Permissions Question.
by Guest MJ- 0 replies

I have several directories under my web root. These directories are tied to virtual dirs. All is well and there are no issues, however when I delete files within a certain directory (not withstanding that it is a virtual dir), the virtual dir display in mmc show a stop sign. AND, the dir security settings show that USERS has FC, no one else. If I then change the perms on this particular dir to inherit and prop al the way down, the stop sign disappears and the appropriate groups have the correct perms in the dialog. As suggested, there is no harm and everything seems to be fine. My question is, why do the permissions disappear and only the local US…

Internet Explorer 7

I have downloaded Internet Explorer 7,but when I open it, I get a screen asking me for required settings, for me to choose either to keep my current default search provider, or to let me select from a list of other search providers. When I pick the first option, and click "save your settings", it immediately comes up with"settings were not able to be saved successfully". I tried reloading IE 7, but get the same thing. This means I do not have a home page. I can use IE 7 normally after this, but it's driving me nuts, so any ideas?

Need software to setup home network
by Guest letterman@invalid.com- 4 replies

I have a desktop computer with Win98 and a laptop with Win2000. I want to network them to share files. I dont need firewalls or anything fancy. Just want to share files over a wired connection to a Linksys switch. The switch recognises the computers, but I can not get either computer to access the files on the other. I have spend several days trying to do this manually and finally gave up. I have a fair knowledge of computers but I am not a computer geek nor do I want to be. There must be some software that will automate this whole process. Please provide a link to any software I can download. Preferable freeware. Thanks LM

How to restore some data created by NTBACKUP to W2008.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 1 reply
I know the backup utility in W2008 is not NTBACKUP. Anyway I connect a USB HD to W2008 that contains the W2003 backup - Disk Management sees it. I go into the W2008 backup utility, RECOVER/'Another server'/'Local drives'/ Then the 'Select backup location' screen appears but the Backup location drop-down box ONLY has the CD drive. This is strange as the description in the 'Select backup location' screen explicitly talks about "...an external disk attached to this server...". OK so if this new backup utility does not work for me can I install NTBACKUP to be used for recovery only? -- Regards Tom

Mysterious shutdown/reboot
by Guest SharedNews- 2 replies

I have a 2003 server sp2 that for the past 2 weeks has rebooted itself every thursday at about 2:15 pm. Nothing in event logs except the previous system shutdown was unexpected. This server is not facing internet and has Symantec NAV up to date, ran malicious spyware detector and rootkit revealer and nothing looks malicious. Is there a more detailed log that might help? My next step is going to be turn off the automatic reboot on failure to see if a BSOD pops up and to phyically watch it at the given time. We do have a UPS that has the replace battery light on- so I tried removing that also. Any other ideas welcome Carl

cdr drive not seen
by Guest whcampbell2- 5 replies

When I open My Computer or Windows Explorer, my CDR drive D: is not shown. It shows up in device manager as enabled and operating correctly. If a disk is put in, the drive will spin up and read, but no info is displayed. If a disk such as windows setup is inserted in the drive and the computer is restarted, it will boot the system from the cdr and it properly shows up on the display. How do I get windows to recognize the drive. I have downloaded a new driver from microsoft and installed it with no difference. the drive works properly in another computer. The drive also shows up in the BIOS. -- wcampbell2

Networking trouble with wireless adapter
by Guest DK1000- 2 replies

Hi, I'm trying to integrate a Windows 98SE unit into my network, using a Belkin USB Wireless G Network Adapter model # F5D7050. (looks like a thumb drive) I'm using a Netgear WGT624 V3 router (uses both B and G). I also have hooked into the router a desktop PC using Ethernet cable which I consider my "main" PC, and a laptop using wireless. Both run XP MCE 2005. The computer in question is a PC someone gave me, "home built", and has a 533 MHz Celeron processor. However, I also tried 2 other 98 SE machines also that I have lying around, but the current 533 Mhz one is the fastest and best tech advanced of the three, so I'll try to keep that one on my network. …

64bit Version of Vista......What are some reasons why I would want to install this?
by Guest Jeff Ingram- 3 replies

Hello, I'm trying to figure out why I might want to install the 64 bit version of Vista. What would it give me? Ok, I'd be able to access more than 4gig of RAM (which my motherboard doesn't support). Is it more solid and stable? Would it be faster than the 32bit version? And where would I get the 64bit version? Is it on the same DVD as my 32bit version of Vista? Could someone convince me why I should care about a 64bit operating system? Thanks, Jeff

CoStar Label Printer hook-up

Last fall I built a new computer using a Gigabyte S-Series GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, two DDR2 one GB 800 MHz memory chips, and a Western Digital 500 GB SATA hard drive. I installed Windows XP Pro and updated it to SP3. All works very well and I have no complaints at all....except that I can not connect my old CoStar XL Turbo Model No. 90344 label printer. This label printer's connection cable has a parallel and a serial connector at the computer end but this motherboard has no provisions for either of these connectors. What is the best approach to resolving this problem...new USB label printer...USB to serial converter...para…
