Using Windows Server Standard 2007 SP1. How can I PERMANENTLY map an FTP drive to a drive letter? I tried doing a Map Network Drive, but when I put ftp://ftp.myserver.com in the 'folder' it tells me that "Windows cannot access xxxxx". I am able to click on the "Connect to a web stie that you can use to store your documents and pictures." That will enable me to put in the ftp login info and see the files. BUT, I can't seem to map that connection to a drive letter. Can you help please???

I would think they would see shared printers that are configured on the TS plus any local (to their PC) printers that are dynamically created on the TS for use by that session (would not see other session printers). What is wrong with WinME? 1 2 3
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 57 replies

I have been running Win98SE since 1998. I have a WinME Cd. I tried it in a spare harddrive. I saw no problems with it, but I only played around with the OS. Never ran any real applications. I have considered upgrading to WinME many times. I strongly dislike Win2000, and XP. Not to mention that my computer is likely too slow to run XP. I am fully satisfied with Win98, so I see no reason to upgrade. However, I know that ME has better USB support and a few other improvements. Yet, I have had many people tell me to avoid WinME. They say it's buggy. What is really wrong with ME? Where are the bugs? Thanks

Rescue Disk
by Guest sweeneysmsm- 2 replies

I have installed Kaspersky Internet Security Suite on my Windows XP Pro - SP3 computer. The opportunity to make a rescue disk ala Bart's PE Software has been presented to me. Is there an advantage to doing this - ie. the startup disk is Virus protected or should I use Windows PE? According to Bart one advantage, and this does loom large, is that Windows is a command based system, whereas Bart's has a GUI. Anyone have any experience or advice to share? All input gratefully accepted. Mary

In Computer Management, Local Users & Groups, in the Profile TAB we can set: - User Profile Path - Home Folder Local Path Am wondering does anyone know how to use these? I copied my entire HARD DISK contents (via BartPE so I get full unlimited access) to a remote PC. I then fresh reinstalled Windows XP SP2 on my PC as well as creating a second partition for personal data files. Then I copied backed up "C:\Document and Settings\" entire folder from the remote PC to my second partition data drive. I have 3 user accounts to setup. I understand & know how to redirect My Documents folder (via right-click properties). But am interested in actually…

I've got new drives setup as raid 0 stripe and during XP Pro installation, it sees two different drives (C & D).. but calling both Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 ... so does this mean that windows setup DOES see this as one drive, or is there something unique I need to do in the setup so that windows only sees the raid configuration as the one drive? Each drive is SATA 500G.. Thx

%date% returns different values for login script.
by Guest TimParker- 6 replies

I have what I thought would be a simple project that is stumping me at the moment. I was asked to create a simple login/out file to log when a user signs in and out of a machine. I set up the script shown here: echo %COMPUTERNAME%, %USERNAME%, %date%, %TIME%, Login >> \ \mopssrv01\MISData\MOPS-LOGONS.csv Simple one line bat file that I put in as a Login Script through GP. I have another one for Logout with just the word change at the end to tell me what they were doing. This is the output that I get in my CSV. Note the first and last one has the MON as part of the date. I have looked around and must be totally blind as I dont' see where I can change …

Keyboard and mouse disabled in safe mode
by Guest petfit- 4 replies

I installed Registry Mechanic and ran the Compact Registry function but when it restarts it hangs. The advice is to restart in safe mode and double ckick are particular file in the application to trick it into thinking its run. This has worked once but now that I've tried to run the compact regisrty again I can't get to Safe mode as the keyboard is not active when I get to the Windows Startup menu. If I trick it to default to safe mode by crashing the Windoes load the keyboard is still not active at the Startup menu and the mouse is inactive if I get to Safe Mode. How can I get into Safe Mode and have an active keyboard and mouse ?

Related user profile problems at different client sites?
by Guest John Hupp- 0 replies

I got a call from one client today who can't open My Documents. Error: "This file or directory is corrupt and unreadable." Another client yesterday had a problem that started with a serial label printer not being detected. While troubleshooting that I tried to run a System Restore to Friday. That failed. I ran a Safe Mode System Restore to Thursday and that succeeded, but it created a new user profile tree!! If the user's original profile folder was Hanna and the computer's name was DELL, then the new profile folder was Hanna.DELL. (The same behavior you would get if you were doing a fresh reinstallion of Windows without reformatting.) The old pr…

SP3 - Hidden Icon
by Guest Thom Little- 8 replies

I have a .NET 2.0 C# application that uses System.Windows.Forms.NotifyIcon to place an Icon in the System Tray (Quick Launch). This application does not have a visible main window. The application runs correctly under Vista Ultimate SP1, Server 2003 SP2, and XP SP2. Under XP SP3 it runs correctly when the application is started manually. However, when the application is started from the Startup folder at boot time it initializes correctly but nothing appears in the System Tray. When I investigate with Task Manager I see that the process is sitting there running. Other applications (like BOINC) that are in the Startup folder do appear in the System Tray…

QUERY: export/migrate old PC user profile into new PC
by Guest Andrew Wan- 2 replies

I should've used the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard.. but it's too late now. I already copied my old PC entire harddrive and then wiped it clean. So am wondering is it possible to export/migrate these old PC user profiles into my new PC? I believe things like Outlook Express, MSN Messenger, and many other Microsoft programs uses GUIDs or security IDs... and the files are encrypted or cannot be opened unless it matches the user account's security ID.

I am running the MAP Solution Accelerator to baseline a number of Server 2003 machines in terms of running them as VM's using Hyper-V on Server 2008. There is a rather intrusive status window having a cancel button showing the status. It is not minimizable. It appears that if I hit the cancel button, the assessment and logging stops altogether. Is that true? Since I plan on running this assessment for several weeks, isn't there a way to run this as a service so it persists between logon/logoff and server reboot cycles?

Hi I'm buying a new machine soon which will have Vista Home Premium, 64 bit. One of my favourite programmes is Google Earth, and it's own website says it doesn't work with 64 bit systems (although some users seem to have found workarounds). Is it possible with Vista to tell some programmes to work in 32 bit mode? Or does anyone here already run GE on such a system? Thanks

boot.ini - Renaming
by Guest thricipio- 7 replies

I know this is a bit of an odd question... but... If I wanted to make an XP computer temporarily unusable by, say, *renaming* <boot.ini>, could I subsequently (in order to restore its usability) gain access to the renamed file by tapping on the (F8)-key during startup? Or, would I have to do something more involved... like booting from a CD or memory stick? Thanks, —Thri

Home folder issue in AD profile
by Guest steve grosz- 0 replies

Here's a weird issue, we're setting user home drives in ADUC as \\k2\home$\user.name For most people this is working fine, and shows up in XP as 'user.name on \k2\home$'. Now, I have one user who is having a issue. That location isn't getting mapped correctly. Their folder is there, but their computer just shows '\k2', no home$. We've removed the mapping from ADUC, and put it back in, let it confirm that the folder is there and tried again, same thing. Odd thing is, this seems to be happening on only 1 computer. If I use his profile info on another computer, it works fine! How can we fix this on his machine?
