever tools there are in the WinXP. I don't want to have to buy some fancy third party programs. Thanks in advance Charles.

I'm running Windows XP. Within the last week, every time I double-click on a JPG image file in Windows Explorer (or type its name on the command line), I get: Open File - Security Warning Do you want to open this file? ... [Open] [Cancel] [x] Always ask before opening this file While files from the Internet can be useful, this file type can potentially harm your computer.... I can un-check the "Always ask" box, and then it doesn't prompt me any more for that particular image, but it still prompts for other JPG images. Can anyone explain why I am suddenly getting this prompt? Could it be that recently I installed Firefox 3.0? How can I…
