Password

I have a friend who I gave a Dell Laptop to and she changed her password and now has forgotten it...other than reformatting and putting on again her original XP disk, does she have any other way of getting to reset her password. She of course did not leave a hint as she was going to remember the phrase. Any ideas? I told her to sleep on it over night and a good change the phrase will come back to her. Am I overlooking something obvious. She has her original installation XP disk. Bob

I have a 2gb SD card which I put into a digital camera. I didn't realize the camera would only reference a 1gb card and it has reformatted it to 1gb. Now I can't get windows (XP SP3) to format it back to 2gb. Is there way to get my extra gig back?

Hi All, I am told on another forum that this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\AutoEndTasks=1 is suppose to end all tasks and log off all users on XP shutdown. I know it ends all tasks, but I was unaware that is also logged off all users. Can anyone verify this for me? Many thanks, -T

Corrupt WIA (WINDOWS IMAGE ACQUISITION)
by Guest Stockmoose16- 6 replies

Hello, I installed Windows XP PRO sp 2 on my computer a few months ago. During the install, the computer kept hanging on the WIA (windows Image Acquisition) drivers. I eventually skipped those files, hoping they wouldn't be too important. Unfortunately, I just purchased a digital camera that requires WIA to run properly To rectify the problem, I borrowed a friend's XP sp 2 disc, hoping it would be more reliable than my disc. I performed a repair install, but when the computer rebooted, WIA was still missing from the system. When I go into "services" and double-click on WIA, I get the message, "Unable to open service Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) for r…

Harddisk after power failure
by Guest Stu- 9 replies

I experienced some power interuptions at my home and now my main computer doesn't boot up (I'm using the laptop now). It gets to the piont where the Wondows Logo is on the screen with the moving bar under it. About 10 seconds into that, it shuts off and starts over. I disconected all the external hardware (printers, scanner, modem, etc.). Still nothing. I attempted to reload windows XPpro from the CD and it went through the start of the setup routine, loading files. If I press enter to set up XP, all it shows is a partition1 [unknown] of 131072 mb. ( I don't remember the size of my hard drive, but I know it's around 40gig). If I press enter, it wants me to…

Re: XP - multiple installations with same licence?

Re: XP - multiple installations with same licence? I was looking through my old postings and found this one. I may as well give an update. I never did install the second copy of XP. The video card was second hand, and the seller explained it was my problem -it worked OK under SP1. The $350 (second hand!) video capture card sat in its box waiting for new SP2 drivers. They never happened. Life moved on. I bought a USB video capture box. It works fine. I gave the capture card to a friend who uses Linux on the of-chance there are Linux drivers for it. It still leaved a bad taste in my mouth. That was a lot of money. "HeyBub" wrote: > Jam…

User questions?

Hi there, Has the behaviour of creating users when installing XP changed somewhere along the line? I mean *I think* when installing XP some time ago I used to setup without first creating a user - everything was under Administrator but the last few times when installing XP I was unable to proceed without first creating a user other than one called Administrator...or am I going mad? ;^) Secondly, and probably connected to the above I now have a selection of computers on my home network with various user names, Administrator, Admin, my own name etc. and it is getting more than a little confusing when I want to access a machine over the network having …

DNS settings
by Guest David C- 12 replies

The XP client machines seem to be slower accessing the internet via our 2003 server. I have the client TCP/IP settings to point to the AD server as the primary DNS IP address. When I go to access the internet, I get "Looking up www.Google.com" in lower left and there is a delay. The 2nd time I try with a different www address I get "Waiting for www.dell.com" (for example) and the page is very slow. I tested the DSL speed and all is fine with that, but it appears to be a DNS problem. Am I right? and how can I set client correctly? Thanks. p.s. I tried adding our outside (ISP) DNS as the secondary on my client and the initial internet was very fast.…

MP3 Players and Viruses
by Guest lindalbo- 9 replies

We have 2 MP3 players, an iRiver IFP 795, and a newly purchased Sansa Fuze. We use 2 different computers, both with Windows XP Pro, one has Norton Anti-virus, and one has BitDefender Anti-virus version 10. Neither one will give us an option to scan our MP3 players. After dealing with viruses and cleaning them up twice, we discovered that the viruses evidently were still lurking on the Sansa Fuze. After plugging it in again, I once again had the same viruses on my computer. We don't know what the source of the viruses was. But since the Fuze was still new enough, the store replaced it. Our question - since it seems that they are capable of becoming …

XP Display Issue With Access 2K
by Guest IC_Clearly- 8 replies

I am running Access 2K on an XP Pro machine. The background color for the switchboard startup screen and all forms/screens are white, not their regular colors. There are many versions of this applications running on at least 50 machines and we have never seen this problem. Further, all reports that display to the screen have a gray background -- not white. When printed to a printer they are okay. I checked the desktop property settings for Windows and they all seem normal. And, this computer is not having problems with any other programs. The only Office program on the machine is Access 2K. Any ideas? Thanks. -- IC

I have a couple of users that are receiving the following error message when they attempt to open an excel file on a personal network home share. The share resides on a Windows 2003 server which is to date with all service packs and updates. The client is Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates applied. I've checked out the following KB articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814112 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/214073 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313472 When I copied the folder that contains the files to another server and attempt to open open of the excel documents I do not receive the error. How long does it take you to boot XP?

Little survey here--and if you have fast times, please mention your mobo and processor. I get 22 seconds on a six-year old Intel PBZ with a P4 3.0, Raid 0. A networked, but stripped down XP (minimal services except for virus). I think that's good but I'm sure newer machines will beat it easily... interested to hear yours--no cheating! On my second internal HDD 'D:' I have 1 Folder (empty) that I can't Delete ~ "(folder) is not accessible. Access is denied." This folder (& file contents) was originally a straight drag & drop Copy using Windows Explorer. Also, I have five older Nero BackitUp files that I can't Delete ~ "Cannot delete (file name): Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." These 5 Nero files were Backed Up on the same morning, but other previous & subsequent Back Ups have not been a problem. How can I Delete these old Folders/Files?

Installing New Work Stations
by Guest mcp6453- 4 replies

I do computer support for a non-profit organization. They just had 10 new Pentium 4 computers donated. The machines have fresh installations of XP SP2. It takes a long time to install SP3 and the updates. Plus, there are several other applications that need to be installed on each computer. Hopefully I can save some time by building one machine and then imaging the drive to the others. (All software is properly licensed.) So, I will use this occasion to try to understand a perpetual problem that I have: Giving administrator rights to the local machine after the work station joins the domain of the Windows 2003 Server. I have tried a number of ways, an…

Offline files problem
by Guest Robert Ozone- 0 replies

I have a client which has been working fine for 3-4 years, w2k server SP4 and WXP SP3 shared user folder on server mapped to user and set to enable offline. They had to replace the laptop and now whenever she creates a file in the offline folder (only when offline) it (the new file) is unable to syncronize back to the server; says access denied for the creation of the file on the server. I have turned off and back on the offline settings and I have fooled with security a little to relax it but no good. I can't figure this out, I have read many simular frustrated users online with no answer. Does any body know how to solve this one? RobertO
