Windows XP shell commands?
by Guest John Doe- 1 reply

Thanks to Ken Blake, I have this much for showing the desktop. [shell] Command=2 IconFile=explorer.exe,3 [Taskbar] Command=ToggleDesktop That is made using a text editor and then saved as "filename.scf" I'd like to make a shortcut like that for tiling windows. Are there Taskbar commands in addition to "ToggleDesktop"? I do know that right clicking on the taskbar brings up a menu, but I need portable. Thanks. -- The first big front wheel rollerblades. http://www.flickr.com/photos/27532210@N04/2565924423/

File in Use - filename.xls is locked for editing by ' '.
by Guest Barkley Bees- 1 reply

Here's a bit of an odd one. We have a report from one group of users about an issue they are having with opening files in a particular directory on one of our file servers (Windows Server 2003 SP1 in 2003 Domain). When the user (client is Windows xP SP2, Office 2003) attempts to open an excel file in this directory that is opened by another user, they get the usual "File in Use" prompt (with - Read Only, Notify and Cancel as options). Usually in such a situation it will say "Filename.xls is locked for editing by 'username'." but for some reaon the username variable does not appear here only empty single quotes (by ' '.). I realize this may be somewhat …

We have one-place branch office and we'd like to create security analysis of our services, checking procedures and make new procedures and rules. As first step we'll run Microsoft Best Practices Analyzers (for Exchange, GPO, SharePoint, SystemStateAnalyzer, ...) and follow Microsoft Instrastructure Optimization to identify our currently position in IT software and hardware world. Can you please advice any other SW / procedure to follow formal procedure...? p.s. sorry for crosspoting Thnx.

hi, i have perfmon alerts config'd to monitor disk space, memory, and many other counters. i have created a regular (non admin) user that the alert runs as. all of the perfmon alerts start just fine and run appropriately UNTIL an alert is fired and it has to execute a batch file with "cscript sendemail.vbs ...." in it. i have even altered batch file to simply "echo test > c:\scripts\test.txt" (without quotes) and that won't even work the alert is never fired and of course i never receive alerts. :) user has been granted logon locally rights in sec pol, and i assigned user the logon as batch file rights in sec pol. i have also granted the builtin b…

do the MX priorities have to be in multiples of 10?
by Guest SQL Programmer- 0 replies

Hello: Traditionally, MX priorities are set in multiples of 10, and an attempt is made to deliver the email to the server with the lowest priority first. Do they have to be in priorities of 10, though? If an MX file has a priority of 10, another of 9, and another of 8, will that priority "work"? Thanks! SQL Programmer (it's just a name)

by Guest Mike De Petris- 8 replies

XP x64, it's years that my "Safe Mode" boot does not work, it goes to BSOD. I can't even remember how I lost it, maybe installing graphic drivers. I didn't bother up to know, as I am not able to reinstall a new HaupPauge HVR 4000 tv card (other thread). I wanted to access devices in safe mode to remove them, any other attempt failed, digital tuners are no more available as they was at first installation, I tryed moving the board to different pci slot, uninstall etc. but can't get the digital tuners back, analog tuners work fine, with the initial problem that analog audio is very bad. Which way do you suggest to attempt to "repair" the system? Backup and rein…

In troubleshooting a neighbors computer I found some strange stuff running after logging into one of the User Accounts. I went into ControlPanel/UserAccounts and tried to delete that account. It did in fact save desktop and files for that account on the desktop, but when it gets to actually deleting the account I get an error 80070402. What means this?? Is there some place in the registry where I can manually delete a user account?? thanks

Left Half of Start Menu disappears/goes black
by Guest Woo- 1 reply

Hi - I am using XP SP 2 Home Edition. After using my computer for a little while, the left half of the start menu will go black. When I press the Start button, the top legend with my user name, the bottom legend with log off/turn off computer and the right side with My Documents down through Run in a blue background are all there, but the left side between the top and bottom legends is black - this is the area where commonly used programs are normally listed with a white background. In addition, the "All Programs" button does nothing when clicked, and most other things like My Documents will give "shortcut can't be created here, create on desktop" inst…

No restore points, redux.
by Guest XS11E- 16 replies

Earlier messages posted around July 6th.... Again I had to restore Vista Ultimate 64bit from an Acronis image and again, the restored image had NO restore points. Additional information, MS Update then proceeded to install around 16 updates, both to Office and to Vista and I recognized that some of them I'd installed previously so not only did I lose my restore points but I also either lost the updates or whatever pointer it is that tells MS Update that an update is installed. The image I restored was made just about two hours before the restore because I planned to mess with some software, it didn't work nor did it uninstall so the restore was the …

License & Multiple Installs Over Time
by Guest Jorge Chihuahua- 6 replies

I have three legit licenses for XP. I'm the type of PC user that 1) tends to need to re-install Windows every 6-12 months, 2) adds new hard drives, graphic cards, etc. fairly often, and 3) runs multiple bootable partitions. As a result, not surprisingly, none of my three product keys works any more -- they all tell me that they've been used the max number of times. But I don't think I've "overextended" my license for any: I only have one PC, I'm not pirating Windows, etc. How can I get my product keys "reset" so I can install Windows again? And, by the way, is installing it on multiple bootable partitions on one PC against my XP home licensing? TIA...

That is because when i want to view a picture, it opens up with 'Image preview" fine; but there is no command for me to move on to the next picture. In order for me to see more pictures, i need to "x" out of them and click on another one...one by one. I have tried to look to see if an arrow is somewhere in the viewer so as to let me go to the next pic by simply clicking on the arrow; but i dont see one. thanks in advance

NTFS permissions work for group but not user
by Guest wmeehan79@gmail.com- 4 replies

I've run into an odd problem open files from one of our file servers, when logged into the Citrix box. If I assign a group permission to a folder, then the user can open it fine. However, if I just assign permissions to the user then they are denied access. This is only happening on one file server, the other one seems to work fine. Both file servers have the same GPO applied. All the workstations can access the folders/files without any problems. I'm not even sure where to start looking, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Wayne

Re: How to schedule a reboot in Windows Server 2003 Hi, I have the same need as well. To answer your question of why I would want to schedule a restart....... I need to schedule a restart in order to finalize Windows updates after all users have disconnected from the server and all backups have completed. This will be useful in getting the updates completed without inconveniencing the network users by waiting for a reboot during server access hours. Can this be done and what is the best way to acheive this?
