Can't stop USB mass storage device
by Guest simonc- 5 replies
I have a portable USB drive plugged in to the computer and I want to remove it. Despite having no applications open, when I go to the Safely Remove Hardware icon and select this drive a warning box comes up saying The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later. Can anyone suggest what background programmes might be using the USB drive and preventing it being stopped? I already tried exiting a spyware filter but it didn't help. Grateful for ideas.

Merging Partitons
by Guest ColTom2- 18 replies

Hi: I have a friend who has a Sony desktop running Windows Home XP SP2. He has 20GB of HD space on C:\ and 60GB on D:\ and his problem is C:\ is almost full and D:\ has practically nothing. I purchased Norton Partition Magic 8.05 in an effort to merge the D:\ drive with the C:\ drive, as this was the most recommended software. Has anyone used this to merge partitions successfully? What concerns me is that I read a posting about the prior version 8.01 with someone trying to merge partitions and they lost everything in the process. Any comments and/or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

memory card multi reader USB
by Guest toronado455- 6 replies

I have one of these multi card readers in a 3.5" bay and connected directly to the motherboard (ASUS P4PE) via internal USB header: http://www.opti-ups.com/UCR54IN1B.htm It shows up in Windows XP (SP2 Home) as four separate drives (F, G, H, I) even when there are no memory cards in the reader. If I insert a card into one of the four slots (SD slot) then the "drive" (H) mounts the "volume" that is the SD card. The problem is when I do a "safely remove", it removes ALL of the the "drives" and it will not see any cards that are inserted after that until the next reboot. This happens regardless of which method of "safely remove" I use - the single left click…

USB behavior in Windows XP / Admin rights
by Guest Sandy Wood- 5 replies

We've run across an issue with non-admin users on Windows XP and USB devices. We've found that when we plug in, say a USB camera, install the software as an admin and then have the non-admin user login, the device works fine. We're getting calls now from users that after they power down and backup, they are being asked to install the software again. I'm wondering if anyone is seeing this behavoir. I've seen some posts out there that may offer some clues. Once post mentioned that maybe the non-admin user rebooted and then plugged the USB device into another USB port where it would be required to have the software installed again. It is inferred that is …

Re: How to extend C drive on Windows 2003 Server You may find that there is not enough free space on a certain partition. For example, you want to enlarge C: drive, which usually is Windows system drive. EASEUS Partition Manager Personal lets you free enlarge or reduce a partition in Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server(Only Server Edition) without destroying data easily. Hi. I do not think that the old autoexec.bat concept work with Windows 2003 Server. So how do I now implement a command to execute automatically when the server is restarted, and without having to log into the server??? I have a need to always and automatically have the server run a "ROUTE ADD" statement from the commmand line. Thanks, Manny

Backups for Exchange 2007 on Windows 2003 SP2 server:
by Guest jprstokato- 1 reply

Backups for Exchange 2007 on Windows 2003 SP2 server: Both with Symantec and NTbackups, both the Volume Shadow Copy Service and MS Shadow Copy Provider stop after completing a 'successful' backup - without any errors recorded in the event logs. VSS previously ran continuously on the server (i.e. continued to run after a backup had finished). I take it the point youre making ins that VSS stops after a backup and then restarts.. It now stops after the backup finishes...and does not restart. Unless MS designed VSS to be restarted after each backup (i.e. daily), (which I suspect they didn't), I see this as a problem.. Previous versions are not currenlty used i…

Is a virus scanner/firewall really necessary?
by Guest Danger_Duck- 24 replies

Here's my perspective: I use the internet almost exclusively to: 1. Check e-mail 2. Check facebook 3. Read/post in newsgroups 4. Browse info in trusted sites (wsj.com, wikipedia) 5. Watch youtube videos. 6. Occasionally download files. I figure firefox and gmail both have filters and warnings about "fake" sites and spam/phishing e-mails (1), I've not heard of any facebook attacks (2), newsgroups are simply http requests (3), I only click on links whose url make sense(4), and never heard of virus/trojan/spyware on youtube(5). As for (6), this is one place where I see a vulnerability. But most of my downloads are things like Eclipse plug-ins or files …

ASR without full backup in XP
by Guest Tony- 6 replies
I want to create an ASR in case of problems when installing SP3. But it seems that ASR insists on copying pretty well the whole contents of my C drive. It certainly does all of "My Documents" and "Shared Documents", so I would need media capable of holding 50+ GB. This is fine if you have a tape drive or a spare HD installed, which I don't. But I already have full backups of my own data on DVD and USB drive. All I need from ASR is the system files. So, can I stop the ASR wizard backing up "My Documents" and "Shared Documents"? Or is there another way to be able to get the system working again if all goes wrong? What do other folks do? Personal d…

And then I get redirected to a window advising me to purchase "Antivirus XP 2008". Has anyone else received these messages? Is this a genuine Microsoft product? I have Nod32 Antivirus. And I had been using Spybot regularly which was working really well but it has suddenly stopped working. Can anyone help me to get rid of these messages?

Unable to execute some DOS Commands after XP Reinstall
by Guest Jim Grimes- 5 replies
After I did a clean re-install of XP, I found that I could no longer see any ICON for MS-DOS (I can still get to DOS thru the Run command); and the computer does not recognize some DOS commands (I can't format a floppy disk, for example). Can anyone point me in the right direction for an answer to this problem? As far as I can tell, the reinstall has shown no other problems. The missing Icon is not a huge problem, but I suspect its absence is related to the inability to run certain DOS command.
