FTP Problem
by Guest Olen R. Pearson- 2 replies

Hi, I am having a very odd problem with FTP. Basically, it won't work. The FTP client seems to connect but then issues an error and no files appear on the remote server. The last time I needed to use FTP was in February of this year, and it worked fine. Now, when I try it, it goes nowhere. I have tried several different FTP clients and accounts, all with the same outcome. It is not a firewall problem; I run only Win XP Pro firewall and have tried it with that disabled + anything else that even MIGHT effect connections. I have tried it in Safe Mode with no success which makes me think it is not a conflict with another app - though I don't believe I have …

I have a 2003 domain with about 20 computers (Xp and Server 2003). When I go into Windows Explore and drill down to the domain, only 4 computers are shown. Yet, when I search for any computer not shown by browsing, I find all the "missing" computers. Why is this ? What does explore use to find computers ? FYI--I can ping all computers by NB name. Thanks

Dell XPS Home - 300 G hard drive, 4 G RAM XP/SP3 Kaspersky Internet Suite 7.0- SpybotSearch & Destroy-Spyblaster- Windows Defender- All Windows Updates current: For about a month, when I shut down my pc, shut down seems to 'hang'. I get the normal shut down screen,"savings settings' windows is shutting down'etc." Then a second or two later, get a black screen, and then back to shutting down, etc. again. This time my pc does shut down. I cannot pinpoint anything I could have done to cause this. Only changes made during this timeframe is uninstalling previous version of S &D & installing latest version (V1.6.0.31) and installing any windows…

Is there a way to boot into safemode and change a password or create another account or anything similar to that?? I have a laptop that I have been given but I don't have the password to get into the account. I don't want to wipe it clean and reload another OS on here if I don't have 2 go thru all of that. I thought I was shown this a good while ago but when i try it i'm still getting a logon screen. Maybe it was another OS that this was done on, I can't remember. It's a Gateway SOLO 3500... and it's running Pro Ed. If it's NOT possible, would anyone know of any other way of getting past my lil problem here. THANX N ADVANCE. Wayne B.

Icons Became generic
by Guest PT- 3 replies

Somehow, I did something which has caused a few desktop shortcut icons to change from specific icons to a generic blank picture. The icons include two DVD drives E: and F:, a utility program Acronis, and a self created icon for a frequently used folder. I was able to restore the self-created icon without difficulty. But... I next tried fixing the DVD drive icons. But if I right click the Icon + Properties + Change Icon and select the appropriate icon, I get a message that (for example) "the name E: specified in the drive box is not valid." So what's the trick? -- PT

Third Harddrive Causing System Halting

On Sunday I plugged in a 3rd harddrive. I unplugged my CD drive and put this 3rd drive on the second IDE channel. The first one has my normal two drives. The drives are #1 = 40gig with 2 partitions. #2 = 30gig with 4 smaller partitions. When I plugged in this 3rd drive, a 40gig drive, I partitioned it as the entire drive, no partitions. I only plugged this drive in temporarily to backup my entire system, but left it plugged in for the last couple days to rearrange some files. The problem is that ever since I hooked up that 3rd harddrive, my computer was constantly falling asleep. If I copied or deleted a bunch of files, the computer would hang for as m…

I'm getting a "Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" error message. With the Windows Setup disk I tried running the repair console but when prompted to select which Windows installation to log onto I select the correct drive and I get the BSOD that says ...."Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer REGISTRY _ERROR". I'm stuck! I can't even get into SAFE MODE. Please Help! Thanks in advance.

When trying to open a file using the 'open with...' list (right-click on file, choose program to open with), nothing happens. I have had this problem only recently. The last time was with a *.txt file. I choose MS Word from the 'open with..' list, but the file won't open. MS Word documents (*.doc) will open by choosing any program in the list. Any idea why the text files won't open with Word using the open with list? Thanks

new pop-up on my computer
by Guest Molly in AL- 6 replies

Today I suddenly have a new "pop-up" appearing on my computer when I turn it on, and it keeps reappearing no matter how many times I cancel it. It's asking me for a login and password, and I have no idea where it came from or what it is. It says it will take me to a website 67.228.53.115 and also has the url eagle-card.com on the pop-up. If I try to just enter that url in my browser, it won't go there because a password, etc. is required. Yesterday I updated and ran Ad-Aware by Lavasoft for the first time in a long time. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. But I was already sick of the regular pop-ups that appear when I first boot up, n…

Slow behavior
by Guest BobJam- 9 replies

A little over a week ago, my XP (HE) began to visibly slow down. For example, on startup the desktop icons would have the generic look and then slowly refresh one by one. And another example, when opening a program, it firsts displays partially and then the whole window comes up. So, I started to troubleshoot. First, I loaded Task Manager in an effort to see if any processes or applications were taking an unusual amount of resources. Nothing that gave me a hint there. Next I disabled indexing for searches, 'cause I thought maybe that was slowing things down (though I had indexing on prior to this and it never slowed things down like I'm seeing in my examp…

Service Users and domain printer mapping
by Guest IshmaelDS- 0 replies

I have a machine that uses a Users running at the service level and am trying to map a printer shared off of a win98 computer that is part of our 2000 level domain. The machine that the service user is running on is not part of the domain. It is fairly heavily customized and seems to be having problems keeping the mapping. I can map the printer manually no problem but it doesn't seem to want to remember the password(even though we checked the box) and I can't access the keymgr so I can't set that to remember any passwords. Any Ideas?

Windows Installer Problem
by Guest bigjohn- 8 replies

I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3 on a Dell Dimension 4600 desktop computer. I have a downloaded update for Outlook that will not install. It keeps trying to install and fails every time. Also, when I try to uninstall a program, I get an error message that reads: “The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.” I am running in normal mode, not safe mode. Any suggestions as to how I can resolve this problem? -- Thanks, John

XP Pro OS would not load... it gets stuck at the splash screen (the blue bar keeps going for so long then it just reboots itself then the same thing over and over again). It wouldn't load into Safe Mode either. The hard drive light was on solid the whole time, not flashing. XP CD would not load so no further repair or adjustment can be done... the CD would start spinning but then stops, it wouldnt load. Any suggestions on repairing? Thank you!

Hello: Other than taking the steps below, is there anything else that needs to be done to allow for remote users to connect to Windows Server 2003 through Remote Desktop Connection in a "non-Terminal Services" environment? 1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click System. 2. Click the Remote tab, click to select the Allow users to connect remotely to your computer check box, and then click OK. Thanks!
