pc is freezing when booting up after sp3 installed went in safe mode and removed it - ok then manually installed SP3 and same thing again pc is freezing up don't have norton installed any suggestions? thanks

hi all firstly,need to say that i am okay but not overly tech savvy. windows has crashed and won't even boot in safe mode. am gettiing a load of errors that all begin with: multi(0)disk(0(rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers think a trojan has skipped through windows defender and avg that i have loaded. will i have to reload windows to rectify the problem or is there another way around it? am assuming if i have to reload that all data will be lost??? thanks in advance, kylie x

hi all, i have a major problem, a few weeks ago i had to install windows xp again on my HD, i did something wrong en now i have 2 partitions (c: and d:) and on both partitions is windows installed,..i want to remove one of them, but then i have to make sure that the windows i remove must be the one that isn't in use at all,...my question is: how can i see what windows on which partition is running on my pc

A "friend" tried to help me reboot my Dell E310 with my OEM Windows XP Media disks. It seems to do the setup okay but when it comes to reinstalling the programs the screen says it can "take up to 30 minutes" and to not hit any keys. So he waited over an hour and the disk light had quit blinking, so he aborted. Only some of the programs reinstalled and all the old files were still there. Any idea how to fix this? I have all my data backed up and my disks available.

When I open my hotmail account, and I click on an e mail to open it, I get a box pop up widows installer, and "preparing to install" There is an option to cancel, which I do each time, and then my e mail will open. I only have to do this once each time I open hotmail, but it is very annoying, and i want to know how to get rid of it please.

Hi ! I have just reintalled my computer with XP Home Edition and SP2 + all updates and reinstalled all the programs and drivers that i need. Is it possible to make a bootable disk with this configuration ? Would save a lot of time........ Brgds Viking

I don't know how much background information you guys need, but my question is pretty simple, or so I believe... I installed Windows Server 2008 Standard with Hyper-V (the parent OS) and installed all drivers and updates... I then added the Hyper-V role and proceeded to install another instance of Server 2008 Standard (guest OS #1) and once that was up and running I installed the HYPER-V update which enabled all my virtual drivers to work (such as network adapters and so forth) and *THEN* I wanted to install a SECOND guest OS... But I'm getting some error about the optical drive already being in use (presumably by the first guest OS) so when I shut …

Dear Sir I understand, increasing the speed of the internet can be done by allocating a buffer on the internal memory for interupts that come from the modem or from the network card.Pls explain how it can be done ,is it efficiant? ( % improvement) how does it influence other applications? Do I need to backup the registry &system? I bought a few laptops from Dell and the all came with XP preinstalled. Dell don't supply an operating system disk anymore. They seem to believe that "Restore Points" and the like solve all potential problems. But what if my hard drive fails terminally and I need to reinstall the entire system on a new one? Is there any way of creating an operating system disk? Incidentally, I tried to backup the system with the "Automated System Recovery Wizard" so that I would have a system disk in case of failure that didn't require a new hard drive, but I can't get this to work. Hi, I have an IS guy copying a directory containing a load of stuff from my old laptop (Windows XP, 2 Gig mem) to my new one (probably windows XP, not sure how much mem but should be 2 Gig). He says he's got them both connected to our network and is just attempting to copy the folder over (I assume drag and drop.) He says it keeps crashing on .ocx and .inf files. So he renames the problem file to .old and redoes the entire copy until he hits another problem (I do have copies of certain CDs on my machine). I have Vista ultimate 64 installed finally and functional and rock solid. To do that I had to scrap a Nvidia 7600 GS for an ATI card. the ATI card is a discard from a friend and not as good as I would like. Are there any ideas for a AGP card that only uses one slot. All I lost going from xp pro 32 to Vista ultimate 64 were 2 scanners Nikon does not support a film scanner in 64 bit, and Microtek said the same thing. I have heard that M$ is promoting Silverlight as cross platform. Is it including Win 98 as a cross platform system?

Running Win98 (NOT SE). While reinstalling the Dial Up Networking and Server, I accidentally overwrote a newer file with an older one. (I said No instead of Yes.) Didn't catch the filename so it's gone. How can I find out and update that file? I tried "Windows Update" which worked last time I tried, even long after MS stopped supporting or updating Win98. Is there now no way to bring Win98 up to date (as of 2006 or whenever they stopped)? Harvey

Recently, I installed a new firewire hard drive (ide)enclosure. XP found the SDP2 for it, the drive and so forth. However, its found one thing that I cannot locate drivers for, and, I have no clue what it is. The errant unknown entry begins as "WDC_______HID" Yes, the hard drive is a Western Digital. The enclosure is USB2/firewire, am using firewire. I even went as far as doing a clean XP install. Same problem. Additionally, I select to not bother me about this hardware again. Next time I turn on the enclosure, same screen wanting to install the HID device. -- Dave

My laptop doesn't recognize my printer via the usb ports. I was trying to install a printer and i changed something about the ports in the device managger (i dont remember what) and after that I've been unable to use the usb port for printing purpose. but they still work for the other devices (scanner, external HD, etc). I uninstalled all the printers and try to reinstall my hp laserjet 1018 but at the end of the process it state " an error ocurred during the instalation of the device. The specified port is unknown".

I have been having an issue with a Terminal Server in a Small Business Server Standar Edition Environment. I have attached the Terminal Server as instructed to the Domain. First created the Server and then ran the connect computer via IE. It worked fine. Original problem was related to Terminal Server slow performance. We upgraded the Server from 4 GB of RAM to a hefty 12 GB of RAM. I know the limitation of the $ GB in a 32 bit environment but I figured that it would allow a better performance - since it never hurst to have plenty of RAM. Win XP Pro w/SP2. My taskbar always showed the applications that were running until a couple of days ago. Then it will no longer show the application that is running. BUT I can get to them by pressing Alt + Tab. This is much more difficult to use than just clicking on the Icon in the taskbar. I tried 7 times to restore my PC to a previous point but it failed on all 7 tries. Can anyone please tell me how to get the taskbar to show the programs that are running on the PC? I am a bit constricted on the number of servers that I can have and had to make certain sacrifices forcing me to run Terminal Services on a Windows 2008 Domain Controller. I realize that's not recommended practice, but it's better then running a DC on a heavily used SQL and Apps server. Hi Suddenly some websites are hardly readable, the font seems to be changed and I can only read it if I chose (very) lager characters or set zoom to 150%. Before this sudden change there was no problem. I can't thinks of any changes I made to the system in between, though there might have been a windows crash. The wiki site is one of the sites with this problem (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoofdpagina). Using Firefox3 on the same computer shows the same site in perfect condition.
