Shortcuts, panes, grayed out
by Guest Belltent- 0 replies

Within the last day, my computer has booted with all my shortcuts grayed out on my desktop. This is also true for the panes of any windows that I open. Upon minimizing or closing these windows, my entire desktop, startup menu, basically everything becomes gray. It's responding slowly when this happens. My drivers are all up to date and I havn't installed anything recently that I think could make this happen. Help would be much appreciated.

WinXP Home SP3 CD burning error
by Guest Manuel S.- 0 replies

Hi: I'm running WinXP Home Ed, SP3. My pc has its own CD Burning software (Roxio) and works fine. But for simple tasks, like storing a file in a CD/CDRW I like using windows built in burning capabilities (Send to->CD). It also works fine, but I have noted that when I add files to a CD that already has some files, the newly added files are stored but burning wizard ends with an error: An error occurred when burning CD, delete files, store for later, or expulse CD?. However files are correctly stored... I can add more files to the cd and again the same error, but files are OK. So what's happening?

FF bug? Using FF to print the following URL ... http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc300143(printer).aspx to "Adobe PDF" printer results in only 1 page printed. There should be two or more pages. Internet Explorer successfully prints to "Adobe PDF" printer.

Flash Drive Files and SP3
by Guest hrvgds- 3 replies

I updated my computer with the SP3 update today, and I accidently forgot to remove my flashdrive, since I had to backup my computer on it. I noticed it was still in the computer by the time the cleanup had started, since I had many other things going on at that time. When I restarted my computer and went to open some files on my flashdrive, I noticed they were gone, deleted. I know for a fact that the files were on the flash drive before the cleanup. I could have dealt with one or two missing files, since that happens sometimes if a program isn't closed properly, or the wrong button is pushed. But I have at least ten missing files, along with things that h…

Roaming Profile and a Login Script
by Guest Francisco- 2 replies
Environment: Server: Windows 2003 Workstations: Windows XP SP2 I have roaming profiles setup, and all user accounts have a login script to xcopy files to their local machine. My issue is, I editted the login script to "REM" (without the quotes) the xcopy statement, but the xcopy still seems to try to xcopy these files locally. I'm assuming the issue is with the roaming profiles. Any ideas how to resolve this? I would like to stop the xcopy ... i even deleted the statement and it still tries to copy the files locally after a restart. Thanks in advance.

Yet another "No Sound" problem 2
by Guest Gray Brown- 2 replies

I’m sorry about taking so long to respond to Andrew E’s advice to me about my problem(Yet another “No Sound” problem on 8/8/2008), but there’s too much stuff at home & work distracting me. Uninstalling & reinstalling everything under ‘Sound, Video, and Game Controllers’ in the device manager gave the following results: Video & Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio & Video Capture Device, and Media Control Devices - these drivers disappeared and wouldn’t come back; Realtek AC’97 Audio driver - the device manager says that the driver is enabled but not functioning properly. Further probing into the AC’97 properties turned up the message that a WMD d…

by Guest Ms Simba- 3 replies

I have had problems with Windows XP Pro64 not being compatible with my software. So much so that my nephew installed a virtual system on my computer so I can run these programs using Win 98. I am thinking about buying a MP3 player as I want to listen to audiobooks that I have downloaded (music also). I know absolutely nothing about MP3 players. My questions is: am I going to have problems downloading audiobooks, music, and videos if I am running Windows XP Pro 64?

Anyone know why a Winxp laptop would take an extremely long time to copy large image files over a VPN network link? i.e. broadband connection, 5 meg file, 15 minutes? the same thing happens when connecting to a VPN network outlook.pst file for mail. It could take up to 25 minutes to send and receive mail in outlook 2007. Every other request takes normal time. Even after the Mfgr. (Dell) replaced the processor and memory.

Hello all, Just ran my virus sweep and also use spysweeper here. Avast found Win 32 : Zbot-ALY [trj] in two places it seems : C: System Volume Information\restore and C:\documents and setting\myname\desktop XPAinstall . There's more info. per those two places but I don't know how to hijack this-or whatever-to leave it all here. Just wondering if someone can lead me to a good source ( thats free) to help clean this stuff totally off my computer. As of now, I only had the option -per avast- to put it in the virus chest , should I leave them there , delete them or what ? Thanks if you can help !

start service with parameters on restart
by Guest exotericist- 22 replies

i'm charged with maintaining an application which has multiple listener services. the first service can be set to auto. subsequent services need to be passed a parameter to start. in 2003 i've used sc.exe to pass a parameter to a service on startup and this works fine. i could set it so that the services were started by the act of logging in. however, i'd like the services to come up automatically on restart without the need for user intervention, since that's what services are supposed to do. my question is, therefore, the one in the title: how can i start a service in windows server 2003 on machine restart and pass it a parameter? many tha…

I have an issue with file associations not being set for all users. I log in as local administrator and set Microsoft Document Imaging Veiwer to open ..tiff and .tif files. I check the box to always use this program to open this type of file. It works as it should for the local administrator. But when I log in as a different user that does not have admin privledges the file association does reflect the changes I made to use Microsoft Document Imaging viewer to open .tiff and .tif files. How can I set this so that all users on our computers will use the same program to open .tiff and .tif files? I feel like this is some sort of a permissions issue but I am …
