Legacy Operating Systems

I have a desktop running xp pro and NTFS file system and a laptop running XP MCE and Fat32 file system in a network. The desktop sees the mapped drive on the laptop as always disconnected and unavailable to connect and with a file system called *NT5CSC. I believe the different file systems are not a problem in a network, so why is the mapped drive on the laptop always disconnected, and where did that file system come from?

First, I apologize for cross-posting, but didn't realize I was in the "Media Center" forum before I hit post. So, here it is... ---------- Windows XP Home SP2 Broadband Internet I'm setting up a Windows XP Home computer. I have several users on already and all is working just fine and dandy. My issue is this...I would like to enable the Guest account, but can't figure out how to get internet working under that account. So, I figured I'd just create a new user with admin access and simply restrict that individual user to suit my needs. However, as there is no group policy editor, I can't figure out how to do that. Any ideas? Thanx.

I'm running xp pro svc pk 2, on a standalone and it appears that I am hosting a domain that I can't admin. I cannot download, update, install, etc. When I try to update I'm told I don't have admin permission to do so. I cannot get this out. My whole system is running on logs and manifests and my bios and root have been changed. Help me please! I've been working on this for a while, Seagate (my harddrive manf) seems to think that somebody with a wireless router took over my sys. Any solutions? Advice? Hello! I got a strange phenomen running wild on 2 PCs. PC#1 is a real PC (XP up2date, with some Norton AV guard running) and the PC#2 is a virtual (vmware) PC (xp up2date as well, with AntiVir protected). PC#1 uses remote desktop to work on PC#2. Hello Community, this might be a known issue, but I couldn't find a cure for it. We have a so called "Desktop Environment" for a Community which does not run Windows. On of the certified Products is Outlook 2003 SP3 including the actual hotfixes. Monitoring the Servers over a longer period I noticed a very high amout of Memory used by Outlook 2003 which can be up to 150 MB (Private Bytes in ProcExpl). So is there a fix for that Syntom or is it a normal behaviour we will have to work with? (I know the article 827310) Thanks for your help and comments Carsten

I have installed the printer on the TS (Win2k), but when he prints over a TS connection, I get the progress bar, but nothing prints out. Install the printer on TS and then delete the installed printer. Note: Not sure where to post this, but I've also. posted under server 2003 with no response. I'm using Mandatory profiles on PC's in one of my labs on Server 2003 network. The profiles load very slow and I can't figure out why. I don't see anything abnormal in the event viewer and was curious of other ways to do some logging. When I log on, the "Loading your personal settings" is very quick < 5 seconds "Applying your personal setting" is the slow part >60 seconds Logging off also takes significant time also. First of all, I understand Microsoft only support preparing system running WinOS using sysprep but, 2008 version of sysprep do not support OS that doesn't use standard c: drive as system drive letter. We created a default system with necessary applications installed but one requirement on this image is not using c: as system drive. When running sysprep with an unattend.xml that specified a drive letter, e.g. n:, sysprep process won't complete. Sysinternal has not release a new version of newsid for windows 2008. Has anyone any suggestion on any other utilties that generate new sid for a system and works with windows 2008? Thanks.

route some specific traffic through VPN and the rest of the trafficthrough dialup connection Hi everyone, I've several clients connected via vpn to my windows 2003 server RAS service, the problem is that i would like to create a rule or something else to force vpn clients use just the vpn by a specific application. Nowadays when they connect the vpn all traffic goes through it and there are traffic i would like to switch to the main dial-up connection. Any ideas how can i do that? Guys, I am looking to test a complete restore of a Windows 2003 (Ent.) server. This is a member server with only the OS installed (no other programs have been installed). Background : I have done a restore on a single 2000 AD controller before where I had a complete backup set. I then reinstalled the entire OS (we were assuming the whole OS got corrupted) on the same physical machine. From there, we would go into F8 - directory restore mode and restore the system state. Would this be any different on a member 2003? Instead of going to F8, we would go into its normal mode? Thanks in advance, Tnt

Hi, I have a server with multiple LAN connections. Everytime i restart the server, the order of the connections will change. e.g. I have a connection LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 I wanted the order to be LAN1 LAN2 LAN3 but when i restart the machine the order of the connections will change to LAN2 LAN1 LAN3 I've tried to do the Interface Metric and set LAN1 to 1 so it will be the priority connection but to no avail. Hi, My server 2003 Enterprise Edition 64 bit. When I connect USB hard disk to the server the hard disk can not be seen in computer even though that the device manager can detect this hard disk. There is nothing wrong with the disk because I can be seen on other laptop. I also update this USB hard disk driver from device manager but it is not able to show in computer windows. Thanks

Since about four days I am getting an Error in the Event Log Application Windows SharePoint Service 2.0, Category None, Event 1000 This error writes itself in the Log every 5 seconds. I have no idea what causes this. Any idea how I can solve this problem? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance

We have a w2k3 domain. We have some servers on our dmz and we can't give them access to the internet to download patches. Does microsoft have a site that has all the patches, and something that will scan the server and then install all needed patches from a cd or dvd? We don't want to have to download the patches one by one and then copy them to a disk. ie an iso of all pathces that we can install would be nice. Thanks in advance

Can someone please help me with correcting this error condition - no one is pressing Ctrl+C. This error is returned as the code after a schedued task runs.The .bat file is scheduled to run, runs attended and the switch is inserted into the .bat command to over-ride the ctrl+c. The xcopy commands within the .bat file appears to execute but the task scheduler returns this error code of 0xc000013a. How is this corrected.

I have a number of networked XP machines. They all boot automatically all the way to the desktop without stopping for passwords or welcome screens. Except one. This one I recently ran Windows Update on and, perhaps foolishly, decided to include the optional software updates. Perhaps this is the root of my peoblem? This machine is set identically to the others in Control Panel/User Accounts/Change how users log on. Both "Use Welcome Screen" and "Enable fast user switching" are checked in all cases.
